APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
The Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences at Penn State University is seeking applications for a non-tenure track faculty at the rank of Assistant/Associate Research Professor to co-direct our Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility.
The successful candidate will be a Ph.D. trained scientist with exceptional hands-on experience of all aspects of Cryo-EM.
Responsibilities:
This is a limited-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of renewal.

The Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences at Penn State University is seeking applications for a non-tenure track faculty at the rank of Assistant/Associate Research Professor to co-direct our Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility.
The successful candidate will be a Ph.D. trained scientist with exceptional hands-on experience of all aspects of Cryo-EM.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure the safe running of the Cryo-EM facility. Implement and monitor health and safety processes, develop lab protocols, and risk assessments.
- Lead on the strategic and operational management of the Cryo-EM facility.
- Operate Titan Krios and Talos Arctica transmission electron microscopes for cryo-EM data collection and maintenance of these microscopes by communicating with ThermoFisher Scientific service team.
- Operate and maintenance of equipment for cryo-EM specimen preparation.
- Train Penn State cryo-EM users to operate equipment for cryo-EM specimen preparation and cryo-EM data collection.
- Support and interact with other researchers and faculty members at Penn State to enable macromolecular structure determination by cryo-EM in support of their various projects.
- Analyze cryo-EM data collections including contrast transfer function estimation, particle picking through neural network algorithms, frame alignment, 2D classification, 3D ab-initio reconstructions, 3D classification through heterogeneous refinement, homogeneous refinement, masked local refinement, particle polishing, and 3D variability.
- Train and mentor researchers in cryo-EM data processing using various state-of-the-art software for 3D reconstructions and atomic model building, and in the fundamentals of cryo-EM sample handling and preparation.
- Provide consultancy services to researchers in the field of life science, assisting them in implementing the optimal structural biology solutions.
- Possess the potential to establish collaboration with fellow researchers in the field of life science and actively contribute to the development of grant proposals and funding applications.
- Initiate collaboration with external researchers from both academy and industry who are interested in using cryo-EM to solve high-resolution structures of macromolecules.
- Ph.D. in structural biology or a related field
- Experience in cryo-EM structural biology with a demonstrated track record
- Extensive experience and a strong understanding in cryo-EM field from specimen preparation, data collection to analysis and solving cryo-EM high-resolution structure
- Proficient in the use of a transmission electron microscope (equipped with an autoloader and direct electron detector) and ability to complete independently microscope direct alignments for high quality data acquisition
- Experience in using EPU for data collection for cryo-EM single particle analysis
- Experience in specimen preparation, and collecting and processing cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) data is desirable.
- Experience in specimen preparation, and collecting and processing microcrystal electron diffraction (MicroED) is desirable.
- Expertise with all related softwares (cryoSPARC, Relion, EMAN2, ChimeraX, ISOLDE, Coot, Phenix, ccp-EM, ccp4-suite)
- Experience in molecular modeling, docking and MD simulations using AMBER
- Experience in other biophysical techniques is desirable
- Teaching experience is a plus
- Ability to work as part of a team and excellent communication skills
