Job Description
University of Missouri Kansas City School of Medicine (UMKCSOM) seeks the next Chair for the Department of Surgery, responsible for developing strategies to advance the Department's clinical, research, education, and diversity missions. University Health Truman Medical Center (UHTMC) is an American College of Surgeons-verified Level 1 Trauma Center. University Health (UH) is known as "Kansas City's Essential Hospital," the safety net healthcare system for Jackson County/Kansas City, MO. A 547-bed, not-for-profit health system, UH delivers the highest-quality medical care for our patients with compassion, empathy, and unparalleled dedication to service. During the 2020 pandemic, UH was recognized as a regional leader in COVID-19 testing and care. UMKC sponsors several residency programs, and most of our physicians have teaching responsibilities for residents and medical students. The SOM has responsibility for educating approximately 1400 medical students, residents, and fellows. The Surgery Department also has extensive research laboratories at the UMKC School of Medicine, making advances in treating shock due to severe blood loss and infection and in the neurosciences, resulting in exemplary basic science and clinical research. The NIH and the United States Department of Defense have supported our laboratories. Reporting to the UMKC SOM, and Executive Chief Clinical Officer at UH– the next Chair of Surgery will serve as a visible, committed, and inspiring leader and will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the Department of Surgery with responsibility for the research, education, and clinical missions. The next Chair of Surgery will build on the success of prior leadership while defining the future culture of the Department, leveraging the talents of a diverse group of 92 faculty members, 31 residents, staff, and students stretched across the SOM affiliates including Veterans Affairs, St. Luke’s Hospital, Children’s Mercy Hospital, and UH as the medical school and health system is growing. The candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to promoting an academic and clinical culture that values health equity for communities served by UMKCSOM and UH and a commitment to providing a just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment for all members, trainees, and affiliates of the Department.
The successful candidate will be a visionary surgeon with administrative leadership and faculty management experience, in addition to a demonstrated track record of achievement commensurate with appointment to the faculty at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the UMKC SOM. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated exemplary basic science and/or clinical research and academic achievements, strategic leadership ability, strong interpersonal and communication skills, an entrepreneurial spirit, and active engagement in the field of surgery on a national level.
