Campus Safety Officer, Worker II (Part Time)

Job Summary

Provides personnel, equipment, and real property security for faculty, staff, students and visitors at all SLCC properties and locations. Protecting them from vandalism, theft, destruction, and other adverse affects. Ensures all buildings, offices, and sensitive areas are locked. Ability to handle difficult situations when they arise. Ability to communicate with local authorities to report any suspicious activity on SLCC properties. Works with law enforcement to ensure safety in the various parking areas. This function/position has been designated as “essential”, which means that when the College is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or report to work to protect, recover, and continue operations at the College. This is an un-armed position.

Essential Responsibilities And Duties

  • Maintain campus security that may include patrolling area and responding to alarms.
  • Maintain security of buildings, facilities, equipment, etc., and protect them from vandalism, theft, destruction, and other adverse effects.
  • Observe physical hazards or potential hazards and takes the appropriate steps to report items to the various divisions.
  • Provide being the focal point to Facilities for snow removal or other adverse conditions
  • Take reports which includes reports on crimes, injuries, campus rules, and regulations.
  • Respond to non-police calls such as unlocking doors for instructors and assisting with problems.
  • Provide escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty as necessary.
  • Provide other services such as lockout services and jumpstarts.
  • Maintain data and prepare security reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with all SLCC faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

Skilled in providing protection services to individuals on campus.

Contribute to discussions on public safety related programs, procedures, and policies.

Work outside and be mobile for extended periods of time in all types of weather. Observe, inform, and serve as a witness for law enforcement officers investigating crimes.

Observe physical hazardous or potential hazards, taking appropriate steps to report items to the various divisions. Locate, identify and report any hazardous conditions on campus. Work without supervision.

Operate computer equipment and complex software packages.

Make appropriate decisions in stressful situations.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle, obtain and maintain a current Utah Driver’s License.

Be service oriented.

Pass thorough criminal background check.

Effective interpersonal communications. Basic knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws and codes defined by the United States, Utah, and Salt Lake County. Security tactics and procedures. College policies and procedures. Skilled in radio and cellular phone communications to contact the appropriate agencies.

Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility.

Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.

Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
