Chronicle Books is looking for a creative and savvy Associate Editor to join the Entertainment publishing group. From Grumpy Cat to Dolly Parton, the Entertainment team acquires and publishes pop culture books, formats, and calendars across a wide range of non-fiction categories. Our titles are contagious, thoughtfully designed, funny, and commercial. We need a quick-thinking, pop-culture, and trend-loving editor who has many creative ideas, an interest in growing publishing relationships, and a clear vision of what makes a book irresistible.

The Associate Editor will be responsible for providing editorial and project management support to the Associate Editorial Director on a wide range of commercial books and formats. They will independently acquire or be the project editor for 10-12 books and formats a year. The Associate Editor will also forward the goal of creating a distinctive, innovative, and profitable list by generating ideas, conducting consumer research, and adding value whenever possible. They will build industry relationships and cultivate authors and other makers while focusing on key entertainment publishing categories like humor, music, brand- and trend-driven, pets, and licensing. Reading and evaluating final manuscripts, offering input on galleys, generating title memos, communicating with authors and agents, and evaluating proposals will also be part of this position. The Associate Editor will also present proposals at acquisitions meetings, generate P&Ls, monitor marketplace trends, and guide titles through the publishing process.

Employees at Chronicle Books follow a flexible hybrid schedule of working a minimum of 3 days per week and up to 4 days per week in our San Francisco office, depending on project and business needs. Hiring Salary Range - $63,000/yr - $72,450/yr. This range represents the anticipated low and high end of the expected salary for this position and will be determined by factors including but not limited to: applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, and geographic location as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. This position is also eligible for our profit share plan.

Requirements

Applicants will need a minimum of five years of publishing experience with proven acquisitions and project management abilities, demonstrated skill in copywriting and written communications, experience growing agent contacts in the publishing world, and a demonstrated ability to acquire, develop, position, and edit a list of strong performing titles in humor, pop culture, and general non-fiction. They should be strongly self-motivated with the ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative group.
