SUNY Ulster STEM/ Developmental Math- Assistant Professor

Position Summary

This is a full-time, tenure track faculty appointment teaching developmental mathematics for the SUNY Ulster Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Department.

Examples of Duties

The successful candidate will be expected to do the following:

  • Teach developmental math courses including, but not necessarily limited to, MAT091 Pre-Algebra, MAT098 Basic Algebra, and MAT100 Intermediate Algebra as well as courses in our Quantway math sequence MAT095 Introduction to Quantitative Reasoning and MAT110 Quantitative Reasoning
  • The ability to teach in a variety of learning modalities such as face-to-face, live remote, or HyFlex as necessary given the needs of the college
  • Keep abreast of current research and best-practices in developmental mathematics education and instructional technologies through professional development activities
  • Be a member of and participate in any campus Developmental Education committees as well as participate in campus-wide shared governance and other campus life activities
  • Work closely with and other full-time faculty in mathematics to ensure that students leaving developmental courses are fully prepared for our college-level mathematics courses
  • Work with the Developmental Math Coordinator and STEM Department Chair in outcome assessment and instituting any necessary data-driven curricular changes in developmental mathematics courses
  • Perform duties described in Board policy, the faculty collective bargaining contract, and as assigned at the Stone Ridge, Kingston, and/or other designated locations

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in mathematics, mathematics education, or closely-related field
  • Pre-algebra through algebra teaching experience at the college level

Commitment to community college goals and objectives of providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities; personal qualities to work effectively and with sensitivity in a multicultural environment; awareness of and commitment to the needs of non-traditional and/or re-entry students with diverse abilities and interests.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Academic scholarship in the area of college-level developmental mathematics
  • Familiarity with Carnegie Math Pathways Quantway quantitative reasoning courses
  • Demonstrated ability to teach developmental mathematics at the college level, using varied teaching methods that engage students in their own learning and include learning outcomes that motivate students to develop higher-order critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Experience with online teaching utilizing a common Learning Management System such as Blackboard, D2L, Moodle, or Canvas (SUNY Ulster is transitioning from Blackboard to D2L in 2023)

Personal and Professional Qualities

  • Knowledge of and commitment to community college teaching
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a productive team environment
  • Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

Salary

An initial starting salary of $53,400 - $66,900 will be commensurate with education, training, and experience per academic year with an excellent benefits package has been allocated for this position. This position is contingent upon adequate funding.

Assignment & Anticipated Start Date

The selected candidates will participate in campus-wide events beginning the week of Monday, August 19, 2024. The assigned work year runs through spring graduation in May. The assignment will include an annual base teaching schedule of up to 30 contact hours.
