education as well as the identification and removal of barriers for staff, faculty, and/or participants.

Occupational Summary

This full-time position, under the direct supervision of the Director of Fitness and Wellness, will primarily oversee fitness programs and assist with the development and implementation of comprehensive fitness and wellness initiatives. Responsibilities include fitness programs, personal training, wellness outreach, and special events.

The Assistant Director will foster a safe, equitable, and inclusive community through education and the removal of barriers for program staff and participants. This role will supervise the Program Assistant of Fitness and Wellness, part-time staff, and may require evening and weekend hours

Work Performed

Provide leadership and oversight to the fitness staff, ensuring they meet all program expectations and departmental protocols.

Direct the daily operations of fitness programs and assist with the development and implementation of signature fitness and wellness events.

Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of fitness instructors, program assistant, and staff.

Plan, administer, and evaluate fitness classes, individual and small group training programs.

Assist with monthly and annual financial, progress, and usage reports as requested.

Develops recommendations and implements new classes, programs, and activities.

Assists in assessment and evaluation efforts for the fitness program each semester, identifying participation levels, program participant interests, along with learning and development objectives.

Assist in coordination of in-service training and professional development for fitness staff and personal trainers.

Assist with identifying program fiscal needs, program fee structures, and preparing budget recommendations.

Responsible for managing fitness technology systems, such as audio/visual equipment, Fusion, other fitness software.

Establish and monitor a preventative equipment maintenance and repair program as well as research and recommend new exercise equipment and develop a short and long term replacement schedule.

Collaborate with campus partners and other department staff to develop and implement events and activities for the students to engage in physical activity and help improve their overall well-being.

Collaborate with Marketing, develop and execute campaigns to drive awareness and participation for group fitness, fitness services, and special events.

Assist in the developing and administering safety/risk management and emergency action protocols for areas of responsibility.

Keep abreast of current research in fitness field; obtain and maintain appropriate certifications.

Serves as a substitute for instructors and fitness staff as needed.

Support and help advance the university and department’s commitment to anti-racism and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Minimum Qualifications (Duke)

Education

Work requires analytical, communications and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work requires one year of experience in program administration or OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE involving academic, instructional or counseling activities to acquire skills necessary to plan, coordinate and implement a variety of program activities and events.

Minimum Qualifications:

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, exercise science, recreation, physical education, sport management or related field required from accredited institution.

NCCA accredited certification required

Current CPR/AED certification required.

Experience

Two or more years of professional work experience in fitness or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education/Training

Master’s degree in kinesiology, exercise science, recreation, physical education, sport management, or related field

Experience

Four or more years of professional work experience in fitness or related fields. Three or more years of supervisory and management experience

Skills:

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.

Ability to communicate with diverse populations.

Demonstrated understanding and a strong commitment to customer service orientation.

Ability to maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships.

Ability to think creatively and proactively.

Utilize good judgement; reliability; initiative and resourcefulness.

Knowledge of current exercise guidelines for both healthy individuals and those with medical conditions.

Knowledge of industry standard fitness and personal training protocols.

Proficient in the use and maintenance of cardiovascular and resistance training equipment.

Commitment to ongoing education, staying updated on the latest exercise-related guidelines, and maintaining certification through an NCCA-accredited program.

Shares the responsibility of the mission, strategic planning and goals for Recreation and Physical Education.
