Under the supervision of the Director of Wellness, the Adventure Recreation and Risk Management Coordinator maintains and operates all adventure recreation, waterfront, climbing wall and team building initiatives. The coordinator is responsible for the supervision of staff, fiscal operations, program development, participant retention, and customer service related to the Adventure Recreation part of the Wellness and Recreation department. The coordinator is also responsible for all risk management activities, training sessions and education for the entire wellness department.

Essential Functions

  • Design and implement campus-wide wellness programs through collaboration with the wellness professional staff to provide adventure recreation programs and services for the campus community as needed. Program development includes, but is not limited to, teambuilding, waterfront, outdoor recreation and climbing wall and the effective monitoring and adjustments for improvements and retention.
  • Design and implement the preventive maintenance program for all adventure recreation areas by establishing proper cleaning schedule, monitoring, and performing inventory on a regular basis (annual).
  • Partner with community leaders and organizations as well as campus departments in the development of mutually beneficial wellness programs and activities.
  • Facilitate the professional development of graduate assistants, peer educators, and interns by training and supervising them in their roles in student recreation programs.
  • Hires train, and supervise all student workers who fall under marketing and adventure recreation.
  • Expand the scope of wellness and health education offerings to students by developing and presenting educational programs and workshops on a variety of health, Adventure Recreation and wellness topics. Serve as a subject matter expert guest speaker for campus courses in the areas of Facility Management, Wellness Management, Psychology, and Student Success.
  • Record, monitor and evaluate overall and individual participation data of the Adventure Recreation program to maximize student retention and success.
  • Assist students in making positive health choices by developing lifestyle enhancement programs, such as, smoking cessation, stress management, weight management, exercise, and teambuilding initiatives.
  • Maximize the use of available resources by collaborating with other College departments in program design and implementation and seeking grant opportunities and additional sources of external funding for health education, adventure recreation and intervention programs.
  • Oversee the coordination and day to day operation of waterfront, climbing wall and adventure recreation programs offered at the Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center.
  • Develop and manage the approved income and expense budgets of all adventure recreation programs.
  • Assume responsibility for weekend coverage of the facility on a determined rotation (i.e. every fifth week) and one evening a week.
  • Oversee risk management program for all Wellness & Recreation programs and areas.
  • Assist Director of Wellness in monitoring policies and procedures to provide for safe operation of facilities and programs.
  • Plan and conduct safety training and education for employees to include annual update of professional staff in pool chemical procedures, collaboration with Facilities Maintenance to ensure OSHA and EPA protocols are in place, and proper inspection of equipment.
  • Ensure all risk management and liability expectations are met in regard to outside groups and minors.
  • Maintain updated, accurate records of all staff certifications, in-service trainings, etc.
  • Serve as lead professional for Wellness & Recreation EAP and risk management protocols including staff training and development.
  • Contribute to the success of the Wellness Center by performing all other duties as needed to drive the vision, fulfill the mission, and abide by the values of the College.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with all campus events including orientation, day on campus, scholar’s weekends, family weekend, adult and evening program, NIRSA Day, Annual Rec Fest, etc.
  • Assist in the facilitation of CPR/First Aid/AED certification classes for HWC students
  • Complete wellness and recreation monthly reports, annual end of year report and quarterly Board of Trustee reports.
  • Conduct tours of the facility when needed.
  • Respond to the needs, complaints, and suggestions of students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
  • Provide administrative leadership of the Health and Wellness Curriculum, a staff development plan.
  • Attend all necessary meetings such as weekly professional staff meetings, weekly staff meetings with Director of Wellness, all scheduled FSC All-Staff meetings, and Convocations

Education, Work Experience And Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Physical Education, Recreation, or a closely related field. (Master’s degree preferred)
  • At least 2-5 years of experience in adventure recreation, human relations, and fiscal management. (Undergraduate counts)
  • Able to obtain CPR Instructor Certification within first 6 months of employment.
  • Must be able to demonstrate experience in working with students as well as the general public.
  • Must be able to demonstrate skills in adventure programs; demonstrate coordination of special events; demonstrate supervisory skills; demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and oral; demonstrate ability to create, develop, and evaluate new programs; demonstrate ability to market programs and manage budgets; and demonstrate working knowledge of ongoing health and wellness programs.
