Fostering democracy? Not exactly the mission I had in mind getting into higher ed tech. But when I joined The Chronicle of Higher Education's webinar on First-Year Student Success last week, I was amazed to see so many attendees asking about strategies for getting out the vote this fall with first-year students. Since November is less than 5 months away, here are 5 ideas that anyone can use to get out the vote with Mongoose's Cadence (or whichever messaging tool you have): 1. 🎂 DOB < 11/6/06 (Now) - Remind them they can vote this year with a link to details, whether or not they're enrolled with you yet! 2. Absentee Info Poll❓(Sep) - Find students to follow up with information on requesting absentee ballots from home with a quick "Yes/No" Smart Message 3. ^Send the Nos an ⚡️auto-reply with more details on getting registered to vote/voting locally! 4. 🏅Challenge Stats (Nov) - Send out a blast text the morning of Election Day to let everyone where to go to get their "I voted" pin to help set a new campus record. 5. It's Not Too Late! (Nov) - ⏰ Schedule a text to go out on election day in the late afternoon reminding them that polls are still open! 6. BONUS - Stuck on the message? 🪄Ask your AI Assistant to add some ✨ splash to make it stick out to your students. A very timely opinion piece about the use of artificial intelligence in education, by Jane Rosenzweig, director of the Harvard College Writing Center — https://lnkd.in/earixAiW “One middle school principal told me that ‘keeping up with the technology is overwhelming — just when we get a handle on it, the landscape changes.’ Meanwhile, a November survey of K-12 educators found 79 percent of those surveyed said their school districts had no clear policies about the use of AI in the classroom. As recently as February, a survey of school superintendents found that only 37 percent had plans for training teachers in AI usage. Part of the problem is that the conversation about AI in education has been dominated by the companies churning out AI tools rather than by the teachers in the classrooms. EdTech School Saturday (ep 1): Understanding the Structure of School Districts vs. Education Companies School districts and education companies, although both involved in the sphere of education, operate very differently. Here's a brief comparison to help you understand: 1️⃣ Governance: School districts are public entities governed by elected officials known as school board members. They're accountable to the public and follow regulations set by the state and federal government. On the other hand, education companies are usually private entities, owned by individuals or shareholders. They are governed by a board of directors and follow business laws and regulations. 2️⃣ Funding: School districts are primarily funded by local, state, and federal tax dollars. They might also receive grants and donations. Education companies, however, generate revenue through the sale of products or services. They might also raise funds from investors. 3️⃣ Goal: While both aim to improve education, school districts focus on providing equitable education to all students within their jurisdiction. Education companies, while they strive to contribute positively to the field of education, also aim to generate profit. Understanding these differences can greatly enhance our approach to collaborating and innovating within the education sector. The Panel Discussion on the topic "The Intersection of AI and Education: Going Beyond the Hype" at 1EdTech Consortium's Learning Impact Conference 2024 was a great discussion with lots of questions from the audience. For me the biggest takeaway was about a potential equity crisis in the next several years. Ryan Lufkin of Instructure described a split in the education community on AI with those incorporating AI into education on one side and those seeking to ban or exclude it on the other side. However, it won't be long before colleges/universities and potential employers expect every candidate to have experience using AI in some capacity - opening up a severe gap for those students who came from educational systems that chose to exclude it from the curriculum. #LearningImpact24

During the early days of the post-COVID world, many higher education faculty wondered, “What now?” In their 2022 EDUCAUSE article, Amy Kuntz, Sara Davis, and Erica Fleming from Penn State University highlighted several ways that the pandemic changed traditional faculty development. Higher education is a "changing landscape". As we continue to navigate these new waters, what is your university doing now for faculty development? At its core, classical education is about asking questions. David Hicks in, Norms and Nobility, states: “Classical education is not, preeminently, of a specific time or place. It stands instead for a spirit of inquiry and a form of instruction concerned with the development of style through language and of conscience through myth. The key word here is inquiry. Everything springs from the special nature of the inquiry” (18).
