Researchers from #NYUTandon are leading a study alongside the to develop a prototype digital tool that detects issues in large power transformers, with the goal of helping the power industry save money and avoid outages & failures. The detector prototype will be tested in the New York Power Authority's Advanced Grid Innovations Laboratory for Energy (AGILe), a simulation facility that helps develop new technologies and demonstrate new solutions for energy systems. The prototype will be built by NYU Tandon and tested in NYPA’s AGILe lab "Large power transformers are the backbone of electricity systems, designed to operate for decades,” said Francisco de Leon, NYU Tandon professor of electrical and computer engineering and member of NYU Tandon Power Lab. “But unchecked accumulated mechanical deformations triggered by short circuits elsewhere in the system cause expensive repairs, lengthy downtime, and even fire hazards. This collaboration with NYPA continues NYU Tandon Power Lab's tradition of working in real world applications, in this case by creating technological safeguards to help identify when transformers need critical maintenance." The Biden administration will announce new tariffs on electric vehicle and solar cell imports from China, two major components of the administration’s efforts to reduce U.S. emissions, officials confirmed to reporters. Officials on the call said tariffs will increase from 25 percent to 100 percent on Chinese EV imports to offset Chinese export practices, which they argued “favor Chinese automakers at the expense of US and other foreign automakers and autoworkers and are leading to a massive surge of unfairly underpriced Chinese vehicles into foreign markets.” The administration will also double tariffs on Chinese solar cell imports to 50 percent, officials said on the call. This increase, they said, is meant to counteract Chinese dominance of global solar production, which currently comprises about 70 percent. https://lnkd.in/dEFB-udR

This is a huge topic. China cornering the 21st-century equivalent of oil and gas, specifically solar, wind, EV cars, rare earth mining and refining to a degree that is more extreme than the Arab domination of oil production in the previous century, which allowed the Arab embargo of 1974 and the economic downturn of the late 1970s. In the case of a conflict with the US, this Chinese industrial hegemony may lead to a massive economic disruption, and ultimately the loss of grade power competition.

Global Demand for Electric Vehicles A Bull Market Without Breadth Electric vehicles (EVs) play an important role in the global energy transition, as they enable the transportation sector to capitalize on rapid decarbonization in power generation. While the growth in EV sales is impressive at the global level, this is a bull market without breadth. Just like the S&P 500's growth has been largely driven by a small number of tech companies, a handful of key markets drive growing EV numbers across the world. In my latest Substack, I review the global EV sales figures, discuss the challenges that this narrow market presents for global decarbonization, and evaluate a few policy options to expand EV sales in other markets.

This is a great view on how the improvements to NYS resi tax credit can benefit more folks that can really use the bill savings. The refundability provision helps level the playing field for LMI earners and makes sure we can have solar for all New Yorkers! FUND this measure in the budget! it will provide a 10x ROI on cost vs benefits relazied.

NYC high rise heat pump project, backed by $5m from NYSERDA and $30m private. 70% GHG reduction. 1 down, ~6000 more high rises to go. Looks like this 1930s high rise is retrofitting water and air source heat pumps and a new combined heating + cooling network. The very cool bit is the integration with the new-build neighbour on the same block, who had built a ground-source heat pump system, so both buildings can share a heat network and potentially expand to other buildings in the future. https://lnkd.in/enA-5fum
