Californian drivers appear to be losing some enthusiasm for Tesla. A California Auto Outlook report shows year-over-year Tesla registrations are down again in the state. The report, published on Monday by the California New Car Dealers Association, summarizes first-quarter vehicle registration figures statewide. The report said Tesla saw a 7.8% dip in sales in California in the first quarter, down from 54,265 in the last quarter of 2023 to 50,025 in Q1. The drop follows last quarter's 9.8% decline. Rivian Automotive has secured an incentive package of $827 million from the State of Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to expand its electric vehicle (EV) plant in Normal, Illinois, #USA. The funding will enable Rivian to increase the capacity of the plant and produce R2, a midsized SUV. It will also be used for public infrastructure enhancements and job training programs for the company’s workforce. R2 is expected to offer a combination of performance, capability, and utility in a five-seat package. The EV plant in Normal began production in 2021 and has already manufactured over 100,000 EVs, including R1S, R1T, and commercial electric delivery vehicles. Rivian Automotive has invested over $2 billion in Normal and claims to have generated a value add of more than $3.9 billion to the local economy in three years. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker emphasized the positive impact of the investment on the electric vehicle ecosystem, the economy, and the state's ambitious climate goals. Listen to the Legendary Lutz In a recent interview legendary General Motors executive Bob Lutz said that auto execs wanted a gradual evolution … using hybrids as a step to pure EVs And offered detailed thoughts…. But before looking at that 👀 at the picture… he said electrification was inevitable 16 years ago!!?? An imperfect solution Lutz said hybrid vehicles are a “wonderful … in-between step” in the EV evolution. They have proven successful at transporting Americans for a range of 20 to 50 miles, using the electric part of the engine — which satisfies “most trips for most people,” Lutz pointed out. “And after that, you’ve got a gasoline engine and an internal combustion powertrain that’s going to take you on the rest of your trip and you never run out of electricity,” he added. “You can fill the [gas] tank in five minutes [and enjoy] all the wonderful advantages of internal combustion.” But there is one major drawback when it comes to hybrids: the cost of production (which almost always transfers over to consumers). “You’ve got an internal combustion drivetrain, a gasoline engine with all that entails, all the emission controls that are very expensive — and at the same time, you’ve got a lithium ion battery pack with all the control systems,” said Lutz. “It takes an incredible engineering effort to get the electric powertrain and the gasoline powertrain to work seamlessly together so [drivers] can’t tell whether one is operating or the other.” At the end of 2023, hybrid vehicles made up nearly 10% of new car sales, a proportion that’s more than doubled since 2020, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration Thoughts? Brian Mittendorf see info that 10% U.S. sales last year were hybrids…. Full article https://lnkd.in/gD77ZAe7

While everyone is talking about Tesla’s Supercharge network, I’m watching General Motors. Last week GM’s CEO Mary Barra spoke at the Detroit Economic Club. She described EV adoption as a “once-in-a-generation type of transformation.” In this interview she discussed; - EV adoption challenges - Charging station partnerships - Charging infrastructure concerns - Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill funding GM views the lack of sufficient charging infrastructure in the US as a major challenge to mass EV adoption. Here's what they're doing about it; - Investing $750M in charging infrastructure through various partnerships - Building 2,000 charging stalls nationwide with EVgo and Pilot Flying J - Installing (with EVgo) an additional 3,250 stalls by 2025 (1,000+ already installed) - Installing 40,000 chargers at local dealers through the Dealer Community Charging Program While Tesla is dominant in the modern EV market, GM has been in the game for 20+ years -- they built the first mass-produced EV (the EV1) back in 1996. Expect to see GM continue to play an increasingly large role in charging infrastructure.

#BREAKING: A big change afoot in the #Toyota lineup. The automaker is investing $1.4 billion into its assembly plant in southern Indiana to make an EV. But during questioning, the company says the plant's capacity isn't increasing, and the BEV in question will be chassis-based, not skateboard based. Which means that either the Toyota Sienna -- but more likely the Toyota #Highlander -- is going to be re-engineered into an EV in 2026 under the existing platform. You read it here first, folks. https://lnkd.in/euKu7-Rk

CAWA in Coalition Opposes SB 903 - A New Regulatory Program Update: The Senate Appropriations Committee today held SB 903, meaning the measure will not be advancing this session. A major win for CAWA and the coalition. This Legislation Stifles Innovation, Negatively Impacts Virtually Every Sector of the Economy Aerospace, Semiconductors, Clean Energy, Electronics, Medical, Industrial Processes, Agriculture ...Millions in New State Costs to Implement. A coalition of California’s leading job creators, innovators, manufacturers, grocers, clean energy producers, agriculture and others is opposed to SB 903 (Skinner), legislation that would create an expensive and complex new regulatory program at the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to regulate all commercial and consumer products that may contain, as well as any industrial manufacturing processes that may use, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) substances. 🚗 Big news from the auto industry and a huge step forward for electric vehicles (EVs)! VP Kamala Harris has just announced a thrilling $3 billion investment from the DOE to bolster EV component production. Here’s why this matters: American Axle & Manufacturing, a Michigan-based supplier, is set to utilize these funds to build a new facility in Detroit, bringing 1,300 new job opportunities to the community. The initiative is a key part of the Biden administration's Inflation Reduction Act, which allocates a whopping $7 billion towards expanding EV and battery production capabilities. 🔋 As someone who has closely followed the transformation of the automotive industry, this milestone resonates deeply. I remember a colleague consulting with an auto parts manufacturer years ago, where transitioning to EV was more a distant plan than an impending reality. Seeing such substantial government backing now solidifies the shift towards sustainable transport as a national priority. This development is poised to reduce reliance on foreign parts, reinforcing the US EV supply chain. It's an exciting time, but some critics fear it may spike inflation or increase taxpayer burdens. 🤔 What are your thoughts on this boost for EVs? Will the benefits outweigh potential economic downsides? Share your insights or stories about how shifts in industry standards have impacted your sector! #ElectricVehicles #SustainableEnergy #ManufacturingJobs #InflationReductionAct #EconomicDevelopment #JobCreation #USAutoIndustry https://lnkd.in/gwdbnUnV

I think it is great that Honda has been able to get a fuel cell/Plug in vehicle into production, and welcome the continued exploration of this technology. This allows majority commuting miles to be wall charge electric only, while relying on Hydrogen's faster than battery fill capabilities for longer range driving. Hydrogen fuel availability is still a major challenge here and I was a little surprised that adding the fuel cell system while removing the ICE engine still resulted in a roughly 500lb increase compared to a comparable hybrid. The fuel itself is pretty light, but the systems around it still need some improvements to help weight/range. But overall great to see progress on this technology. #BEV #hydrogen https://lnkd.in/garawu3E

This week we are joined by CAR’s Principal Economist Yen Chen, who discusses the UAW Tuscaloosa plant vote, new tariffs on Chinese imports, and how auto parts from China’s forced labor are in imported cars from BMW, JLD, and VW. "The new tariffs on Chinese BEVs and batteries will provide U.S. automakers and EV battery suppliers more time to catch up with their Chinese competitors. On the other hand, these tariffs are also likely to limit the source of batteries and battery parts for U.S. automakers, potentially leading to higher prices of BEVs available for U.S. customers. This tariff approach might not be the optimal solution to counteract the Chinese competition, but considering the U.S. manufacturing jobs and employment, it is currently the only available strategy for the United States."
