New NBA Deals Could Send Dozens Of Games To Streaming Services—And Leave Out TNT, Report Says    The NBA is close to signing new rights deals with Disney, Amazon and NBC that would bring in nearly $76 billion over the next 11 years, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday, a move that could shake up basketball fans’ viewing habits by moving scores of games to streaming services—and end TNT’s NBA broadcasts after decades.    https://lnkd.in/dcfMSMU9   Given the significant audience migration from linear TV to streaming, a move like this isn't surprising. Over the past few years, we've seen an increase of more than 210% in households getting TV content from internet connections, with streaming now accounting for over 32% of TV usage among adults 18 and older​ (Nielsen)​​ (VideoWeek)​. This trend is projected to continue, indicating a significant opportunity for streaming platforms.    Naturally, advertising dollars will follow the audience. In 2024, CTV ad spend is expected to reach $30.10 billion, up 22.4% from 2023, and by 2027, streaming will account for 68% of all television ad spend​ (MNTN)​​ (Nielsen)​. Live Nation break up with Ticketmaster could be the first step towards more innovation in the ticketing industry 🔖 The U.S. Department of Justice filed a competition lawsuit against entertainment giant Live Nation, alleging that the company holds a "monopoly" over the U.S. entertainment market. The lawsuit reportedly focuses on Ticketmaster's practice of using exclusive ticketing contracts with venues, which critics argue stifles competition, limits customer choice, and drives up prices. This comes along with the new legislation in the US, UK, and Australia requiring event ticket sellers to display the total ticket price upfront, including all fees. This may compel ticketing companies to lower some of their fees to remain competitive, eventually resulting in revenue losses. In response, these companies will need to explore new ways to differentiate themselves and secure new deals. One strategy is to offer promoters and clients resale platforms, allowing them to control both primary and secondary markets and capture extra revenue that currently goes to unauthorized resellers. However, in light of the recent case, implementing this approach may prove challenging. Controlling both markets can lead to unethical practices, such as placing a percentage of tickets directly on the secondary market to capitalize on higher earnings. This may raise red flags to regulators who might try to stop such behavior. This could open the door for 3rd party white-label resale platforms who could cover the functionality for the ticketing companies while seamlessly integrating. However, to really fully stop illegal reselling, providers would need to use technology that substitutes classic tokens which can be easily exchanged. Biometrics could give a helping hand. The vision would be to link 1 face with exactly 1 ticket, disabling bots and companies like Viagogo from buying thousands of tickets. Having this would bring the added value and necessary differentiation for the ticketing firms. What about the collaborative outcome? ✅Fans would benefit from fair market prices ✅More genuine transactions would occur on the primary ticket market ✅Fans would have the flexibility to free their tickets ✅Every transaction would be under the control of the ticketing company, reducing fraud ✅Ticketing firms would bring promoters more revenues, making the company a valuable partner So the main idea is for ticketing firms to implement technologies that will make them stand out and deliver unprecedented value to its customers that leads to higher profits. The right data can be a game-changer. But, I've realized data is extremely fragmented in the sports tech space. Companies like Crunchbase and Pitchbook provide insights into most startups, but from what I've found a lot of the information is inaccurate or outdated. So I've been working to build a database of sports tech companies with more in-depth and accurate data points including: • Verified contact info • All social accounts • Funding rounds • Amount raised • Investor names Plus more... This list will focus on quality and will be updated consistently with new information and companies over time. PSA for CEOs: It’s your job to understand what potential acquirers want. Even if you’re not looking to sell yet. This idea was top of mind for me during GDC, where I met with several bigger studios. I took every opportunity to ask how they think about acquisitions: - What makes a potential acquisition interesting to them? - What thresholds do studios have to meet? - What metrics do they value most? This type of forward-looking market exploration is a shift for me. My primary focus for the last four years has been building FunCraft into a successful business. But my role needs to evolve. While FunCraft is growing and thriving independently, it’s still my responsibility to gauge what could make us an attractive acquisition down the road and understand how we build toward it. My advice to other CEOs: If an acquisition is something you can envision for your company down the road, don't plan for it in a silo. Talk extensively with potential acquirers and let their input inform your strategy early on.

I am excited to announce officially today LOOR Distro! LOOR Distro is best summed up with two strategic goals. 1. License and distribute our artists content to create more revenue for them. 2. Share funding and viewing data with other streaming platforms so they can make safer content acquisition investments. LOOR Distro is our way of taking monetization to our artists and our platform to the next level. By using our technology and the insane amount of individual data, both in watch time and most unique to us, funding data for our pilots and TV shows, and providing it to distribution companies looking for new streaming content. We are now beginning the process of taking this information, and connecting with the distributors we've established relationships with over the years and licensing user funded projects to other streaming networks in partnership with our artists. Basically LOOR is a way for the streaming industry to analyze data from an individual pilot without having to make an entire series order on a guess. It can prove to a streaming platform that there is in fact a market for content outside of the typical niche family-friendly genre. This increases the reach of LOOR content, and creates another significant revenue stream for us and the film makers as well. But most importantly it shows other family-friendly streaming companies content and data that can reach new audiences. And we have the data, not just the gut instinct. The one thing that LOOR has, that other streaming companies do not is individual funding data. The difference between viewing data and funding data has been tremendously eye opening for us and even surprising. For example did you know young adults with children are less likely to spend their money to fund new content for their preschoolers? In most all instances subscribers fund content for themselves and their age group over that of children's content. Yet, because preschool content is usually watched on repeat as background noise throughout the day the viewing metrics have skewed the importance of this content to the paying subscriber. Causing streaming companies to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on basically background noise that's on repeat. Kids content as background noise doesn't create loyalty and increases churn. Our viewing metrics and funding metrics are able to read these conclusions. LOOR Distro is something we've been working on since we started forming relationships and building the technology. Data has always been integral to every bit of code we wrote. But it's also the result of going to film festivals and meeting with others in the creative space. Talking to distributors and learning about their inability to to test content on newer demographics without significant risk. The Disney/WBD/FOX sports JV now has a name: Venu Sports. The company says it will launch this "fall," with the rumors being a target month of September. No pricing was announced. I expect the service to launch with minimal customization and personalization in the user experience and advertising. A lot of the work on the backend is being driven by FOX right now, but there simply isn't enough time from concept to launch for the service to have lots of features and functionality. So expect a bare minimum when it launches, with more functionality added over time. Venu Sports CEO says the product is being "built from the ground up," but I'm unsure what that means. Most of the backend tech is utilizing workflows for other video services already in place from FOX and the other JV partners. I don't think there is any problem with this approach, but the quote makes it sound like some completely new tech stack is being invented and designed just for this new service. #streamingmedia #venue #sportsnews #SVOD #disney #wbd #fox

The Neighborhood Studios team spent the last few days thinking about our new idea pipeline and its output. Tons of thoughts on this after being in a venture studio for 2 years. Here are some summary stats... - 1,750 new (raw) ideas considered per year. - 110 of those are given a second glance. - 66 of those are seriously considered. - 10 of those become experiments...real products in the hands of customers. - 2 of those are spun-out into studio companies. What the studio team has been discussing over the past few days is that 66 number. That's the number of ideas that 3 people on the team can dig into every year. Venture studios can be perceived as a "startup factory"...an engine to launch startups. The reality is that venture studios are a machine to invalidate ideas. We invalidate many more ideas than we validate. We touch 1,750 ideas per year, seriously dive into 66 of them, build experiments for 10 of them and only launch 2 of them. All that work turns into 2 studio companies per year that have a way higher success rate than the average startup in the wild. Said another way...startups are hard. Hoop streams! The NBA is closing in on deals with NBC, Amazon and ESPN that point to the staggering value of sports rights and the anxieties of media's biggest players. As Ed McMahon used to say, "Heeere's Johnny!" For today's media companies, that Johnny is sports. The NBA sweepstakes has thrown traditional media into turmoil, exposing their fears about cable's decline and their shaky footing in the streaming landscape. More telling is that it underscores a central dilemma: sports content is incredibly expensive, yet essential for attracting viewers in a world dominated by streaming services. The numbers are a constant barrage of non-stop 3-pointers. NBC's part of the deal with the league averages $2.5 billion a year to show roughly 100 games per season. Amazon’s $1.8 billion-a-year package is like its Prime Deals and includes a grab bag of different games from regular-season and playoff games, to a piece of the conference finals. Disney would retain an NBA package and would continue to air the NBA Finals, with payments averaging about $2.6 billion a year. Separately, ESPN’s deal allow the company to air games on its direct-to-consumer streaming service, which is set to launch in 2025. The streaming industry has too many ugly ducklings. While the size of the deals may make headlines, they also bring with them questions and concerns especially at NBCUniversal. Why? The streaming business is still highly volatile and as of now, a perennial money loser for anyone not named Netflix. In the case of NBC, its streaming unit Peacock has been more like a floundering duck with a struggling subscriber base and erratic content development. Whether the NBA deal helps drive subscriptions remains debatable, but with a shiny new sports package, NBC may even raise prices for Peacock. Amazon along with Big Tech are the ultimate puppet masters. For Amazon, the NBA package is yet another building block as it brings more live events into Prime. That has a potential big payday for the ecommerce giant as it continues to add and solidify its subscription base. More importantly, Amazon package likely lessened the financial load for NBC and Disney/ESPN. We saw this with Major League Baseball, and even more so with the NFL, but the price of these licensing deals are increasing astronomically thanks to Big Tech. It also has plenty to do with the continuing transition to streaming and the challenge to turn a profit. Multiplayer DAWs are a hot, emerging niche in the music software market. Here's why they're so important.👇 A handful of companies are already using the "multiplayer" label to promote their products. The best examples I've seen are Endlesss, Soundation, and BeatConnect. (I've shared reviews and video demos of them in the attached article) Multiplayer DAWs are positioned within a broader umbrella of "remote music collaboration apps", including major players like BandLab Technologies and smaller emerging tech companies like Arne Wilhelmsen's SyncDNA. So what makes an audio workstation "multiplayer"? The bar is set pretty low. At a minimum it needs to have: 1️⃣ Multitrack recording 2️⃣ Realtime multi-user access to the same session But to really qualify as "multiplayer" I think it needs to also have a gaming component. Endlesss and BeatConnect have both pulled this off successfully: 🥊 Beat battles & song competitions happen via the app ✍ Hosts define the rules for judging the competition But wait.. Not all games are competitive. Some are collaborative. In the attached article, I show an example where YouTuber Ed Talenti uses Soundation to host a collaborative DAW game: 📹 The game was live streamed on YouTube (ala Twitch games) 🤝 The moderator selected users to enter the session and collab ⏳ Each guests had a limited amount of time to contribute Everyone contributed to a single piece, with time limits. Fun! I predict multiplayer music making will grow in popularity over the next few years because... ⏲ Suno can create songs in any subgenre, almost instantly. 💡 AI music gen won't be legislated away overnight. 🎸 Collaboration and play is at the heart of most great music. 🤷‍♂️ Sharing on socials =/= collaboration The create > share pipeline will get boring when the novelty wears off and effort has been taken out of the equation. As that happens, the creative gaming element of music will be essential for user retention. People didn't stop playing chess in 1997 when Deep Blue beat Kasparov. I'm confident that people will keep enjoying the game of music collaboration in the era of genAI. The industry may have to adapt but we'll survive. 🕹 I want to also point out that companies like Infinite Album and Reactional Music are making big strides in adaptive video game music, powered by AI. And there's close to a dozen music making apps in VR, including virtual DAWs. All this tech is approaching a creative singularity centered around gaming. I think we'll arrive sooner than most of us realize. DAWs may be eclipsed by simpler, more intuitive multiplayer experiences. This field is ripe for innovation and imagination. For most folks, sports betting is all about taking their fandom to the next level. And the concept of "bet small to win large" perfectly captures this idea. Imagine this - you threw $5 on a Thursday Night Football Game. But that little bet to add some excitement to your night could potentially land you $12,000. It's a classic example, but a powerful motivator for many bettors out there. Jeff Bezos once said: "In the long run, there's zero misalignment between customer experience and company value." This couldn't be more true when it comes to the world of sports betting. It's all about giving users the best possible experience. Slightly better odds might attract more bettors initially… But it's not the primary factor driving long-term engagement. At the end of the day, it's the thrill of potentially hitting it big that keeps people coming back for more. For many, it's about the rush of putting a little on the line for the chance at something huge. That's the magic of sports betting - it takes the excitement of the game to a whole new level. Our goal with Parrot Perspective is to try and find solutions to the problems we face, not just point them out again and again. Here's one quick data point that illustrates some of the many details you get in Parrot Perspective: "Netflix sits last among the major SVOD services in hit rate, which measures sentiment for films, with 64% of titles falling into the “Average” category, according to Parrot data. This leads to a number of forgettable films that don’t generate much viewership or demand, as evidenced by Netflix’s own Engagement Report. (The top 1,000 TV/Movie titles out of 18,000, or roughly 5%, accounted for nearly 60% of all viewing in the six month period). This can also lead to the company’s popular films quickly falling out of relevancy in the greater pop culture conversation. Netflix ranked last behind Universal Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, 20th Century Studios, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. Entertainment and The Walt Disney Company in terms of the percentage of films that maintained significant public interest for more than five months, per The Wall Street Journal. As of Q1 2024, Netflix original movies accounted for 25% of the platform’s total movie catalog in the US market, a significant increase from the 20% it saw in Q3 2022. Despite this, just one Netflix original movie ranked among the 50 most in-demand films worldwide from January 1, 2020-April 3, 2024." The volume of app downloads for streaming services is not a valid metric for defining "growth." According to Sensor Tower, "Netflix saw a decline of 6% in downloads" in April, yet in Q1, we know that Netflix subscriber growth jumped 16% YoY, and Netflix beat quarterly earnings and revenue estimates. Netflix noted that it expects paid net additions to be lower in the second quarter compared to the first quarter "due to typical seasonality." So, even if app download metrics were valuable, Netflix already said they expect Q2 to be lower regarding new subscribers. The rate of app downloads does not factor into Netflix's financial metrics, and Sensor Tower can't tell the difference between a download for a current subscriber and a new subscriber. I just upgraded to an iPhone 15, and Sensor Tower doesn't know if I'm a current or new subscriber when Netflix's app downloads to my new phone. They also can't see that I downgraded from the Premium plan to the standard with ads plan, resulting in a $16 revenue loss for Netflix each month. App downloads are a worthless metric for tracking usage, ARPU, engagement, subscriber lifetime value, or any other real metric tracked and utilized by streaming companies with Wall Street. #streamingmedia #netflix #SVOD #AVOD
