Congrats to firm client Andreessen Horowitz on their recent investment in Talkiatry's $130 million Series C! Two significant barriers to delivering high-quality mental healthcare are (1) limited access to psychiatrists and (2) the lack of technology that can improve both the quality and efficiency of care. Talkiatry addresses both of these barriers for the acute end of the behavioral health market—psychiatric care—by offering virtual treatment covered by patients’ insurance. By employing providers directly and embedding into their workflows, Talkiatry standardizes the quality of physician care and influences patient outcomes over time. In a study of over 1,800 patients, 65% of patients with anxiety or depression no longer have clinically significant symptoms after visiting Talkiatry for an average of five sessions.

This article by the WSJ is critically important for public health officials and HealthTech entrepreneurs to internalize. We need multiple solutions for patients to move towards post GLP-1 usage. These solutions need to be easy to implement, non-disruptive to daily life and focused on caloric restriction , lifestyle change and muscle gain. Too many startups are still focused on GLP-1 prescription and delivery. Not enough people focused on the next stage of the weight management journey. As the Journal states, the benefits of the GLP-1 craze are only going to be successful long term if the transition off of them is successful. I suppose I did. Some examples: - Using personal computers rather than buying new ones - Working from home for years rather than renting office space - Avoiding hiring employees if we could do it ourselves - Paying nobody except independent contractors, and that only when we knew we needed outside expertise - Avoiding any expenses that didn't promise to advance the venture - Taking no pay until we become profitable The result: We were able to stay alive and advancing while brutally underfunded. And we managed to get our revolutionary dental implant cleared through FDA while spending only about $140,000. I'm rather proud of that. We're still lean and mean. We had an incredible time at the Northwest Pharmacy Convention 2024! Some key learnings and discussions from the conference as the MedMe Health (YC W21) team spent a few enlightening days in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho:: 🩺 Standard of Care Model for Autonomous Prescribing Jennifer Adams highlighted the continuum of pharmacist prescribing authority, from most restrictive to least restrictive across all the states, starting from: 1) Collaborative Prescribing: Patient-Specific CPAs 2) Collaborative Prescribing: Population-Specific CPAs 3) Autonomous Prescribing: Government Protocols 4) Autonomous Prescribing: Standard of Care States like Idaho on the Standard of Care model are leading the charge with the more standard and sustainable way for pharmacists to prescribe, rather than more restrictive and highly-specific models that make it difficult for even patients to know what pharmacists can and cannot do. 🌐 Diverse Approaches to Clinical Services We observed a wide range of progress among pharmacies in their clinical services journey - from those just beginning to implement clinical services to those with fully established systems, multiple consultation rooms, and dedicated clinical staff such as Alexandra (Sasha) Heyneman, PharmD, MS, ANP and Scott Herzog doing services like compounding, prescribing, PrEP, Travel, Hormone Therapy, etc. 💊 Emergence of Cash Pay Pharmacies Innovative models like cash pay pharmacies, where patients pay a fixed monthly fee for unlimited healthcare access, are gaining traction. There was an interesting case we heard where a pharmacy was able to retain 50% of their patients after transitioning Caremark patients to this model. This approach is particularly valuable for patients caught between Medicare and Medicaid or those with high deductibles and copays, making out-of-pocket payments more affordable. Big congrats to our outstanding rising clinical research stars and global health practitioners at IGHS, UCSF! After months of dedicated hard work, we've all completed our qualifying oral exams. I believe these projects hold the potential to lead to the development of new healthcare technologies, services, or interventions that address pressing global health issues and aid underserved populations. The breadth of our research is evident in the diverse range of global health issues we explored, including but not limited to: 1. Women's empowerment and reintegration programs. 2. Telehealth systems for Native American children with complex medical needs. 3. Performance of COVID-19 exposure notification systems. 4. Mental health interventions during natural disasters in low- and middle-income countries. 5. Cancer screening and treatment access in underserved communities. 6. HIV care and support services. 7. Predictors of disease severity in pediatric febrile illnesses. 8. Cost-effectiveness analyses of various interventions (malaria detection, CAR T-cell therapy, cervical cancer screening). 9. Social media analysis of tobacco product marketing strategies. 10. Pediatric emergency triage tools for resource-limited settings. 11. The impact of food insecurity on mental health. 12. Acculturation, diet quality, and their connection to childhood obesity. 13. Nursing perspectives on COVID-19 pandemic interventions. This wide range of topics underscores the multifaceted nature of global health challenges and the critical need for innovative, interdisciplinary solutions. Furthermore, cost-effectiveness analyses, cost-of-illness studies, and implementation studies can inform strategies for sustainable and scalable solutions.

Big news from Karoo Health today. This partnership will accelerate their ability to deliver value based care (VBC) for cardiovascular disease. If you are frustrated with America's healthcare system, VBC will give you reasons to be hopeful. Not only does it drive down costs, but it is better care. Initial data shows 29% of patients using Karoo's model have been diverted from at least one unnecessary ER visit.
