Congrats to firm client Andreessen Horowitz on their recent investment in Talkiatry's $130 million Series C! Two significant barriers to delivering high-quality mental healthcare are (1) limited access to psychiatrists and (2) the lack of technology that can improve both the quality and efficiency of care. Talkiatry addresses both of these barriers for the acute end of the behavioral health market—psychiatric care—by offering virtual treatment covered by patients’ insurance. By employing providers directly and embedding into their workflows, Talkiatry standardizes the quality of physician care and influences patient outcomes over time. In a study of over 1,800 patients, 65% of patients with anxiety or depression no longer have clinically significant symptoms after visiting Talkiatry for an average of five sessions.

Technology has made healthcare information more easily accessible to patients. It allows them to become engaged consumers and should help them in making informed decisions, but what happens when they want to diagnose themselves and take the wheel to drive their own plan of care? Check out the quick tips in the latest article written with my colleague, Cara Staus, CPHRM, FASHRM.
In the latest American Psychiatric Association article our Risk Consultants, Tracey Angelo and Cara Staus, CPHRM, FASHRM discuss the risks of using online research for diagnosis and treatment. https://lnkd.in/dvyGQgX4

I'm starting to think that healthcare's growing obsession with AI and apps is overcomplicating the quest for better patient engagement. I'm admittedly obsessed, too. A primary care clinic in the Midwest was able to boost engagement and lower depression scores with just a phone call. Its therapists identified a group of 502 patients who hadn't completed a PHQ-9 depression screen in the prior 12 months. They reached 241 (48%) of the identified patients by phone and were able to complete the PHQ-9 for 225 (93%) of those. About 2/3 (150) of patients who completed the screen had actionable depression symptoms, and 136 (91%) of them agreed to therapy. Bottom line, over a quarter of targeted patients agreed to engage in therapy to address ongoing depression symptoms following a low-tech intervention. This study was just published in the peer-reviewed journal, Psychiatric Services. It's a reminder that fundamentals are important when trying to keep patients engaged in care.

The future is brighter for our patients with PTSD… The pieces are falling into place, next step is to ensure our healthcare system is ready and patients can access care. We can do this!! Assumptions: 1. MDMA will be likely approved by the FDA 2. Be prescribed by a licensed prescriber with the authority to prescribe controlled substances 3. DEA will move the MDMA from Schedule I to between II and V. 4. It will have a REMS restriction so it can only be taken at medical settings under supervision by a licensed professional. 5. It is possible that the prescriber may not be the therapist conducting MDMA assisted therapy sessions.
#MDMA is one step closer to being approved! Do you know what it would look like to for patients with #ptsd? Andrew Penn, RN, NP, CNS, PMHNP-BC & Arsalan "RC" Shah, PharmD, MBA share their expertise on a plausible patient pathway. Their crystal ball predicts the steps patients with PTSD might undergo in this groundbreaking process. From diagnosis to integration sessions, it's a well-thought-out journey under the careful eye of healthcare professionals. Assumptions: 1. MDMA will be likely approved by the FDA 2. According to the World Health Organization, 1 billion people are estimated to suffer from a mental disorder1. Furthermore, 5% of adults (or around 280 million people) are estimated to live with depression, which is a great contributor to the global burden of disease and the leading cause of disability worldwide. Tuomas Neuvonen, CEO at Sooma Medical shares his thoughts on "Mental health patients can wait up to 18 months for treatment. How can at-home neuromodulation help close the care-access gap?", check out his latest article recently published in Medhealth Review : https://lnkd.in/g22sSGub

I recently saw the news that the FDA approved zuralonone, the first oral medication specifically indicated for treating postpartum depression. More than one in ten women who give birth will suffer from postpartum depression and it can often go undiagnosed. It can be a serious and devastating illness for mother, child, and other family members to go through. While the research on this treatment still has limitations regarding its longevity and long-term side effects, it’s encouraging to see more accessible and less invasive solutions. The previous treatment, brexanolone, requires a 60-hour hospital infusion and comes with a substantial cost. While women need more than improved medication options - for example, psychological and social support - it’s encouraging to see a step forward in psychiatric medicine for women. We’re still often underrepresented in clinical research, particularly on psychiatric drugs, where we make up 60 percent of the patient population, but just 42 percent of trial participants. I hope that this new medication - should it prove as effective in practice, is one more step in reducing the gender gap in healthcare. #womenshealth #healthcare #clinicalresearch #mentalhealth https://lnkd.in/e6AeKeSv

Mental health experts involved in DSM-5-TR published in 2022 enjoyed industry's favours! The article below investigates the financial ties of members involved in the American Psychiatric Association's DSM-5-TR. The study found that a significant percentage of the members had industry ties, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest in the development of psychiatric guidelines. Of the 92 panel and task force members analyzed, 55 (60%) received payments from the industry. These panel members collectively received over $14 million. The payments included various types such as food and beverages, travel, consulting, and compensation for services other than consulting. The most common type of payment was for food and beverages. The article suggests that financial conflicts of interest among panel members are prevalent and calls for higher standards in the selection process to ensure the integrity of the manual. Methodology: It uses the Open Payments database to analyze the types and amounts of compensation received by these members from industry during 2016-2019.This database tracks payments made by pharmaceutical and medical device industries to physicians and teaching hospitals. https://lnkd.in/eVrJnRYs #Mentalhealth #Psychiatry #DSM5TR #EthicsInMedicine
