INSIGHT of the day : OTT + CTV getting close to broadcast/pay TV ad revenue in US Rember Ampère was announcing in ‘24 the cross of revenue curves between Pay TV and OTT. We now have information on the ads split. Video advertising revenue in the U.S. grew 10.6% YoY in 2023, rising to $52.1 billion. STREAMING BUNDLES: Is the cable box making a comeback!? Subscriber churn remains an issue for SVOD services – 42% of US streaming subscribers report that they “'regularly subscribe, cancel and resubscribe,” according to Ampere’s Media Consumer survey covering 1Q24. But bundling streaming services can have a significant impact on mitigating the issue. Ampere cites Disney subscribers as an example: Consumers who had previously churned and then returned to take the Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle are 59% less likely to churn within 12 months than those who take Disney+ alone, based on 1Q23 sign-ups. Ampere also found that US resubscribers skew younger (aged 18-44), are more likely to be in family households, and are typically avid media consumers. And with that wide media diet, the cohort is 40% more likely than average to exhibit signs of subscription fatigue and 21% more likely to desire unified access to content across different services. Which makes bundles, Ampere concludes, a key strategy in subscriber retention. The cable box is making a comeback! This time, it's on your mobile device$!

With more businesses branching into FAST experiences, it's clear that this trend is only growing. One of the key outcomes of this is the TV-like experience being offered as part of a device service. This channel is accessible to all customers who purchased Roku’s low barrier-to-entry devices. The advantages of cable advertising are now in the domain of tech. #FASTTV #Innovation #AdTech

I still believe the best way to buy all media, when possible, is programmatically to enable decisioning. However, the current setup isn't efficient and frankly kinda sucks when it comes to TV. Between fraud and unnecessary middlemen that don't add value, we need a change. (Yes, Goodway Group is already on its way to a huge CTV buying overhaul that will deliver 30-40% more CTV value for brands shortly!)

"And the studio shrunk its streaming loss to $286 million for the first quarter, an improvement over a $511 million loss in Q1 2023. Kudos Samuel Youn. It's great to see this called out from premium publishers. MFA in some senses was encouraged over the years by giving such importance on the (now perceived as) vanity metrics and KPIs. Take for example infinite scroll which until recently was perceived as a positive way to increase content consumption and in turn yield more revenue in comparison to traditional clicks to more content. Now it's been targeted as a source or signal of MFA. Everyone along the chain between the publisher and the buyer benefited from an increase in revenue which Samuel rightly points out was heavily incentivised through rev share based relationships. The answer may be clear (find a way to incentivise non MFA behavior) but the path there is murk at best if only left to publishers to remedy on their own... especially if they are handed more rev share based solutions to help solve things. Also love your call out to Sovrn as they have moved away from rev shares (credit to Walter Knapp for seeing this years ago on the SSP side). It takes alot to go against the grain but I believe (hope?) that we will see more to follow. #adtech #mfa
