Car dealerships are still relevant despite digital disruption, according to the 2024 Urban Science Dealership Transformation Index. The study, polling 3,005 U.S. car buyers, reveals a rising importance of dealerships, with an overall score of 56 out of 100. Notably, Generation Z shows increased openness to dealer guidance, with 51% strongly agreeing that dealers provide easy and convenient buying experiences. While traditional in-person purchasing remains preferred, non-traditional options are gaining traction. Electric vehicle owners are notably open to online purchasing, signaling a shift in buyer behavior. We know that many dealers have been impacted by the recent Cyberattacks on CDK. And as a result, AutoFi has been inundated with inquiries from dealers, OEMs and Lenders looking for solutions (especially related to desking and working lease deals). Say it with me: incentives drive behavior. Biggest concern I hear from Stellantis dealers (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, etc): Incentives are out of whack -- in a big way. The automaker has abruptly stopped paying some of its dealers for positive customer surveys and is instead paying them on the "number of cars ordered." (???) It's unclear to me at the moment how far and wide this has spread (nationally vs. regionally) and how many dealers have been impacted... But either way, feels like an uncalculated, short-term move by a brand struggling to hit sales targets. Weird move.
