    The United States federal government is the nation’s largest consumer of energy, and Information technology (IT) represents 30-40% of US organizations’ total energy consumption. As a result of the Executive Order 13514’s call for the US government to “lead by example” in environmental stewardship and sustainable practices, agencies have an urgent need to identify and implement cost-effective, timely, and mission-sensitive solutions to lower their IT energy consumption. General Services Administration (GSA), which oversees about one-third of IT procurement spend annually on behalf of government agencies, faces challenges as it seeks to stay at the forefront of the government’s sustainability imperative. We discuss five steps GSA can take to become the provider of choice for government agencies’ Green IT procurement needs.
