What drove earned media in May? Stacker sent out 3,175 stories from 75+ sources to a network of >3k publishers in May. Average story saw 302 pickups - what's there to learn from those that outperformed benchmarks?👇 1. "Your Money / Your Life" is the "if it bleeds, it leads" for features and data journalism. Stories around topics that impact pocketbooks (eg. inflation, college majors) or health (eg. boeing 787) were all over the top 100. 2. Kitchen table topics --- make it for dinner. While hundreds of stories touched on money and health, those that outperformed benchmarks found a way to turn the topic at hand into a "kitchen table topic," - stories with easy angles for conversation fodder. Ask: what's the frame for this story that makes someone bring it up later on? 3. Timely News - Stories with fast follow ons to current events - Boeing 787 woes, college graduation season, etc - were common in top 100. 4. "Accessible Travel" - The amount of travel related content contributed to wire jumped 3x in May as we head into summer. But the top performers all focused on travel for the everyman. Less jet setting to Europe, more roadtrips, national parks, local attractions, etc. h/t to Ken Romano for lending his brain on trends, follow me @ Noah Greenberg for more insights from our network

Google Ads are powerful for DTC because it is a post-intent channel in most cases. The prospects you’re chasing already know what they want. They just need to know that your product is: • Great quality • Great value for money • Has great customer experience, should anything go wrong Focus on these in your Google Ads copy

So we recently started getting inundated with spam on the Upgrow contact form. I was tempted to enable a Captcha test, but I know that increases annoyance by 100%. How do I reduce spam and not reduce the conversion rate? I decided to try something different and added a final form question, "What's your favorite movie?". After a week, the CVR on the form has actually increased by 10% despite adding one more question, and the spam has decreased. As another positive, we now have a discovery call icebreaker. #happyaccident

Ten years ago brands like Zillow and American Express nailed it as pioneers of brands launching media companies - while hundreds tried and failed. Now we're in a new era for brand publishing... What's different? 🚀 The Journey For the brands mentioned above, the strategy was a success. But many brands struggled to find their footing, leading to the shutdown of countless content initiatives. Today we’re seeing a resurgence and a true new era for brand publishing, fueled by lessons learned from past challenges. 🔍 What’s Different Now? Today, successful brand publishing has 3 important components: 1. Distribution Focus 2. Strategic ROI 3. Measured Investment. More on this in my latest article - link in first comment. #BrandPublishing #ContentMarketing #BrandJournalism #EarnedMedia Image Credits: Roman Samborskyi - Shutterstock

This will sound "duh" but a lot of new DTC brands don't realize it until it's too late. Invest in really good photography. The difference between a forgettable eCommerce site and one that gets the order (besides a good story, good marketing copy, and social proof) can come down to the quality of the creative assets. In a world of a million knock-offs and shoddy products, showing high-quality photographs of your actual product in the hands of real people in a genuine setting: big difference. We've never had a situation where we've had too many great photographs. The more the merrier. If you're a DTC Brand CEO looking to boost your revenue, then grab 'The 5 Ways High-Performing DTC Brands Get 10-20% eCommerce Conversion Rates'. This guide reveals the 5 tactics that the highest-performing DTC brands employ daily to achieve 10-20%+ conversion rates on their eCommerce websites. I took over the interim CMO position at Tidio about 6 months ago (DM me if you'd be a great permanent CMO for Tidio). Since then, I've been talking to 50+ DTC marketers & CX folks trying to understand their biggest frustrations with the current solutions. Here are the 3 most common pains I heard: 1: Too many SaaS companies are telling CX teams to "automate as much of their workflow with AI as possible." This is a bad take, IMO. There are so many customer service interactions that are brand-building opportunities. CX teams don't want to automate those--and why would they? 2: Pricing is getting crazy for some of the current solutions out there (I'll let you connect the dots). But a lot of the lower-priced CX options are too barebones. Teams are looking for a solid product with respectable pricing (I might be biased...but I know a product 😉). 3: Integrations matter a lot when brands are choosing a software tool to use. For example, brands might want their customers to be able to resolve subscription issues via a customer service chat. This is an area we're thinking about a lot going into Q2. Let me open the floor up to you now: If you're in CX, what are your biggest "I'm ripping my hair out" frustrations with the software out there in 2024? Anything I missed here? Let me know in the comments below. PS: I'll be sharing more of what we're working on at Tidio, and more learnings from being in the Shopify ecosystem for nearly a decade, here on social. If that sounds moderately interesting, would love for you to follow.

SMB MARKET SENDS MIXED SIGNALS If you follow Small Business trends like I do, you are always interested in two key reports: The Census Bureau's Business Formation Statistics and the NFIB's SMB Optimism Index. Both are out for May and tell two quite different stories. Here are the key findings from each: SMB OPTIMISM INDEX: ◽ May index came in at 90.5 (up 0.8 from April) and hit a 2024 high. ◽ Despite ticking up each month, May marks the 29th straight month the index remained below the historical average of 98. ◽ 15% of SMB owners plan to hire in the next quarter. ◽ 22% of those surveyed reported inflation is their single most important problem in operating their business. ◽ 6% of owners reported that access to financing was their biggest concern. ◽ The Uncertainty Index rose to 85 - its highest level since November 2020. CENSUS BUREAU BFS REPORT: ◽ May saw slightly less than 424,000 New Business Applications filed. ◽ This represented a 5.4% drop from May 2023 and a 1.5% drop from April. ◽ May was the first month in over 3 years in which all 4 Census Bureau regions saw a YOY decline in applications. ◽ Just 12 states posted YOY application growth in May, with Oregon being the biggest winner - up 14%. ◽ The South, which has typically shown the most growth, logged the greatest YOY decline - with Alabama showing the largest national decline (-18%). ◽ Year-to-date, 2.17 million new business applications have been filed - down 2.3% from the first 5 months of 2023. We typically see a drop in New Business Formations in the months leading up to a Presidential Election as entrepreneurs sit on the sidelines trying to figure out if the election results in a SMB friendly environment. We will continue to watch these trends and share our findings with you, but we would also like to hear what you are hearing and seeing in your individual businesses. Please share in the comments. #smallbusinessformations #SMB #B2SMB #economictrends
