In April of 2013, Rana Plaza, an eight-story garment manufacturing facility in the capital city of Dhaka, Bangladesh came crashing down – killing over 1,100 people and severely injuring thousands more. In April of 2013, Rana Plaza, an eight-story garment manufacturing facility in the capital city of Dhaka, Bangladesh came crashing down – killing over 1,100 people and severely injuring thousands more. This was the single deadliest clothing-factory accident in history, and it took place in the twenty-first century.
I was a high school junior at the time of this event, I remember watching the enormous pile of dust covered bodies with the kind of detached concern that these sorts of international catastrophes receive from foreign observers. I can still recall feeling a sense relief that this sort of thing didn’t happen in my own country, that our businesses and government had safety measures in place to prevent senseless death and pain. Like most people, I didn’t understand that those workers inside of Rana Plaza were fulfilling orders for American companies, the very places you and I shop, like Walmart, J.C. Penney, and Children’s Place.
Despite the protectionist rhetoric currently circling many countries, the fact that world continues to flatten as globalization increases cannot be disputed. In this global economy, supply chains are the roads that connect us with goods, people, and information. Many, diverse people have a hand in paving those roads, and I want to give them a face; so that the next time you take a sip of coffee, or look at the t-shirt folded in your drawer, you see more than the materials.
