My gratitude for mentors today, a habit I am trying to ensure I have as muscle memory, is for someone who never was on and likely hasn’t even heard of LinkedIn. My step father, Joseph Weiss, was an educator at the high school level, in East San Jose, my hometown. In my youth, it was a very different town but even then had great diversity in everything, from background and language to culture and income. As an educator who wanted to help every kid become successful - on a human, not just career level - he was tirelessly passionate in finding ways to reach and teach those who others gave up on. I remember classes and workshops and books on understanding learning styles and how different brains work. I remember having foreign exchange students staying in our already overcrowded home and how he and my mother were always so thoughtful on making outsiders feel welcomed. Some of my learnings from watching how he navigated include: Diversity, in language, culture, background, thinking and most everything else, is a big net positive. Seek out those who aren’t the regular or easy choices for opportunity. Like me, some of the most difficult kids can be surprising in what they can do, if given the opportunity and active support. He gave me opportunities to lead activities that no one else would have thought I either would nor could do. Compassion and empathy are shown most often in the strongest leaders. Positional power or carrot and stick approaches are the tools of those who aren’t yet good leaders. Stay curious. To this day, when I talk with him on the phone, he’s still curious about what I’m doing, and always is inspiring in his response about my work, especially my “whats” and “whys”. As is my ongoing learning from these reflection, the main thing is to be actively supporting others. But especially those who others who haven’t had those same opportunities. And seek to help them have those same opportunities so they can have the same shot at success that I have been so fortunate and blessed to have had.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is at war and Andy Jassy has a new consigliere Matt Garman. Amazon.com Inc. has strategically positioned Matt Garman as the new CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS), much like a wartime consigliere in the vein of the iconic film "The Godfather." Garman assumes command in a critical era for AWS, marked by intense competition for cloud and AI supremacy. This period follows significant shifts brought about by the pandemic, a new wave of developers, and rapid advancements in generative AI technology. AWS finds itself in the midst of a fierce battleground, not only maintaining its cloud infrastructure leadership but also vying for dominance in the burgeoning AI sector. The one other wildcard in favor of AWS with Garman (besides being a product czar) is that he's very partner friendly which will be a key part of keeping AWS ahead. New Tech Northwest last night. My fellow volunteer and I checked in 70+ attendees, greeting and instructing each one to make a name tag and include "One Fun Fact." My two funs facts (hard to choose just one) are Climate and Birds. If we spent more than 5 mins chatting I'd hazard a guess one of these interests (read: passions) came up. Last night was probably the best New Tech I've attended with the focus on Social Impact, which happens to be my consulting area of focus. Jennifer Lucero, Founder, MyBeacon - the social action network had the audience riveted with her emotional founders journey and impressive recent launch on the App and Google Play store (download pending). Mark Horoszowski, Co-Founder, Moving Worlds - which develops global leaders,builds more responsible companies and empowers social enterprises through their innovative volunteer matching projects with corporate employees. Great connecting with and chatting with Derek Megyesi, MBA, MSc, Darian Parrish, Mark Horoszowski,Ben Brandt, Konan Shimizu, and Blake McCracken and chatting about Climate and Clean Tech. My first boss gave everyone an essay called "Message to Garcia" to read during their first day on the job. Quick summary: President McKinley needs to get a message to one of his generals. He asks a soldier to help. His instructions are minimal: “Get this message to Garcia.” That’s it. Soldier takes the note, and delivers it, no questions asked. Not even, “Who the hell is Garcia?” He didn't say "That's not really my job," nor did he ask "How am I supposed to do this?" He just figured shit out. The goal was to show our team what it meant to take initiative, and not rely on others for help. It underscored the importance of resourcefulness and problem-solving skills in navigating challenges independently. And it continues to be my mantra to this day. Yes, there’s time when you need to ask questions, and yes I believe in collaboration. But we do others a disservice when we don’t pause for a minute and consider what we have in our toolbox. We default to Slacking a coworker or sending another email when a lot of times, we already have the answer. Stop. Wait for a minute. Think. 1. What information do I need to get this message to Garcia? 2. From this list, what do I already have available, and/or what do I have access to? 3. What steps can I take to fill in the missing pieces? Figure shit out.

Today I'm celebrating the journey. There are days when corporate #sustainability work feels incredibly hard, slow or like we're going in the wrong direction. But there are also moments where you get to collaborate with your fellow employees, connect with peers and see how driven we all are to make an impact, to solve the big problems in collaborative ways and to make the future a better one for the beautiful place we call home. I firmly believe that each of us, and each company has the opportunity to start their decarbonization journey. It doesn't need to be a huge first step, everything matters in changing processes, approaches, and looking for opportunities to innovate. Planting the seeds in your company about ways that sustainable approaches could save resources, fuel innovation and serve customer needs is a great first step.

I am deeply honored and humbled to be recognized by Women We Admire as one of the Top 50 Women Leaders of California. This acknowledgment means a lot, and I am truly grateful to be in the company of such accomplished and inspiring women. As I pause to reflect on this recognition, I am reminded of the critical importance of our ongoing efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in leadership roles. A recent report by S&P Global Market Intelligence highlights concerning trends in gender parity, indicating a potential slowdown in the growth of women's representation in senior corporate positions. In 2023, women held just 11.8% of C-suite roles assessed, down from 12.2% the previous year—the first decline since 2005. This data underscores the urgency of our collective mission to break barriers and create pathways for women in leadership. It reaffirms my commitment to advocating for inclusivity and empowerment at every opportunity and my determination to contribute to meaningful change and to inspire future generations of leaders. #WomenLeaders #DiversityandInclusion #Gratitude #WomeninTech

Yesterday was a great day. I had the opportunity to visit a client with our CEO, Thomas Kurian, and Google Cloud executive leadership to share how our services are helping to push market boundaries with leading brands. In that meeting I had the opportunity to personally share how Google Cloud is breaking boundaries and helping clients create new value in the Travel and Transportation industry space. Alphabet announced earnings, with Google Cloud reporting sales of $9.6B with a profit of $900M, well ahead of analyst projections of $672.4M.  We announced our first ever dividend, a stock buyback of $70B, and stock is up over 10%. The things we are working on, like converging Google’s consumer ecosystem with the travel industry ecosystem through Gemini and Google Cloud’s AI capabilities, change the landscape for consumer and employee engagement.
