It would appear that the “new realities” public radio has been discussing for years have arrived, and they have our full attention. Audiences are down in most places, deficits are mounting and staff are being cut, and the editorial heart of our news coverage is in question. As Programming leaders, the question of the moment is, “what now?” We can “admire the problem,” or we can act. On April 24 at 2p CT, Paragon and Listen Again Tomorrow want to start a conversation - ideas for "what now". What meaningful steps can the programming community take individually and together to respond to this new reality? RSVP at listenagaintomorrow at gmail We imagine April 24th as the first of three sessions - earning back the core, new things for new audiences, and scalable/sustainable digital. Facilitating – so much more than just managing a meeting. With my Community Broadcasting hat on, I recently spent the day being ’facilitated’. Bryce Ives had the challenge of leading a bunch of talkative diverse humans in an important discussion about the future of media, and boy did he do a great job! It got me thinking more about the art and skill of facilitating productive gatherings. Facilitation is a dry word to describe a process that is really quite magical. You have heard of 'cat herding'. Wrangling humans - particularly large numbers of humans - is even trickier! You might be thinking, how do I do that? You might even be terrified to try that for the first time. Learning at the feet of some inspiring facilitators (hello Heidi Martin, Kevin Nuttall, Randall Pearce, Paul Taylor, Nancy Hromin, Kate Chaffer and many more), here are a few tips if you find yourself in the facilitation hot seat for the first time: Be crystal clear about the outcome.🎯 What are you here to do? State it up front, test it with everyone, revisit it as the session goes on. There is nothing more dispiriting than a gab fest with no outcome. Bite sized chunks are your friend. 🧩 Plan the session ahead of time and don’t try to squeeze in too much. Imagine the session like you are giving directions – first you go here, then you go there. After a series of steps you get to the outcome. Try walking and talking. 👨🏼‍🦽 If ever I need ideas, I walk. Taking a stroll with a partner is a relaxed way to have a chat. Send your participants in pairs for a trot around the block and be surprised at what they come back with. Keep it pacey and upbeat. 🙂 Dwelling too long on anything is the enemy of good facilitation. ‘Hit it with pace’ as my favourite Bachelor used to say. Respect the group's time and energy. ⏱️ Keep an eye on the clock and check in on energy levels as you go. And beware the dreaded ‘afternoon slump’ - not even the mints will get you through that! Recently I spoke to the students in the “movie magic” summer camp here at Exploration Place. Last question one kid asked was “do you think A.I. will replace your job?” I said “probably one day.” But not today, kids! We made LOTS of videos over the last month with the new DC Super Heroes exhibit opening. The two I’m highlighting here proved to be yet another in a continuous line of reminders about how important sound design is to video production, filmmaking, etc… I had a very specific vision for the live science show promo. The goal was summer, blockbuster movie vibes, with a sprinkling of the old Batman animated series from the 90s. I searched and sliced (for too long probably) until I found as song with juuuust the right notes. Then of course none of the slow-mo footage had any sound so it was fun trying to find things that would work for those shots. In the exhibit tour video with Brooke, that you can see here: https://lnkd.in/gEcsibMJ we put our brains together while we were filming and came up with the bit of her whooshing off screen (that’s the technical term). Finding the right “whoosh” and footstep sounds was critical and it all came together nicely. REALLY love the ending Brooke and I arrived at for this one as we were rushing to get done before the museum opened. These aren't the most complicated examples of sound design, which can be an ultra tedious process - that is sure to be replaced one day by the single click of a button; but when there is time to do it I am always amazed by how much sound effects can elevate a project.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  ARNOLD “ARNIE” WEISS’ STATEMENT ON JUNETEENTH HOLIDAY MIAMI, FL (JUNE 19, 2024) – Today we celebrate the final emancipation of slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865 more than two and a half years after President Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation.   Even though it would not be until December when the 13th amendment would end slavery throughout the United States it is important that we take time to not only celebrate the joy of freedom but also to remember the lengths to which those who opposed it were willing to go to preserve slavery. Unfortunately, we currently find ourselves in a climate where these same forces obstruct progress and threaten with violence (and in some cases actions) if they do not get the political outcomes they want.  This is why we have a 6-3 Supreme Court that doesn’t reflect the political or demographic realities of a country where a majority has voted Democratic in 7 of the last 8 Presidential Elections.  These same people continue to gerrymander districts and limit the voices of blacks, browns, and all people who do not agree with them.  They have kept women from attaining equality under the Constitution and continue to chip away at their rights to privacy and to make their own medical decisions. The people of Miami-Dade face a real choice in August and I know that they will vote for me because I have a plan for actually working to improve accessibility to the ballot box for all legally eligible voters; and protecting the ideals that all Americans and the Democratic Party should stand for.  Willis Howard has made it clear that he will keep the status quo at the Department despite the obvious and significant budget and leadership consequences of just building on top of the existing structure.  JC Planas has spent his entire career fighting to protect and further the voting goals of the Republican Party and also promises to maintain the status quo at the Department.  ###  For more information and press inquiries please contact: media@arnieweiss.com

What is a Jib Shot? https://ift.tt/1dZR0rU When I was a senior in college, I finally was able to access all the fancy tools from my film school (so what if we went to film school!). The most coveted was the jib, a piece of equipment so popular you literally had to wait four years to use. Once you had that jib, it felt like the sky was the limit when it came to camera angles. In the world of filmmaking, camera shots aren't just a point-and-shoot affair. Cinematographers utilize a wide range of techniques to tell stories visually, and one of the most dynamic tools in their arsenal is the jib shot. So, what exactly is it? Today. we'll go over the job and talk about some examples of its use in cinema. Let's dive in. Jib Shot Definition A jib shot is achieved by using a the commonly known tool known as, you guessed it, the camera jib. A jib is essentially a boom arm with a camera mounted on one end and a counterweight on the other. The camera operator (or remote control system) sits at the counterweight end, allowing them to pan, tilt, and move the camera along the length of the boom. This creates dramatic, sweeping movements that can rise high, dip low, or move in complex arcs, all while maintaining a smooth, flowing motion. The Difference Between a Jib and Crane Shot When I started writing this article, it felt eerily similar to the crane shot. So I wanted to get to the bottom of what separates a jib from a crane. Jibs and Cranes: Sometimes Interchangeable In casual filmmaking conversation, the terms "jib" and "crane" are often used interchangeably to refer to a camera moving up, down, and with wide arcs. The Technical Distinction Here's the more precise difference: Jib: A jib is the arm that extends out, providing that sweeping camera motion. It's typically mounted on a tripod or dolly for support. Crane: A crane is the entire system that includes the jib, a base for stability (often wheeled), counterweights, and sometimes even a seat for the camera operator. In summary, not all jib shots are crane shots if the jib isn't part of a larger crane setup. But all crane shots are jib shots, since they involve the use of a jib arm. Make sense? Maybe? Why Filmmakers Use Jib Shots  Jib shots offer several key advantages in filmmaking: Dynamism: Jib shots add a powerful sense of motion and visual energy that can't be easily replicated with handheld or tripod-mounted cameras. Scale: They help establish a sense of grandeur or scope within a scene. Imagine revealing a breathtaking landscape or a bustling cityscape from a high vantage point. Flexibility: Jibs can move the camera in ways that would be impossible with a dolly or crane. They can swoop in close, gracefully move around obstacles, and add depth to a scene. Emotional impact: The fluid yet powerful camera movement of a jib shot can evoke a range of emotions, from excitement and wonder to suspense and isolation. JOURNALISM TIP OF THE WEEK: Soundbites are for emotion. One of the biggest mistakes I see young journalists make is letting interviewees tell their stories. As a general rule, soundbites should NOT be for facts. Remember, YOU are a storyteller. You should give facts with your script. Soundbites should support those facts with emotion and/or context. Steer clear of what I call “soundbite weaving”. That’s when, instead of storytelling, the writer sets up soundbites by summarizing what they are about to say. Example. VO - The police chief says crime is on the rise SOT - “Crime is up 20% in the last year. Up 30% since 2022”. Better. VO- New APD data shows crime is up 20% in Atlanta this year. It’s up more than 40% in the downtown area alone. SOT - “since we moved here last year, several of my neighbors cars have been broken into. We’re thinking about moving to a safer place.” Bonus tip there, using a real person (versus an official) for the soundbite. Read your scripts after writing them. If you are often using phrases like “he says” or “she adds”, you might be missing an opportunity to write a more compelling story.

It is a term that is often used to refer to Africa as a whole, or to specific parts of Africa that are inhabited by black people. 🌍 Historical Context The term Abibiman was first used in the 19th century by the Akan people of Ghana. It was used to distinguish their land from the land of the Europeans, who were colonizing Africa at the time. ✊🏿 Cultural Significance Today, the term Abibiman is still used by many Africans as a symbol of their pride and identity. It is a reminder of their shared history and culture, and of their connection to the African continent.
