#presidentialelections #mexico #electoralobservation #grulac #ipu Last Sunday, June 2, delegates from the Geopolitical Group of Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC) of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) participated in an electoral observation mission in the United Mexican States. It was a historical milestone. With an electoral roll made up of almost 100 million people, citizen participation in the vote was 60.92%, registering almost 56 million votes. The people elected their President for the next 6 years (2024-2030); to the total of 128 senators and 500 deputies (new integration of both chambers of the Congress of the Union); and the heads of eight state governments; the head of the government of the capital city of Mexico; and local representative entities, city councils, municipal boards and mayors' offices, totaling more than 19,000 positions. The official political alliance “Let's keep making history”, made up of MORENA, the PT and the Green Party, won almost 36 million votes (59.75%), bringing the first woman in the history of the country to the Presidency: Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. Her motto was: “Honesty, results and love for the people.” Second place went to “Fuerza y ​​Corazón por México” (PAN; the PRI and PRD), whose candidate, also a woman, Xóchitl Gálvez Ruiz, obtained 16.5 million votes (27.45% of the votes). Her motto: “For a Mexico without fear.” The only male candidate, Jorge Álvarez Máynez, from the Citizen Movement, obtained 6.2 million votes (10.32%), carrying as his motto “New Mexico is serious.” The results can be consulted on the website of the INE (@Instituto Nacional Electoral) of Mexico: https://lnkd.in/dyydDPut In summary, the Mexican federal electoral system is robust and professional. However, there are at least two worrying factors: a) the level of political violence, which recorded murders of both pre-candidates and candidates for electoral positions before, during and immediately after the elections were held; and b) the impact of the government in power in the electoral contest, through the use of its dominant position from the State to obtain advantages over its political rivals, particularly in relation to mass communication (via press conferences whose purpose was not directly linked to issues that are purely public management, if not electoral) and to the direct impact of the orientation of social policies. Beyond that, once the election has been held, it is appropriate to congratulate the people and the new government of Mexico and wish them the best of luck. We must also highlight the importance of counting on Mexico to deal with global challenges and build, all together, a better world.

Activism in #Bogotacycling is interesting. I took this short clip as part of an activity where activists were promoting greater awareness of other types of bicycles, in this case cargo bikes. It was organized by a women's collective that creates actions to promote cycling and safety. It's one of many dozens of groups that exist in the city, many of which are more localized depending on the "localidad" (borough) their members live in. There is no definitive writeup on activism in Bogota, but some of us have tried to document it properly. Cycling infrastructure improvements were mostly government-led for some time, especially from 1995-2008 or so. Everyone will recall that more than 200 kilometers of bikeways were built by Enrique Peñalosa during his mandate 1998-2000 (he later had a second mandate, 2016-2019, where he continued that work). The tipping point of activism was in 2008, when the infamous mayor Samuel Moreno began to neglect and actively destroy bikeways (yes, he is the one who later went to jail for stealing money from public works with his brother - he has now died, allegedly...). When Moreno began to destroy what all other mayors before him had promoted, citizen groups started to become stronger and more numerous. We created the Bogota "bicycle roundtable" with several people from academia, NGOs, even the Chamber of Commerce and others joined. We created a "Bicycle Manifesto" and promoted it in the media (and I would later give it in person to the next mayor, Petro, during a public event at the beginning of his mandate). When Petro saw that cycling seemed to be a popular thing, he began to hire bicycle activists in key positions in the city. That strengthened technical knowledge and improved the way bikeways would be built from the on (many of those activists continue to be in public positions today). After Petro (2012-2015) and during Peñalosa 2.0 (2016-2019) and Claudia López (2020-2023) mandates, cycling has become very strong, as has activism. We need a lot more work, and we now have a mayor (Carlos Galán) who has promised he'll build.... zero bikeways during his mandate. Government has expressed "there's no more places to build them" in internal meetings.... Oh well, let's see what activism can do this time. Jóvenes Adelante 2024: Preparing for Radical Economic Integration of North America The political, macroeconomic and demographic landscape of North America - the world - is changing. Covid, supply chain issues, transoceanic transport costs and global conflicts have conspired to make our conceptions of “globalization” radically change. The bottom line for North America is that offshore manufacturing is on its way out - China long term for example, is in decline. The solution for North American business and consumers lies to the South, with Mexico. As Jóvenes Adelante continues to invest in higher education, our eyes are not only on San Miguel de Allende as we have known it, but as a regional member of the Bajio/central Mexico - one of the two developing economic regions with the greatest economic and human capital potential. Arguably the most undeveloped resource in Mexico is its college-aged youth. A “young” country demographically perfectly positioned to maximize its potential neighboring the US and Canada, its greatest failure is in achieving equity within its population, and specifically in education. Only 23% of the critical age group between 25 and 34 years old has a college degree; only 45% of the overall Mexican population has a high school diploma; the graduation rate for those seeking a higher education is only 26%. No economy in the history of the western world has been able to build a sustainable, modern economy without a well educated middle class. By investing in the education of the Mexican workforce, we are not only building a brighter future for individuals, but we are also laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth and greater prosperity for all. Companies have the opportunity not only to benefit from a qualified and talented workforce, but also to contribute to the development of the society in which they operate. Participating in the training and development of the next generation of professionals can differentiate a company as a leader in its sector and strengthen its position in the business community. Colombia seeks to leverage offsets to enhance defence capabilities, while extending benefits to other sectors to create an ecosystem for development. At the Global Industrial Cooperation Association 2024 Spring Conference, the Vice Minister for Strategy and Planning at the MoD, Luis Edmundo Suárez. M.Sc., emphasised that Colombia’s offset policy aims to align military procurement with national development goals. On 27 May, the Ministry of Defence issued Resolution No. 2029, which establishes the Defence Sector Committee for the analysis and approval of industrial and social offset projects submitted by foreign suppliers. An upcoming decree from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism will be introduced to improve offset implementation, identify productivity gaps, and foster sustainable growth through strategic projects within the framework of Colombia’s re-industrialisation policy. The strategy of strengthening the IDG Colombia Centre-IDGCC is moving in the right direction. Last month we got two new sponsors, Colegio San José de Las Vegas & Fundación Universitaria del Area Andina. We now have two offices, one in Medellin and the other in Bogotá, and two part-time paid staff, a Community Manager and a Program Development Assistant. Last week we inaugurated our new co-working space (in the picture). This semester we have also achieved: * A €1 million grant sent to Erasmus Mundus Programme in alliance with Sistema B Colombia, 3 Universities in Colombia, 2 in Bolivia, and 3 in Europe. If positive, we would have a 3-year program of developing a novel curriculum, a new MOOC around the IDGs and how to impact B-Corps and Purpose-Driven Organizations. * Motores de Esperanza (‘Engines of Hope’) is a novel initiative for developing Local Development Ecosystems in Bogota. The IDGs are a key component within this non-profit initiative, emerged from a public-private-academia alliance. * We are thrilled to have been selected as one of the Countries for the GLSD 2.0—Global Leadership for Sustainable Development, thanks to the Templeton World Charity Foundation and the Inner Green Deal. We had 100+ organizations deeply interested, 50 applications, and as we speak, final recipients are being told of their acceptance.
