Federal Civilian Employees who went to a Military Service Academy can "buy back" their time in the Academy so that it counts towards their Civilian pension. Not only is it low cost, but it can also have major benefits by moving your "start of Federal Service" to an earlier date. #pension #governmentwork #retirementplanning

GovLoop is now accepting new applications for its Featured Contributor program — an opportunity for current and former government employees and industry representatives to write on topics about which they’re passionate. Transition Employment Assistance for Military Spouses (TEAMS) Transition Employment Assistance for Military Spouses and Caregivers (TEAMS) is a series of Department of Labor (DOL) employment workshops that extend the Department’s Transition Assistance Program to assist military spouses and caregivers as they plan and prepare for their job search in pursuit of their employment goals. All TEAMS workshops are instructor-led training, provided at a variety of times, to meet the needs of individuals stationed throughout the world. TEAMS workshops are stand-alone training modules. You can take all of the workshops or just a few and they can be taken in any order that fits your availability and schedule. Workshop Information -All workshops are conducted virtually. Please reach out to your local installation regarding in-person workshops. Schedules and registration links are posted by workshop title in the boxes below. -All registration links display the date and time scheduled in the Eastern Time Zone (ET). You can use this link for Time Conversion Assistance to determine the effective time of the workshop at your location. -Once you register for the workshop, you can expect to receive automated email notifications regarding that workshop. You may have come across job announcements on #USAJOBS like the one below, and had the same question posed recently in the #VFEC: "How does a job advertisement like this work? There's no job description or pay scale. It's just 'send your resume." What you need to know and understand, to have any hope of being hired you still need to submit a tailored 🚨FEDERAL RESUME🚨, that shows how you meet (and surpass) the minimum qualifications for the series and grade you're applying to. Even if those "qualifications" aren't specified in the announcement. That also means those 1 to 2-pager corporate resumes won't cut it, even if you're applying through non-competitive means. In this case, the Internal Revenue Service is looking to non-competitively hire Veterans eligible under a non-competitive hiring authority (e.g., VRA, 30% or more disabled, VA Training Program, etc.). Announcements like this show that the agency has vacancies in dozens (hundreds in this case) of locations, in dozens of job series, and in pay scales that range from GS-5 to 15. But again, how do you tailor to an announcement that has nothing to tailor to? Simple. It's called G.T.S. (Google. That. Stuff). The announcement tells you what job series and professional levels (e.g. GS-5 to 15) the agency is looking for. A simple web search for "0342 - Support Services Specialist" (a series from the announcement below) gave me a link to OPM's, General Schedule Qualification Standards for the series (https://lnkd.in/gXfpAQMu). Many agencies also have careers or jobs pages on their websites that you can get information from (the #IRS can be found at https://lnkd.in/gMG32rG5). You can also go to USAJOBS and search out other announcements using the grades, series, or key words. For instance, using "0342" as a keyword, USAJOBS came back with 22 jobs matching the series (https://lnkd.in/gxSXAy7w), ranging in grades from GS-5 to GS-15. Bottom line, there is PLENTY of information available to use as a foundation to tailor your federal resume to the job series and professional level you're looking for. These announcements are an excellent opportunity to get your federal resume into the hands of hiring managers, but only if you don't send in some "burnt-garbage" and hope for the best.
