The world’s first automated cyberspace hacking contest sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in August of 2016 pitted seven supercomputers against each other for an ultimate battle of the bots. Each system was designed to discover vulnerabilities, defend a host system, and search for potential exploitation avenues on competitor systems. The world’s first automated cyberspace hacking contest sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in August of 2016 pitted seven supercomputers against each other for an ultimate battle of the bots. Each system was designed to discover vulnerabilities, defend a host system, and search for potential exploitation avenues on competitor systems. As the first competition of its kind, DARPA discovered autonomous reasoning about vulnerabilities can be used to repair and patch critical systems in days or hours versus the months or years typical of human analysts today. At the same time, DARPA also discovered automated cybersecurity attacks could compromise systems and exploit vulnerabilities before a human trained cybersecurity analyst even had time to realize something was wrong and cover its tracks to avoid detection thus leaving a system compromised and exploitable for an indefinite timeframe.
This level of automated cybersecurity attack has the potential to change the future of cyberwarfare and defense and must be met with equally strong cybersecurity defensive strategies if we expect to continue to defend national critical infrastructure and key resources.
