How can you engage LGBTQ+ individuals in community outreach?
We no longer have need for "armchair allies", those who would claim to support us but do little to create or enhance inclusion opportunities inside our workplaces or beyond. Advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community - a community that is under severe and constant attack inside our workplaces and out - requires visible action and real commitment. It needs those with privilege to use that power and influence to make room for those without it. Standing behind us and standing alongside us is no longer enough. We need allies to stand in front of us. To take some risks. To fight the fight for us. That's how measurable and lasting change will come to be.

How can you engage LGBTQ+ individuals in community outreach?
When working to understand your LGBTQ+ audience, remember that education is key! Try hard to not rely entirely on a member or members of the LGBTQ+ community to teach you everything you need to know. Plenty of folks have produced amazing educational material on LGBTQ+ topics. Follow your intellectual curiosity, seek these materials out, ask for trusted recommendations. It is all of our jobs to recognize that we have incomplete bodies of knowledge and that what we do posses is likely fraught with assumptions and biases. Education and re-eduation is our work to do! And we cannot stop there for awareness is essential but insufficient. We need to put that knowledge into (inclusive) action!

How can you engage LGBTQ+ individuals in community outreach?
Consistency is key! Establishing trust and trust-based rapport is not a one and done achievement, especially these days when surface-level commitments are easy to identify and are routinely called out, privately and publicly, as performative. Showing up consistently, showing up vocally, and standing up for (not just standing behind or alongside) the community when they are in—and most importantly, when they are not in—the decision making "rooms" is key. That's sponsorship and real allyship, versus words of commitment with little to no meaningful action backing them up.

What are the best content marketing campaigns for personal brands?
Authenticity is the connection point between you and others. You have to be very clear about your authentic story and/or point of view - i.e., defining what value are you uniquely-qualified to contribute to the discussion, the profession, the movement, etc. This clarity is essential. Laundry lists won't help you gain a following. Mirroring what's already out there certainly helps elevate points of view (especially important if these POVs are from historically overlooked communities like women and people of color), but does little advance one's personal brand unless sponsorship of others IS that brand. Reflect upon what defines you... what makes you an expert... and focus on building and reenforcing that expertise with every contribution.

The Queen Bee and The King Wasp: What's All The Buzz?
Catalyst Inc
I continue to wonder about this Queen Bee persona. Why are women oftentimes characterized as the villain? Is it because, given women’s lesser numbers, this Queen is easier to spot? I bet if we looked hard enough (or even at all), we would also find King Wasps (the shouter, the liar, the frat boy, the I-Banker Masters of the Universe, etc.) at least as often as we find Queen Bees. The simple fact, in my mind at least, is that it is difficult if not impossible to believe that you can be what you…

The simple fact, in my mind at least, is that it is difficult if not impossible to believe that you can be what you cannot see. If there’s no one like you “up there,” it’s not likely you’ll get there without either a patron saint sponsoring you or getting your hands dirty with a little workplace foul play.

Disrupt The Default To Achieve Gender Parity
1 Million For Work Flexibility
The notion of “disruption”—which is the dynamic reimagining of any one thing—got me thinking: Catalyst has been actively researching, consulting about, and stimulating dialogue around working women for over 50 years. We’ve seen positive change, but we are still nowhere near parity. Is “best-of-the-worst” really our goal? Or must the whole system be disrupted in order to see real, meaningful change?

Speaking Engagement: The Benefit of Diversity is Diversity (2015)
-
The upside of diversity is almost limitless. Yet too few agencies understand how to embrace diversity in all its fullness. Come see what happens when you put women on a traditionally male account (HINT: Cannes Lions) and when you create an agency culture where people's unique hobbies, passions and talents are uncovered (not just who they appear to be at face value).
