Another OEM Entering the Class-8 EV Market Hyundai Motor Unveils Level 4 Autonomous Fuel Cell Electric Truck Nolan Beilstein 5/22/2024 Hyundai Motor Company and autonomous driving software developer Plus announced the updated XCIENT Fuel Cell Truck — now characterized as a Level 4 autonomous Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell electric truck. Adding Self-Driving to the Truck The collaboration between Hyundai and Plus integrates Plus’ Level 4 SuperDrive autonomous driving system into Hyundai Motor’s fuel cell electric truck. XCIENT Fuel Cell Truck Is the First Class 8 to Do This The XCIENT Fuel Cell Truck is currently undergoing autonomous driving tests in the United States. According to a Hyundai Motor press release, it is the first Class 8 fuel cell electric truck to be tested at Level 4 self-driving. Since its debut in 2020, Hyundai Motor’s XCIENT Fuel Cell Truck has been in commercial operations across eight countries. Last year, the company revealed the XCIENT Fuel Cell tractor, a Class 8 6×4 fuel cell electric model with a pair of 90-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cell systems and a 350-kilowatt electric motor, which provides a range of more than 450 miles.  The Quest for Safe, Sustainable Transportation Plus is deploying its SuperDrive solution across Europe, Australia, and the U.S. The system features various sensors, including cameras, radar, and LiDAR, for planning, perception, self-driving, and prediction.  Plus co-founder and COO Shawn Kerrigan praised the collaboration, highlighting its goal to develop safer and more sustainable transportation solutions.

Another OEM in the Class 8 EV Business Officials announced that Hexagon Purus, a Norwegian maker of zero-emission vehicle systems, plans to sell a line of electric heavy-duty trucks through a Toyota subsidiary in the U.S. The Hexagon-Hino Distribution Agreement Hexagon Purus, a developer of mobility solutions for both hydrogen fuel and battery-electric systems, has signed a distribution agreement with Hino Motors’ U.S. division. Under the pact, Hexagon will manufacture up to 10,000 heavy trucks by 2030, which will be distributed through qualifying Hino dealerships in the U.S. Deal Could Be Worth $2 Billion Hexagon officials said the vehicles would be based on the Toyota brand’s truck chassis, then upgraded with Hexagon zero-emission systems, including batteries, power and auxiliary modules, and software. The new agreement replaces a 2022 deal for battery packs between the two companies. It could be worth $2 billion over the course of its lifetime, officials estimated. *Production to Begin in 2024 Production of the new trucks is slated to begin late this year. Ascend Elements is able to take all types of lithium-ion batteries (LIB) and transform the critical elements into new cathode materials that rival or exceed the performance of cathode materials made with virgin metals. Their proprietary method efficiently separates valuable materials such as cobalt sulfate, manganese sulfate, nickel sulfate, lithium carbonate, and graphite. These can either be sold as commodities or further processed into customer-specified cathodes, which are among the most costly and carbon-intensive components in lithium-ion batteries. Their process results in 50% lower costs and up to 90% lower carbon emissions. Additionally, a recent study revealed that battery cells constructed using the Ascent Elements upcycled cathode material demonstrated a cycle life over 50% longer than cells made using traditional methods and had an 88% increase in power capacity. General Motors has applied to patent a technology that takes driver-monitoring to a new level. The automaker outlined a system that analyzes the driver's behavior by reading data sent by onboard sensors — and can have the car take over if it detects unsafe behavior. Filed in November 2022, and published in May 2024, the patent describes a "vehicle occupant mental well-being assessment and counter-measure deployment" system. The technology was developed by a General Motors subsidiary named GM Global Technology Operations, and it aims to intervene when it detects that stress — regardless of where it comes from — can affect the driver's ability to operate the car. #sensors #autonomousvehicle #control https://lnkd.in/e4XycG3R

BREAKING: Big Bloomberg News scoop, President Biden is about to hit China with punishing tariffs to counter the EV import and FDI threat they represent to the North American auto sector. Now 🇨🇦 needs to do something meaningful on this acute and growing issue. Automotive Parts Manufacturers'​ Association (APMA) lit the fuse on this in a focused mission to meet officials and implore action in Washington, DC last November. Our speaking out on the Chinese threat - import and supplier investment tactics in Mexico to access US and Canada - started a public debate in DC that has led us here. On November 6 last year Steven Chase wrote in the The Globe and Mail: “Mr. Volpe said elected officials and governments, both in Canada and the U.S., must “wake up to the speed at which the Chinese are altering their competitive strategy. The export controls on graphite and the influx of displacing Chinese automotive investments are a clear signal that we must collaborate more closely to safeguard our industry.” Meanwhile in 🇨🇦, unlike in the US we still give a federal purchase incentive on Chinese made cars and we are forcing the EV sales mandate timelines at a rate that drives us into the hands of Chinese auto and EV battery makers. After we raised the threat to officials in DC at the White House, Treasury, Economy and Energy, Greg Layson wrote in Automotive News Canada: “He wasn’t exactly Paul Rivere on a mythical midnight run, warning of a British invasion, but Flavio Volpe was in Washington, DC this week to deliver a warning of his own: The Chinese are coming - for the North American auto industry.” This is measurable advocacy. We will always stand up for 🇨🇦 interests, and we’ll go anywhere and take on anyone who threatens them. That is why the APMA is one the most influential automotive associations in the world and one of the most successful industry organizations in 🇨🇦. Some new EV enthusiast clubs disguised as 🇨🇦 stakeholder groups will say that “any EV is a good purchase”. They don’t care where they come from or if they threaten your job. I do. We are in the fight, not watching it and criticizing the punches.
