PNC And Howard University Are Shaping The Future Of Black Entrepreneurship The collaboration supports scholarships, grant programs, and educational initiatives specifically designed to empower aspiring Black entrepreneurs. Contributing over $206 billion annually to the economy and supporting 3.56 million American jobs, companies like Calendly, SheaMoisture, and Esusu Financial are among over 100 Black-owned startups that have achieved unicorn status with over $1 billion-plus valuations. Multi-million-dollar acquisitions like Compass Diversified’s purchase of The Honey Pot underscore the growing economic power of Black-owned companies. While headlines celebrate these successes—as they should—they remain exceptions rather than the norm. Despite the surge in Black entrepreneurship, significant funding gaps persist, with approximately 71% of Black-owned startups denied VC funding compared to only 12% of their white-owned counterparts. Assessing success through the lens of oppressive historical context can skew perspective. Surpassing benchmarks set under discriminatory conditions is a flawed measure demanding broader evaluation. In comparison, only 1% of Black business owners are able to obtain loans during their founding year, compared to 7% of white business owners. Federal Reserve data shows that loan applications from Black business owners are rejected at more than twice the rate of their white peers, and even when they do secure loans, they face higher interest rates averaging 7.8% compared to 6.4% for their white counterparts. These funding disparities paint a troubling picture beneath the surface of celebrated Black business growth.

Juneteenth is a very important holiday for celebration and reflection! Though only recognized federally a few years ago, it had been celebrated by African-Americans for over 150 years. Please take time to reflect on how racial bias against African-Americans still takes place in the workplace today. This could be things like: automatically doubting work, not considering us for promotions, or thinking we’re ‘angry’ when we’re only being direct. This could look like: an all-white leadership team, African American team members often staying quiet during meetings, or the workplace not acknowledging this holiday. #juneteenth #happyjuneteenth #racialbias

Earlier this week, I had the tremendous honor of being a speaker at the Diversitech Conference in Philly. I was truly inspired by our panel on “Agile in Action - Aligning Product, Program, and Scrum Master Roles for Success”. Each member on the panel was so dope; the energy on the stage immediately shifted the atmosphere in the room! One of the major gems from our panel was when our moderator Sandra Mosquera Vargas, MBA asked us “what is the difference between your roles?”. As a Project Manager, Jeffrey Gyan described his role as “The Conductor” arranging all the players & overcoming blockers to make sure the project is delivered on time, in scope, and within budget. As a Scrum Master, Mashia Tate, MBA, CSM, SSM described her role as “The Traffic Controller”, making sure all the pieces of the project or puzzle flow seamlessly across each phase to execution. As a Sr. Product Manager at McDonald's, I described my role as “The Point Guard”, setting the direction(mission/vision) for the product, and driving the product roadmap(Fast Break) by passing the ball to my UX designer, Scrum Master, Project Manager, and ultimately to my Engineers to score the ball(deliver features that delight customers while delivering business value). When we shared this approach during the panel, I could literally see “light bulbs” go off in the mind of each person in the audience! I’m so grateful to have been in the room, and I want to give a big shoutout to Shannon Morales and the entire Tribaja.co team for creating a space to connect, share ideas & experiences, and most importantly show others how to break into the tech industry. P.S. - Allen Iverson is my favorite basketball player…it was my first time in Philly so I had to represent for A.I…pound for pound the greatest basketball player of all time! ….. Let’s GOOOO!! …. #careers #productmanagement #agile #jobsearch #technology #networking #thoughtleadership #McDonalds #AllenIverson

🚀 Blast from the Past: Phish's "2001" & A Milestone in Tech Implementation 🚀 As Phish jams out in their timeless tune "2001," a song that captures a futuristic vibe, I'm taken back to a pivotal moment in my own journey—my very first IFS implementation in the same year. Just like the dynamic shifts in Phish's "2001," that year marked a transformative phase for the company I was with. We flipped the switch, turning plans into reality by implementing IFS, setting the stage for immense growth and efficiency. This tune mirrors the journey of an ERP implementation, navigating through its highs and lows, each phase driving us toward ultimate success. 🔗 Phish - 2001 Live @ The Met Join me in revisiting this iconic track and a key turning point in my career. Whether you're a music enthusiast or a tech professional, there's a rhythm and a beat to how projects unfold and how music flows. They say it's all about who you know – and my unconventional #CareerJourney from Human Services at Northeastern University to Toast proves it! 🤝 My network opened doors, leading me from nonprofit healthcare at Fenway Health & IHI (where I learned about quality improvement, #equity, and empathetic #leadership) to the #tech world. It's been a winding road, 🔀 but it led me to discover that my purpose is to empower others to thrive. ✨ Now, I leverage my organizational skills and emotional intelligence at Toast, where I get to lead work prioritization, optimize our Education team's agile processes, improve our capacity planning and forecasting, and align our work with business needs to ensure maximum impact & value. It's not the linear path I envisioned, but it's incredibly fulfilling and gives me the #WorkLifeBalance I was looking for. ⚖ In today's job market, I'm committed to giving back by using my #network to help others. After all, it's about people and timing, and even a small connection can make a big difference. 🌱 If you see a role at Toast that speaks to you, feel free to use my referral link: https://lnkd.in/g_WRNnBh It's a small way I can #PayItForward and help you on your journey. 🧡 I'm curious – have YOU ever taken an unexpected #career turn? How did your network play a role in opening up new opportunities? #WomenInTech #RepresentationMatters

PATRICE W. LINDO THE CAREER NOMAD
My Interview with Ebony McMorris at the 2024 Essence Festival of Culture! 🌟 I had the incredible opportunity to sit down with the amazing Ebony McMorris at the Global Black Economic Forum during this year’s ESSENCE Festival, and it was an enlightening conversation about #technology and #transformation in the #workplace. We delved into the importance of feeling comfortable in your career while maintaining a healthy balance between loving what you do and opening yourself up to more spontaneity and enjoyment. It’s all about finding that sweet spot where you can thrive professionally and personally. Here are some key takeaways from our discussion: 1. Embrace Multitasking: In the rapidly evolving tech landscape, balancing multiple responsibilities is crucial. Effective multitasking can lead to increased productivity and a better work-life balance. 2. Be Nomadic in Your Career: Whether it’s leveraging remote work opportunities, integrating more travel into your routine, or exploring global work environments, a flexible approach can reignite your passion for your career. Technology makes it easier than ever to work from anywhere. 3. Inject Adventure: The tech industry thrives on innovation and daring ideas. Trying something different or bold in your field can spark creativity and lead to groundbreaking developments. 4. Tie Up Loose Ends: As we juggle various tasks and responsibilities, staying organized and ensuring everything is neatly tied up is essential, especially when preparing for new ventures or travel. This is particularly important in tech, where project timelines and deliverables are critical. 5. Reignite the Spark: Sometimes, it’s not about leaving your current job but about approaching your career differently. Embracing new technologies and methodologies can bring a renewed sense of excitement and fulfillment. In my role, I’ve been focusing on integrating cutting-edge technology to drive transformation in the workplace. From implementing #AI solutions to enhance productivity, to championing remote work policies that promote work-life balance, my goal is to create an environment where innovation and flexibility thrive. This approach not only boosts efficiency but also empowers employees to achieve their best work while enjoying their personal lives. It was a powerful conversation that left me inspired and motivated to continue pushing boundaries and seeking new opportunities. Thank you, Ebony and AURN - American Urban Radio Networks for such an engaging interview! What steps are you taking to balance your career and personal life while keeping the spark alive? We did it again…and at a significant increase! Atlanta again has the highest rate of Black-owned businesses in the U.S. 8.8% of businesses in Atlanta are Black-owned, a jump from 7.4% in 2020 but still the highest among the 50 metros with the most Black-owned businesses. Among those metros, Atlanta has the second-highest number of Black-owned businesses and the fifth-highest Black population rate. Following Atlanta with the next highest rate of Black-owned businesses are Washington, D.C. (7.6%), and Memphis, Tenn., and Augusta, Ga. (tied at 6.7%). #BlackMecca #HotLanta Byna Elliott Frederick Royall III Marvin Clark Naima Tyson Shea Taylor Nichole Harmon , MBA Kanayo Oweazim Joey Womack Robert Hines Xamayliz G. I am happy to announce a new chatbot on my website entitled "Ask Ed." Once you access the website (capacity-building.com), you will notice my name, "Ed," in italics in the bottom right corner. Just click on that, and you can ask your question. I've spent over 25 years creating and compiling this information. Thanks to Matt Ruck and his team at xop.ai, I am now able to share some of it with you. My purpose in doing this was multifold: to add value to my existing clients and colleagues, inspire others to do the same, and reach an audience whom I may never meet or advise. I hope anyone using it will derive some value from the experience. I would also appreciate your feedback on the results of your queries to help make the tool smarter. Here is a quick example: What separates great leaders from everyone else? Changed to "What are the five traits that indicate a leader’s potential to stand out?" "According to the document [1], five traits have emerged as indicative of a leader’s potential to separate themselves from the pack. These traits include: Vision: Great leaders have a clear vision of where they want to go and can effectively communicate and inspire others to share that vision. Resilience: They possess the ability to bounce back from setbacks and challenges, demonstrating perseverance and determination. Emotional intelligence: Great leaders are self-aware and have a high level of emotional intelligence, allowing them to understand and manage their own emotions and effectively navigate relationships with others. Adaptability: They are flexible and open to change, able to adjust their strategies and approaches as needed to meet evolving circumstances. Empathy: Great leaders genuinely care about the people they work with and recognize the unique potential in each individual, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. These traits, among others, set great leaders apart from everyone else [1]." www.capacity-building.com #leadershipdevelopment #capacitybuildingsolutions #leadershipadvice #businesssuccess #chatbot #leadershiplessonslearned #CEOadvice #coachingtool #executivecoaching #EdRobinson #VistageChair #businessresearch #businessresource #leadershipresource #chatbotforbusinessknowledge #businessknowledge #businesscontent #knowledgerepository #AskEd #businesstool #leadership #smallbusinesstips #smallbusiness #managementdevlopment

The old adage is that it’s all about who you know… but is that really true? As I reflect on the year so far, I realize I have devoted a lot of time with my teams and mentees focused on the why and the how of cultivating and growing their personal networks and spheres of influence. For me, people are at the center of everything, especially when you work in a larger company (like Amazon, which is huge). It’s not easy, in fact most folks earlier in their careers admit that they’re scared off by the prospect of reaching out to someone they don’t know to ask for 15-30m of time for a conversation to learn more about their role. So they procrastinate it. Delay at your peril! My goal has been to instill a sense of importance and urgency to the practice, and the more you do it, the better you will get. I have used my experience as a model, sharing that I used to be scared as well, that it’s natural. But if you don’t push through that fear (of rejection, of embarrassment), then you’ll never reap the rewards of new relationships and opportunities. But the second half of the equation is that you must both prepare AND follow up. If you’re nervous, it means you need to prepare MORE for a conversation - do your research, write down your questions / topics to discuss, and always have an ask! (which could be other useful connections). And always respect your new connection by following up with a thoughtful thank-you note. It may sound old school, but I can tell you I only remember those who have followed up and put it in the effort to stay connected. And that’s what it’s all about. What are your tips for forging new connections?

Toni Townes-Whitley: A Transformational Leader in Beast Mode at NVSBC Witnessing Toni Townes-Whitley at NVSBC was nothing short of remarkable. Her leadership and vision in the marketplace are unparalleled. The nuggets and insights she shared were invaluable to small business partners. As a CEO, I look forward to more of her fireside chats and mentorship from afar, learning from her extensive experience with Fortune 500 companies. Toni captivated the room with her powerful presence and insightful gems. Her 456 framework and growth strategy are setting new standards, with a focus on: • Growth Vectors: Enterprise IT, embedding software, and creating mission innovation solutions. • Long Game Company: Here to stay, exploring the next generation of space – the frontier of the future. • Citizen Experience: Modern and innovative, reshaping operational AI. Toni’s leadership exemplifies what makes SAIC different, especially in cybersecurity. We are proud to collaborate with SAIC as a small business and look forward to scaling up in the cyber domain, leveraging their transformational approach. Toni’s commitment to embracing veteran small businesses is truly inspiring. Toni was spot on about Rita (Marguerite) Brooks. In my opinion, Rita is one of the best large prime small business advocates, consistently supporting the veteran community with intention and dedication. Thank you, Toni, for gracing National Veteran Small Business Coalition - NVSBC with your presence.
