𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐦 Criticism—both negative and constructive—has been a constant companion throughout my career journey. As product managers, we often face critiques from every direction: users, executive management, peers, and our teams. It can feel personal and challenging, evoking memories of past reflections. So, how do we navigate these critiques while maintaining our focus on meeting product user needs? Here are some practices to consider. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 : We're programmed to react immediately to feedback, often becoming defensive or emotional. By controlling our reactions, we can prevent situations from escalating and foster better stakeholder relationships. This step is tough but requires constant self-reflection and discipline. 𝐀𝐬𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 : Not all feedback comes with negative intentions. Seeking clarification helps us understand the underlying ideas behind the criticism. This approach can lead to valuable conversations and potential roadmaps for improvement. Crucially, it helps us discern whether the critique is about the product itself. 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 : Being open-minded and actively listening to criticism is essential. By listening without judgment and focusing on solutions, we can improve processes, enhance communication, and create better products. Implementing product critique workshops can also provide unbiased opinions on product design and usability. Navigating criticism is about growth—both personal and professional. This perspective on Product Trios, when it comes to making decisions, speaks to the power of Strengths partnership. When I managed Product and Delivery teams, I knew the strengths of every person I managed, and they knew each other's strengths (through an assessment and my coaching). I cannot begin to explain what a game changer this was - from our sprint planning discussions, working through blockers, and determining the best solution to choose. We would seek out the strengths we knew we had in our team to provide input, and weigh-in. Each person knew when it was their time to speak up, and voice their opinion - simply because we all knew our own superpowers, and those of our team members. Our innovation, collaboration, productivity and successful delivery was all positively impacted!

In product management careers, ignore these truths at your own peril. Operating at our fullest capacity means confronting these truths and making necessary changes. Here’s what I’ve learned from coaching over a thousand product managers: 1. Resolve to Solve Your Problems: Many product managers are stuck in a cycle of working long hours, feeling unappreciated, and watching peers get promoted. They often aren’t ready to solve their problems. You must decide to make changes, no matter what. 2. Market Your Work: Believing that hard work alone will get you noticed is a fallacy. Your work must be marketed. People don’t get promoted for their achievements; they get promoted for the achievements others recognize. 3. Think Ahead: Your career is like a chess game. Always think several steps ahead. Focus on long-term goals and take on projects that showcase your skills. 4. Sow the Seeds: Don’t give up too quickly. Advocate for solutions and make the necessary effort, even if initial reactions are adverse. Persistence is key. 5. Take Shortcuts: Career shortcuts exist. Invest in learning them from someone experienced. Coaches can accelerate your progress and help you navigate your career path efficiently. 6. Fuel Your Journey: Performance psychology is as crucial as strategy. Even the best plans won’t get you far without the right mindset. 7. Become the Reward: The real reward is the person you become. How do you make sure your product strategy is effective? Too many companies have a glacier decision velocity, bound to annual planning. These companies complain they “aren’t moving fast enough” and “competition is winning”. Here are four questions to help you evaluate where you can improve. 1. Do you have regular feedback loops? 2. Are you evaluating your key hypothesis? 3. Are your teams placing small bets to reduce risk and increase learning? 4. Are you constantly course correcting? A high decision velocity is crucial to leading a successful product business in tech. I am working on a program to help product leaders make faster and confident strategic decisions. Try This in Your Next OKR Cycle: the Full Goal Lifecycle Every OKR book and training will tell you the key results should be about outcomes (measurable changes in business, user, or system behavior) and for good reason — our goals should be about what we wish to achieve rather than what we plan to do. And yet most companies fail to make outcomes-based OKRs work. The key reasons is that outcome goals require answering some important questions: what are the key challenges and opportunities? what are users' relevant jobs. pains and gains? what are competitors doing about it? what are some valid ideas? Without answering these questions it's hard to know how to create the change, how long will it take, and if it is at all possible. So to make outcome goals work, we need to start with two the important phases: Research and Discovery. Companies that skip these phases and jump directly to Delivery set themselves for failure. There's also a fourth phase: Monitoring. That too is often overlooked. Companies that understand the full goal lifecycle, and are able to manage it, achieve outcomes much more effectively — a massive competitive advantage. “Customer-obsessed” and “human-centered” get thrown around a lot these days, especially in the SaaS world.
