Hawaii settled a lawsuit with youth climate activists which will commit the state to make major steps toward decarbonizing its transportation systems. Filed in 2022, the lawsuit was Navahine v. Hawai’i Department of Transportation. In it, various youth plaintiffs accused Hawaii of violating their state constitutional right to a “clean and healthful environment” by allowing (and incentivizing) its transportation systems to act as “a major and increasing contributor” to GHG emissions. The settlement, signed last Thursday, commits the state to: -Reducing emissions in Hawaii within a year, and setting five-year interim emission reduction targets with a 2045 net-zero goal; -increase use of zero-carbon fuels for ground, air and marine transportation; and -Building out public transport and pathways for pedestrians and cyclists. 🎉 Green Light for CA SB 308!! ✅ California's Carbon Dioxide Removal Market Development Act, #SB308, has officially passed out of the Agriculture committee and Resource Committee with an 8:3 vote and is now moving to the Appropriations Committee. 👏 Senator Josh Becker highlighted that SB308 will be the first of its kind in the nation, requiring 7 million tons of carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) by 2030. This translates to about 2.8 million tons of biochar needing to be produced and sequestered within the next 5 years. 😀 Biochar stands out as the most shovel-ready CDR solution to date. Recently, we read an article in the LA Times about the challenges with the Goldspotted Oak Borer (GSOB), an insect invading thousands of trees in Southern California. The content was largely focused on the struggles communities faced: risking the loss of large numbers of indigenous trees due to the pests vs. the environmental impact of wide-scale topical spraying of pesticides. While the article briefly mentioned tree injection as an option, the benefits were not accurately presented, so we thought we’d correct some of the missing information regarding the use of tree injections for Goldspotted Oak Borer: • The only harm from tree injection is to the insect that bores and feeds on the tree • The treatment only circulates inside the tree and does not affect the surrounding air or soil. Therefore, the product:  Is not harmful to humans or pets living near the trees  Is not harmful to bees, nor does it impact pollination  Does not impact surrounding plants  Can use the smallest possible dose of pesticide per tree • It’s nearly 100% effective Unfortunately, organic methods are not always effective with invasive species like GSOB, but thanks to the technology in plant healthcare today, we are not limited to the binary options of spraying versus losing trees. In fact, tree injection has saved millions of trees nationwide over the past 10 years and is currently used in cities like Chicago and Boston to defend against other invasive insects. #GoldspottedOakBorer #GSOB #Arboriculture #TreeInjections #ArborjetEcologel

💸🚫 Outrageous! Businesses are already burdened with cap and trade fees for environmental protection. Now, SB 1497 wants to pile on additional fees stifling economic growth. The legislature needs to understand that these extra costs will inevitably trickle down to consumers - adding to the already hefty gas prices from existing taxes and regulation fees. The latest proposed revision of the #CABudget has made clear that #CALeg and Governor Newsom continue to deprioritize racial, economic, and climate equity despite their stated commitments to a more fair and just California. We are especially frustrated to, again, see devastating cuts to key climate equity programs. These vital programs, including Transformative Climate Communities (TCC) and Regional Climate Collaboratives (RCC), are critical to combatting the worst impacts of the climate crisis in low-income communities and communities of color and building their resilience in the face of future disasters. We’re urging Governor Newsom and the California Legislature to transition #TCC and #RCC into the state’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF), and especially in the most volatile budget deficits, maintain their commitment to environmental justice and equity for all Californians.
