Lisa Crispin reminds us that the purpose of metrics and measurement is to gauge improvement. Team improvement. The misuse of metrics is actually a leading indicator of a dysfunctional culture.

Developer downtime: don’t overwork your devs. It’s memorial weekend and I’m lazily sitting on my porch. My kids keep coming in and out of the house, but get stuck because the sliding door keeps coming off the rails and won’t open. Well, since I’ve got nothing else scheduled for the afternoon I investigate the issue. Turns out sliding doors have a bunch of adjustment screws. I adjust them till the door slides smooth. Left in the broken state my kids learned to hit top left side of the door before opening it. Bringing this back to work, I know customer success teams that have a cheat sheet of these maneuvers. Give devs space to observe, we naturally fix these issues.

Right on time for Data and AI Summit, here's some great news: Predictive Optimization is now generally available. This feature takes all the burden of table maintenance off your back. And it does it more efficiently and timely, saving you time (doing manual labor), and money (wasted storage that isn't VACUUMed, and queries that are needlessly slow). Get your code into production. One of my pet peeves is when a team develops new functionality QA for months before pushing to production…then are surprised when they try to push to production and (1) 4233 things break and (2) their business counterparts are underwhelmed with the result. My teams generally push to production every sprint - each user story must go into production Developing a muscle for regularly and frequently pushing changes as an IT/data organization forces you to: 1️⃣ Automate: common processes, security checks, quality 2️⃣ Containerize: everything should be reproducible including environments and packages 3️⃣ Decouple: if your deployment breaks it should not affect other teams/deployments 4️⃣ Simplify: deploy less at a time, also reducing risk

Instead of asking, 'Which diagramming tool should we use for our system architecture?', reframe the question to address the core issue. For example: 'We need to ship functional software on schedule. How can we easily visualize and access up-to-date system architecture information?' You'll quickly see that static diagramming tools won't cut it for modern, complex systems. You need a dynamic tool that embraces complexity, supports evolving architectures, and integrates seamlessly with your system design process. https://lnkd.in/eYmBUVEV
