A sad day in the U.S. Solar industry. Unfortunately, signs of these problems have been around for years and it has taken this long for the business realities and economics to run their course. Leeward Renewable Energy, alongside California's PG&E, has established a pivotal long-term agreement ensuring resource adequacy for a substantial PV co-located Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Arizona. This 15-year commitment encompasses the energy generated by the Sierra Pinta BESS project in Yuma County, Arizona, boasting a capacity of 112.5MW/450MWh and slated to commence construction in September, aiming for commercial operation in the first half of 2025. Resource Adequacy (RA) agreements, such as this, are vital mechanisms within the CAISO market, allowing resources to commit their capacity to meet demand requirements, bolstering reliability without reliance on centralized Capacity Market (CM) auctions. Arizona's landscape is witnessing a surge in grid-scale BESS initiatives, driven by long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), tolling agreements, and RA commitments. Notably, Plus Power secured tax equity for a 360MWh project in May, followed by Longroad Energy's commencement of an 855MWh system in March. Additionally, a 1GWh project came online during the same month, claiming the title of the state's largest endeavor in energy storage. This week's reason for hope (via climate stories in the news) is California's newest major clean energy benchmark. This week, California exceeded 100% of energy demand with renewables over a record 30 days. Electrek's article on the achievement details how California had more supply than demand for 30 of the past 38 days (as of April 14), and produced excess clean energy for 0.25-6 hours per day on each day. At EEI 2024 Jensen Huang talked about a new business model for electric utilities where the grid becomes a marketplace that dynamically connects new supply and demand (Pedro Pizarro got to teach Jensen the term "DERMS"). These new supply-demand load profiles will have an unknown impact on equipment performance including premature failure. Asset traceability will be increasingly important for monitoring, understanding, and predicting equipment performance resulting from these load profile changes.

Yet another bad sign in ERCOT (TX) of potential reliability problems ahead. Yesterday evening 4/16 on a beautiful spring day, power prices jumped to over $4,000/MWh on an 80 degree spring day when solar went from a peak of 14,000 MW to 0 MW and wind went from 23,000 MW in the morning to 5,000 MW in the evening with ERCOT asking for conservation of power throughout the day. So what saved the day? Same as usual natural gas and coal generation went from a combined 16,000 MW in the morning to 43,000 MW to offset the collapse of solar and wind. Said another way, solar and wind went from 50% of the generation for much of the day to 10% in just a few hours while natural gas and coal went from 40% early in the day to over 80% to make up the difference. Many continue to advocate adding intermittent solar and wind generation can replace reliable and dispatchable natural gas and coal generation. The grid will get more unreliable and wild price swing will be unacceptable for most customers. We can much better than this for all U.S. citizens and its economy that relies on reliable power in all hours, not just when the wind blows and the sun shines.
