You’re a public speaker. How can you avoid awkward microphone moments?
Sometimes at events or gigs, we don't always have the full say at what type of mic we'd utilize for the speaking engagement. So I personally find it helpful to incorporate the unique characteristics of the given mic type into my speaking style in that moment. Notice how different mic setups communicate the overall speaking persona differently. For instance, if a podium mic, I tend to channel the energy of scholarliness, sophistication, and even solemnness; if a handheld, I think of myself as warmer and more thoughtful through body language, more of a traditional storyteller role you'd see on TV (your stage MCs, singers, etc); for lapel mics, which are my personal favorites, they are great when it comes to pulling the audience closer.
