Effective, confident grantmaking can be complicated work. I’ve seen it. One example I love to point to when working with clients facing this challenge is the work I did with The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. A lot can be learned from this case study. Infrastructure and clean energy transition projects have a history of bypassing — and often harming — low-income, tribal, and rural communities. Both the energy and the profits typically flow outward to urban areas and wealthy shareholders, while the communities where these projects are located see minimal jobs or economic growth. Philanthropy is in a unique position to disrupt this trend, bridging the gap between federal dollars and local impact. In a new piece for Inside Philanthropy, Matt Horton of Milken Institute and Accelerator for America and I outline the current state of affairs in green energy investments, and suggest ways for philanthropy to address common challenges and steer the green energy transition toward justice and equity. Specifically, we recommend that philanthropy focus on three areas: 1) Facilitating community input and benefits agreements so that projects reflect the rights and interests of these communities. 2) Funding green jobs and workforce development programs to ensure that the millions of new jobs spurred by investments are high quality and broadly accessible. 3) Advising state and local officials on how to use federal dollars for maximum community benefit. I hope you’ll read the article and let me know what you think! #GreenEnergy #Philanthropy #Equity https://lnkd.in/g5CGtsrr

Associations role in addressing climate change 🔍 "The reason people associate in the first place is to solve big problems." – reflections from my recent Mission: Impact podcast podcast episode with Shelly Cumbie Alcorn Alcorn and Elizabeth Weaver Engel on associations' pivotal roles in addressing climate change. Every industry, whether directly or indirectly, is affected by by climate change and the environmental shifts it is creating. In facing something as monumental as climate change, it's easy to focus on the extremes — either leaving everything to global entities like the UN or taking individual measures like installing solar panels. However, the real work for associations lies in that critical middle ground where practical, collective action can drive significant change. This is where our expertise and collaborative efforts can truly make a difference We are positioned to implement practical, scalable solutions that can influence entire industries and professions. This involves not only advocacy and education but also setting standards and leading by example in sustainability practices. How is your association or nonprofit leveraging its influence for sustainable impact?

When we work together on behalf of people and the planet, we can do big things. Thank you to Michael Kavate at Inside Philanthropy for capturing this story of the philanthropic efforts that contributed to the sea change for climate and equity investments embodied in the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund's $27 billion in awards announced recently. McKnight has supported many groups to explore and advance financing for green infrastructure and clean energy across the Midwest, including through the creation with the Minnesota Department of Commerce of Minnesota's first-ever green bank (Minnesota Climate Innovation Finance Authority), which is already deploying resources across our state to power our clean energy future. Thanks to former McKnight Midwest Climate & Energy program director, Aimee Witteman (now at Rewiring America), for sharing her insights about the gaps that Minnesota's green bank is now poised to fill and what it took to get to this moment. We're now working hard to prepare our Midwest communities and grantee partners for the arrival of funds, building the capacity of community-based organizations to secure project financing. Why? Because we think the Midwest can be the heartland of the nation's swift and equitable transition to a climate-friendly, clean energy economy. Read the story: https://lnkd.in/gmKHhDZd Thanks to all of our peers and partners who were also instrumental in getting us to this moment, including but not limited to: Coalition for Green Capital, RMI, Native CDFI Network, Inc., William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, The Climate & Clean Energy Equity Fund, MacArthur Foundation, U.S. Energy Foundation, ClimateWorks Foundation, Ford Foundation, The Kresge Foundation, Invest in Our Future, The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, Northwest Area Foundation, RWJF #climatesolutions #climatefinance #climatejustice

As The Rockefeller Foundation celebrates its 111th anniversary this month, I have found myself thinking quite a bit about risk and reward. I believe that it is more important than ever for The Rockefeller Foundation and others in philanthropy to rededicate ourselves to making big bets. In this new piece, I examine what we can learn from the risks and rewards that have defined humanity’s past and discuss how our team is working to do our part to address the most serious threat facing humanity today, climate change. https://lnkd.in/enh-sz4w

At CEI, we are a part of the "helping industry" this piece outlines. We encourage and support our philanthropic partners to apply the principles of trust-based philanthropy, and we know that change can only happen if it's happening at every level—including ours. That's why our mission isn't just to serve philanthropy. Our mission is to partner with them in ways that advance racial and other forms of equity and create channels for historically and structurally excluded people to participate in and influence decisions about the interventions and systems affecting their lives. Our work will never serve to uphold an inequitable and unfair status quo. https://lnkd.in/gZ-9w2iC

What an inspiring evening Tuesday exploring the intersections of social entrepreneurship and #climate action with CARE partners and friends at the beautiful San Francisco office of ServiceNow. Global humanitarian need has never been greater – and climate change largely explains a five-fold increase in natural disasters in the past 50 years. Climate change also drives conflict and displacement, and exacerbates inequalities by, for example, disproportionately impacting women and girls. A rising generation of social entrepreneurs are addressing today’s development challenges, including climate change, yet even the most promising solutions struggle to scale to the communities where they’re most needed. Our CARE10X program, part of our Climate Solution Accelerator, partners with social enterprises to meet needs in these “last mile” communities that are underserved by the market. Our partnership with KickStart International is bringing their irrigation tools to women smallholder farmers across Sub-Saharan Africa – CEO & Co-founder Martin Fisher demonstrated how the irrigation pump works at our gathering in San Francisco. By 2030 CARE plans to double our 10X portfolio and benefit 10 million households. With Shuchi Rana of Service Now, CARE's Christabell Makokha, and Martin Fisher of KickStart. https://ow.ly/4TIo50RogYS

Interesting solution and the right use of the DEI efforts and resources: "Diversity should be a spur to looking far and wide for talent, no matter someone’s gender, race or sexual orientation. A firm convinced that it is overlooking the best candidates from a particular demographic cohort, for example, could choose to lengthen its shortlists to include more from that group. That will not mechanically create workforces that mirror the population, but it can maximise talent and diversity of thought. Quotas, by contrast, have the perverse effect of narrowing the search by excluding talent..." https://lnkd.in/eTAbmJ9i

This article is not wrong. But it is infuriating to read. Many, many, many people have been saying this for a long time. Vu Le comes to mind. The Trust Based Philanthropy Project comes to mind. Community Centric Fundraising comes to mind. And on, and on, and on… I am glad these authors and those around them are now understanding that "...Poverty, for instance, is the direct result of government policy and corporate behavior shaped by a history of structural racism that no nonprofit program can redress"...but COME ON. Exhausted folx from communities that have been systemically left behind have been saying this for YEARS. Building enough wealth that you are able to give it away requires a system where some win, and some don't. That is why can't program your way out of poverty. That is also way those who win cannot possibly have insight into how to fix the conditions created by the systems or the systems themselves (if they even want to). So now that its in a fancy publication (which I get, some people only get their news this way, that's fine) has written this long article, can we PLEASE start funding (with significant multi-year, unrestricted donations) organizations that are doing this very work? If you want some in St. Louis, WEPOWER and Forward Through Ferguson are really great places to start. #ssir #philanthropy #communitycentricfundraising #trustbasedphilanthropy #nonprofits #systemschange
