"The brand views itself as powering how you live, but consumers view it as invisible." - Adweek article on Verizon Ouch. I wanted Verizon to fix itself, I really did, despite having major problems with them myself as a provider I quit. To hear that a major telecom had realized it needed better work gave me hope. I've always thought, since my days working on Sprint, AT&T, BellSouth and the ill-fated Nokia, that it was a creatively rich area being centered on our human needs for connectedness and communication. So I was rooting for Verizon. Then I saw the work. "Can you hear me now?" at a time when people barely make calls, when texting has become the norm and phones are used more for browsing social media and using apps than actually communicating? Optimistic to say the least. That line lasted until 2011 and was pretty tired by then. But having to go back 13 years to find something you owned kind of sums up the problem. And the updated extensions linked only by the word "now" tagged on, well, that's just limp. In short, if this work is supposed to better communicate how Verizon "powers how we live" it fails. The verbal argument is never made and the visual one relies on tired soft-drink style vignettes. (I actually have trouble believing I just used that word in a world where, we are told, storytelling is now key.) The new logo designs are not bad...although I'm sure they cost a lot more than most people would imagine. Not bad. But not great. So far, the new ads are as generic as the ones that came before them. Another huge advertising opportunity wasted. Time will tell if I am right.

Yesterday, the FCC fined T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon a combined $200 million for selling access to location data to third parties without customer consent.   First, that's not nearly a large enough fine, given the size of the transgression and the companies in question. I'm not surprised, but I am appalled. Here's the most damning part: "Each carrier sold access to its customers’ location information to 'aggregators,' who then resold access to such information to third-party location-based service providers. In doing so, each carrier attempted to offload its obligations to obtain customer consent onto downstream recipients of location information, which in many instances meant that no valid customer consent was obtained. This initial failure was compounded when, after becoming aware that their safeguards were ineffective, the carriers continued to sell access to location information without taking reasonable measures to protect it from unauthorized access." Second, even though it's barely a slap on the wrist if the FCC is going to fine those three, they'll fine anyone. Be careful out there. Third, the FCC does news releases as PDF/docx/txt, no live .html that I can find at least, which is so random that it's interesting.

The price of the assets will go down but the number of assets deployed will be greater so it will be a positive for agencies.  🔆 Media planning and buying. This will be revolutionized as media planners and buyers are replaced with algorithms.   🔆 Knowledge transfer. The ability for people to share information inside companies is going to be revolutionized by AI, creating flatter organizational models with the ability for all teams to upskill and act quicker. 🔆 LLM will eventually give way to SLM (small language models) with device level compute taking off - why? A few months ago, during a brand team brainstorm in our ATL office, we came up with a concept for a new piece of thought leadership content: The Science of Loyalty. The goal was to uncover the underlying principles that drive loyal behaviors and provide marketers with tactical guidance and consumer behavioral insights that help them encourage repeat purchases from their customers. For the past few months, working with our partner Canvas8, I have been honored to lead the creation on this piece of work. And today I am so excited to share it with you all! The content includes: 🧪🧠 The Science of Loyalty: A report based on interviews with Richard Shotton, Bri Williams, Cyrus McCandless, and Line-Ariel (L.A) Bretous that features "The Loyalty Wheel", a proprietary framework made up of 4 neurobiological principles—reward, memory, emotion, and social interaction. 📩 The Strategic Loyalty Playbook: A guide that expands on the scientific principles of loyalty with tactical approaches that can help marketers improve their loyalty strategies. We leveraged a rigorous mixed methodology research approach, involving a literature review, a consumer quantitative survey, and interviews with Kath Pay, Adam Ferrier, Denise Yohn, and Eddie Yoon. It includes our "Commitment Spectrum" and explores prompts marketers can implement to drive customer motivation and ability. 🌐 🛍 Four "Shopping Mindset" deep dives into the UK 🇬🇧, US 🇺🇸, Canada 🇨🇦 and Australia 🇦🇺: Each infographic features findings of our global survey of 4,000 consumers (1,000 in each region). The stats uncover what drives shoppers in each market to make repeat purchases and provides insights into how marketers can engage their audience and encourage loyalty behavior from consumers in each country.
