"A new report by InfluenceMap using the Carbon Majors database quantifies the contribution of the world’s largest oil, gas, coal, and cement producers to global carbon emissions, which are the primary driver of climate change. This report shows that the majority of global CO2 emissions produced since the Paris Agreement can be traced to a small group of high emitters who are failing to slow production". The value creation is real. The risk of course is that if CEOs *expect* such quick returns on investment, it is because the are primarily approving projects where that calculation can easily be made. That will include the energy transition and a lot of efficiencies but not necessarily the more complex and transformative initiatives we sorely need. This has been my (personal) experience. But the more optimistic side of me thinks it means more CEOs have taken the time to look at things like climate risk or results of reporting exercises illuminating supply chains and realized there are real, sometimes major, business risks and opportunities that need to be part of the core business strategy, and are making investments based on this. Limits to growth though? Really don’t think that’s on the table here 🙃 Thoughts most appreciated!

#greenjobs The U.S. has made historic investments in clean energy, including $62 billion through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. However, research shows that the country’s workforce might not yet have the technical skills to meet the increasing demand for clean energy. A recent report released by #LinkedIn found that job postings for “green jobs” such as solar installer or wind turbine technician are growing nearly twice as fast as the number of individuals with the skills to fit them. Some experts are concerned that this “green skills gap” could slow the clean energy transition and prevent workers from accessing jobs, reports the Wall Street Journal. Partnering with the North America’s Building Trades Union’s TradesFutures program, the #AmericanClimateCorps at least partially addresses this by providing every member access to a free, pre-apprenticeship trades readiness program to help individuals build practical and marketable skills when their position ends.

There is an ongoing debate about the effectiveness of linking climate goals to CEO pay. The report Pay for Climate Performance, by As You Sow, analyzed how the 100 largest U.S. companies linked executive compensation to GHG emissions reduction. Financial incentives fell far short of the emission reductions needed to meet science-based decarbonization goals. I am excited to co-author these new reports released today on GHG accounting and environmental disclosures and how they can be improved to better measure progress toward electricity grid decarbonization. Special thanks to co-authors: Roger Ballentine, Ben Hobbs, Armond Cohen, Toby Ferenczi, Jeanette Pablo, and Iain Kaplan. A new report series from Clean Air Task Force examines how existing greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting rules can be improved to enable companies to more accurately report emissions from purchased supply serving their electricity use and better assess and report the real-world emissions impacts from their actions. Thousands of companies have set voluntary clean energy and/or emissions reduction goals. Almost universally, these companies use established rules for reporting emissions arising indirectly from electricity use, as detailed in the GHG Protocol’s Corporate Standard and Scope 2 Guidance. But oftentimes current accounting measures do not accurately capture a company’s continued reliance on unabated fossil fuels for their electricity supply. They also don’t paint a complete picture of the climate impact of their procurement decisions. This report series finds that better GHG accounting and disclosures could fundamentally change how large electricity buyers are incentivized and recognized for buying clean energy and greatly increase their role in decarbonizing the electricity grid. https://lnkd.in/ekpwWVB8
