Starting a custom electronics project can be challenging for many businesses. I step in and collaborate with their team to provide clarity on the development and production process using a structured framework, eliminating uncertainties. One of our clients sought our assistance in estimating the production costs for their electronics before committing to development. For an accurate estimate, we need detailed information about the PCB size, fabrication specifications, unique components, placements, and component costs. Since this was a new product idea, the information was limited. The client only mentioned that "the PCB can't be larger than one inch by 2 inches," leaving the rest for us to figure out. 👍 We encountered similar situations many times before, which led us to develop an efficient framework. We start by thoroughly understanding the product's operational needs through a lot of questioning. Then, we select the key components, focusing on areas that significantly impact production costs. Later, we consult our manufacturing quoting team to assess various scenarios, highlighting any uncertainties. Finally, we create a project roadmap that outlines the recommended development path and when to address these uncertainties. This results in a solid plan that our customers use to make informed decisions. The image attached to this post showcases a circuit board we manufactured for a product that is now sold in all Bass Pro Shops. This project began with a production estimate exercise and is a testament to our work. Initially, our estimate exceeded their expectations. We guided them in refining the product specifications until our estimate aligned with their budget. This strategic approach not only saved them from venturing far down the wrong path but also inspired them with the potential of their project. You might be surprised to hear me say that smart manufacturing alone is not enough. Here’s what I mean by that. I thought Kevin Johnson said it perfectly when I interviewed him recently. “Everyone is doing smart manufacturing. So, we’ve got to create unique competitive advantage.” Smart manufacturing and everything it means – Industry 4.0, innovation, transformation, digitization, reinventing the way we make things. Every single company, every single region is doing some variation of the very same things. It’s become table stakes. To stand out and break away from the pack, we have to focus on the strategic areas where Northeast Ohio has a proven edge, things we are – or can become – famous for. This includes EVs, polymers, additive manufacturing, precision production, and water quality/safety. We have to place big bets in these areas and come together as a region to attract major investments and massive projects. I have read many business books over the years and have some great take-aways. I was asked recently why would experts place their experience/framework in a book while at the same time forming a business to implement what they have shared openly? It is common to have downloadable worksheets in addition to the book(s) for a business operating systems. Many of the concepts have been presented in an easy to digest manner - so why have an implementor or coach that costs money to facilitate this? I have attended facilitated sessions and leveraged coaches myself and I have found that insights on how these ideas might be effectively leveraged surfaces because of their experience/participation in the process. In addition, they act as facilitator allowing the business leaders to fully participate. There is one more item that seems very important for these ideas to be actionable which is the ongoing accountability and framework that stays in place with the help of that outside resource. I have witnessed brilliant plans die a lingering death without follow-through and intentional framework to implement and keep relevant. If you have experience with facilitators and coaches around business systems and concepts in which there was a value add I did not mention I would be interested in hearing about this.
