Headline not matching the accompanying story I’m afraid. Jon Moramarco calls the data “muddy” at best. My own impressions are that many wholesalers have cut their post-pandemic inventories by reducing SKU counts. This by extension disadvantages the smaller producers who consume as much staff time as the larger ones and often sell products with less predictable sales trajectories. There are advantages to marginalising smaller producers both in staff time and capital, but large producers have the power to dictate their wholesaler’s inventory levels sometimes under the threat of pulling their lines with potentially devastating consequences. Wholesaler inventory levels are not necessarily an indicator of the health of the market or consumer behavior.

According to my May 11 poll, brewers consider dissolved oxygen to be the most difficult quality spec to control. Here's some ideas based on my experience, applicable to most canning lines at small and medium breweries. 1) Set up your operator for success by consistently presenting beer with the same level of "activity", or readiness to foam. This activity metric is determined by temperature and carbonation, and I base it upon an industry standard of 35 F and 2.50 CO2 volumes. Activity increases by 1 for every 1 F, or every .07 CO2 volumes, from that standard. The formula is therefore: Activity = (CO2-2.50)*15-(35-Fahrenheit) You may find an activity target that works for your brewery, but aiming for an activity of 0.0 is a great starting place. Use activity to determine your brite tank temperature or as a way to prepare your operator for the incoming conditions. Graph activity over time to evaluate your beer condition execution. I find that beers with lower activity (down to -2) allow for faster canning (especially when you want to use a post-fill delay), and also lead to a lower "weight split", a metric determined by the difference between your heaviest and lightest can in a set (bonus: I've found that a higher tank pressure also reduces the weight split, by reducing breakout in the canning manifold). 2) Study the impact of can weight, raise delay, and post-fill delay on your canning DOs. My charts show that lower can weights (allowing for more foam) result in better DOs. I've seen major benefits to the DO and quality of foam when the raise delay is as short as possible, so that beer is dispensed just beneath the surface of the liquid. Post-fill delays allow a foam cap to protect the beer before the can ever moves, and are a great solution for creating extra foam in less active beers. Graph it all! 3) Now it's time to develop your operator's visual intuition. They need to see the can fill and the DO results simultaneously. Use google slides to create a video diary of your canning, presented next to the table of your DOs, weights, and can line settings. You will have a firm example of insufficient foam caps, the effect of a missed lid, or the effect of beer streaming out of a can and "breaking the seal". Build a slideshow of ideal settings for canning each brand, accompanied by a visual representation. These SOPs will be cemented into your company's present and future. Appreciated the opportunity to share the Dr. Praeger's journey and how our mission to pioneer food to increase veggie consumption aligns perfectly with Earth Day. What continues to surprise me is how the industry conflates a PB meat analog product with an item that is veggie-forward. As I explained during the interview...Both play a very important role in the health of the planet, but veggie-forward foods are, without exception, one of the best ways to eat healthy. I often contemplate why PB milk is 20%+ of the category while Meat and Cheese is less than 4% of their respective categories. One possible reason is products like oat milk (my go-to choice is Oatly) tastes nothing like dairy milk, but still is a great substitute from an occasion standpoint. I think we can make a similar connection to why Dr. Praeger's California Burger is gaining share in the category. It is a great replacement for a hamburger despite the fact that it doesn't taste anything like it - and most importantly, is helping drive veggie consumption. The Adult Non-Alc space is fascinating. As it evolves I think we’ll see some stratification between the functional ingredient beverages and the alcoholic beverage analogs with no functional ingredients.
