Many foundries are familiar with the concept of water cooling to manage the thermal conditions in a permanent mold as the casting cools. However, cooling is only one tool in the engineers tool box that can be used to change solidification patterns when designing the mold. Anderson Global has extensive experience in designing and building aluminum wheels for many of the automotive tier one wheel suppliers. Just by looking at the wheels on cars driving on the roads today you can see that those wheel castings have many complex thin and thick sections located in close proximity. These thick/thin sections present significant challenges for the permanent mold designer trying to optimize casting quality and casting cycle time. By using a SHELL INSERT, the Anderson Global Mold designers have the ability to retain heat in very specific locations in the casting. By balancing the cooling applied to some sections and then retaining heat in other sections with shell inserts, our designers are able to optimize the casting conditions. The thin shell inserts with a hollowed-out area behind the thin wall help retain heat by having a lower thermal mass contacting the casting as it cools. Additional heat retention can be added by insulating the hollowed-out space behind the thin wall. Of course, this low-pressure wheel mold technology is applicable to a wide variety of cast components that have challenging sectional variation. We are all measured by something. Where possible, try to keep the hole depth to diameter ratio at 10:1 or less, to streamline CNC processing.
