Last year in California ACS CAN: ● Led the effort to remove co-pay for colorectal cancer screenings to increase screening rates in California and nationally. ● Helped expand biomarker testing coverage. ● Engaged 91 residents in VIVE’s advocacy activities in Imperial and Riverside counties. ● Helped end the sale of flavored tobacco. ● Engaged 59 cities in campaigns to strengthen local tobacco prevention and control policies. Congratulations to our own Cynthia Gyamfi-Bannerman, MD, MS, chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at UC San Diego School of Medicine who recently published research in JAMA which shows that steroids are safe and effective for late preterm infants. The research demonstrates that infants of pregnant individuals exposed to antenatal betamethasone at 34 to 36 weeks of gestation show no adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes compared to those unexposed. UC San Diego Health is recognized as a 2023-2024 High Performing Hospital for Maternity Care, which is the highest award a hospital can earn by U.S. News & World Report for obstetric and infant care. To be ranked as High Performing in Maternity Care, hospitals must meet high standards in caring for patients with uncomplicated pregnancies, such as low cesarean section rates, low newborn complication rates, offering transparency on racial and ethnic disparities, and other measures. Thanks to funding from the California Health Care Foundation, two new programs are being developed to expose possibilities and opportunities for applicants to pharmacy school in California’s central San Joaquin Valley. The University of California, Merced - University of California, San Francisco BS to PharmD Program is designed to remove structural barriers with an expedited program for UC Merced students, while the PharmTech-to-PharmD program takes a proactive step toward upskilling pharmacy technicians. Both programs aim to reduce the health care disparities of pharmacy deserts by cultivating interest in—and opening multiple pathways for—pharmacy careers among underserved communities. https://lnkd.in/gZW6SP5n

In their new Forefront article, Howard K. Koh and Michael C. Fiore of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the UW School of Medicine and Public Health argue that, by implementing and enforcing the Tobacco-Free Generation (TFG) policy, community leaders can steadily increase the proportion of the population that is tobacco-free. "Thanks to an unprecedented Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) ruling this March, the town of Brookline is allowed to ban tobacco sales to anyone born after 2000—a decision with national and global ramifications. In 2021, Brookline became the first jurisdiction in the world to implement Tobacco-Free Generation (TFG-- sometimes called Nicotine-Free Generation, NFG), a simple yet profound concept to stop the greatest preventable public health threat in its tracks. The ban prohibits sales to anyone born after a fixed date; these individuals can never be sold any type of tobacco in the town of Brookline. Allen Institute and Seattle Children’s to Study Inflammatory Bowel Disorder in Search of Cure https://lnkd.in/gQ7Gbftt The Allen Institute for Immunology, a division of the Seattle-based Allen Institute, is teaming with Seattle Children’s Research Institute to launch a study aimed at understanding the origins of inflammatory bowel disorder (IBD), the organizations announced Monday. The new initiative, called the Seattle Spatial Transcriptomic Research in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Evaluation (STRIDE) study, will be a first-of-its-kind pediatric study. Researchers will use state-of-the-art technology to understand how genes and other molecules behave in individual cells of patients who haven’t been treated yet. IBD — which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis — affects 3 million people in the United States and 30% of all IBD diagnoses are in patients 20 years and younger. Seattle Children’s said the incidence of IBD is around 10.9 per 100,000 children and growing over recent years. 🚨New article in The Lancet Public Health🚨 Center on Gender Equity and Health at UC San Diego's Vedavati P. Patwardhan and co-authors from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) released an article: "Differences across the lifespan between females and males in the top 20 causes of disease burden globally: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021." In it, the authors examine health differences between females and males across 20 major causes of #disease burden globally as well as by world regions, covering age ranges from adolescence to older ages. 💡 🔎 What we learned: Overall, health loss is higher in males, particularly driven by premature death. UC San Diego Health is the first hospital system in the region to offer a new breakthrough treatment for metastatic melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer.    The personalized treatment is a cellular therapy derived from tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) and is the first solid tumor therapy on the market approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).    “The ability to provide cellular therapy holds the potential for remission for some patients with melanoma and provides a new tool to the growing number of options for patients whose cancer cells have spread from where they started to other parts of the body,” said Gregory Daniels, MD, PhD, professor of medicine in the Department of Medicine at University of California San Diego School of Medicine and medical oncologist at UC San Diego Health.   As a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, UC San Diego Health - Moores Cancer Center is among the top 4% of approximately 1,500 cancer centers in the United States, and one of only 56 Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation. CLOSE CONTACTS AND EXPOSURES If you have no symptoms: There is nothing you need to do or change.  You may have sufficient antibodies to protect yourself and others.     If you experience any symptoms, you should Put on a mask, leave an indoor work area, contact your supervisor, and go home.     COVID-19 CASES AND POSITIVE TESTS For COVID-19 cases with symptoms, the “infectious period” is defined as a minimum of 24 hours from the day of symptom onset:   If you test positive to COVID-19, you may now return to work: after 24 hours have passed with no fever, without the use of fever-reducing medications, AND Your symptoms are mild and improving, AND You MUST wear a face covering for 10 days from the start of symptoms or if no symptoms are present from the date of your first positive COVID -19 test. For COVID-19 cases with no symptoms, there is no infectious period for the purpose of isolation or exclusion. If symptoms develop, the criteria above will apply.   Symptoms are defined as: fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, or diarrhea, unless a licensed health care professional determines the person's symptoms were caused by a known condition other than COVID-19
