The Looming Physician Shortage and Our Pre-med Program at UC Santa Cruz https://lnkd.in/gHxs8CkX The medical profession has always held a special place in my heart. The individuals who choose this path do so out of a profound commitment to serving humanity. The majority are driven by an innate calling to heal and safeguard lives. Embarking on a medical career isn't a decision made in passing. It calls for absolute dedication, significant sacrifices, and an unwavering focus on others' well-being. In medicine, there's the unparalleled power to not just save lives, but to shine a light in someone's darkest times. Think of the elation of witnessing a patient's recovery, knowing you played a part in it. Few vocations offer such profound rewards. Beyond life-saving, medicine is about alleviating distress. As a healthcare provider, you'll stand with those battling physical and emotional torment. Your compassion will be their balm. Your willingness to lend an ear, to offer comfort, and to truly understand can bring about a monumental shift in their lives. The path to a medical degree is challenging. It's marked by academic rigor, extended hospital hours, and tests of resilience. However, every hurdle you overcome strengthens you as a healer. On the horizon is a significant physician shortage. Data from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) projects a shortage of up to 124,000 physicians in the U.S. by 2034. However, there's a beacon of hope - the bipartisan Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act of 2023. This pivotal legislation aims to alleviate the physician gap by increasing Medicare-supported medical residency positions by 14,000 over a span of seven years. It addresses a long-standing bottleneck in the medical profession's journey. We're thrilled to announce that the University of California, Santa Cruz is gearing up to launch a pre-med program. Our goal is clear: adopt best-in-class methodologies and gauge our success by the rate of student admissions into medical school. Creating a healthcare environment where everyone feels valued, respected and heard requires a shift in how we approach healthcare training and education. The “Walk with Me” class at Stanford University School of Medicine is the kind of transformative approach we need. The class is a student-patient-caregiver partnership experience that offers early, authentic engagement with patients and their families. It underscores a fundamental principle: medicine is not just about treating conditions, but about understanding and caring for the individuals living with those conditions. As #FortWorth's Medical Innovation District in Near Southside, Inc. continues to grow, the new Anne Burnett Marion School of Medicine at Texas Christian University will play an essential role in building robust workforce pipelines to help combat the state's shortage of physicians – developing new talent that further establishes the region as a hub for #healthcare and life sciences. TCU administrators expect the newly accredited school to create an estimated 31,200 jobs and have an annual economic impact of $4 billion by 2030. We know there is a real, pressing need for more healthcare providers, particularly in the primary care space. So, when I think about the future of medical education, I’m focused on how we can build upon the foundation of what we already have – hands-on, multi-disciplinary approaches to get students excited about careers in health and medicine. #UDel #UDCHS #UDHealth

In February, Albert Einstein College of Medicine was the latest program to become tuition free, thanks to a $1 billion gift from Dr. Ruth Gottesman. This gift followed similar programs at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine, among others. Our research shows, however, that tuition-free medical school does NOT help address the shortage of primary care physicians or send graduates to underserved areas. A significant proportion of graduates from these institutions still gravitate towards higher-paying specialties and established health systems in metropolitan areas. If we want to address the primary care physician shortage and improve healthcare access in underserved areas we need more targeted strategies. This means implementing loan forgiveness programs tied to primary care or underserved practices, reserving tuition-free benefits for students pursuing specific specialties or practice locations, advocating for policy changes to bridge pay differentials between specialties, and incorporating early exposure to primary care in medical education. We are excited to share big news about #MillionsMissing 2024 - our ongoing campaign to Teach ME and Treat ME by educating medical providers across our nation’s hospital systems and medical schools about myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME, ME/CFS). Throughout the spring, summer and fall, #MEAction teams are hosting 13 medical education events to encourage medical providers to take the Mayo Clinic Proceedings Continuing Medical Education (CME) course on ME/CFS, and presenting medical education flashcards on ME/CFS, Long COVID, and other infection-associated chronic illnesses to medical schools. By engaging with hospital systems and medical schools directly, and providing the tools they need, we’re fostering ME clinical care across the country and beyond. Meanwhile, #MEAction is pursuing opportunities to collaborate with researchers more deeply at Georgetown, Emory, Brown, Mayo and University of Montreal. Researchers at these five institutions have submitted Letters of Intent to signify their formal interest in collaborating with #MEAction in our ongoing #TeachMETreatME initiative. These major institutions have an enormous influence on our healthcare system, and we’re thrilled at this opportunity to move the needle on ME healthcare.
