My farm bill prediction... We don't see one finalized. Not because of politics and not because of anything having to do with hemp, but because of H5N1. Historically, we have handled viral infection in livestock by culling. However, cows aren't chickens. They are expensive (and take longer to mature). Dairy is a major component in food assistance and nutritional programs. The way the virus is spreading, the potential for mutation and identification of it in finished products may mean there is a real possibility that culling of cows (maybe other livestock) is implemented and if that is the case then you can just take a match to the farm bill... Time will tell, but the timing of this all has the ability to be a perfect storm. https://lnkd.in/gQQdXtiU

182 and counting. Two scientists found an unusual cannabinoid in hemp for the first time. The study is a preprint, but the two authors used a selective method of separating compounds called flash chromatography. Doing so allegedly prevented the loss of water during analysis. Dr. E. Michael Thurman and Imma Ferrer found a form of CBD with a double-bond missing from the methylene group between the eighth and ninth position. The compound instead contains an additional hydroxyl (OH) group, which means this is a hydrated variant of CBD. [Remember: Hydration ≠ Hydrogenation] The authors identified the compound as epiCBD-hydrate. Although, it’s difficult to tell how the compound would affect humans without biological tests. CBD, as a molecule, contains two major portions: The limonene half and the olivetol piece. The ‘limonene half’ of CBD is responsible for quinone formation and the eventual purple color formation. This newly identified form of hydrated CBD has an olivetol piece and an a-terpineol half. The team used flash chromatography to find the compound in hemp cultivars from Boulder, Colorado. They employed liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time- of-flight mass spectrometry (LC/Q-TOF-MS) to analyze the exact mass of the compound. The authors also used tandem mass spectrometry and NMR to identify epiannabidiol-hydrate in hemp. As far I understand - normal procedures induce enough heat to break the bond holding onto the +OH group, which leaves behind a hydrogen atom with an extra electron (H-). | [OH + H = H2O] The freed electron moves into the molecule. The position of the rearranged ion essentially destroys the original cannabinoid (epiCBD-hydrate) and forms a different isomer of CBD. The paper noted that they found other isomers and COOH analogues in various hemp products. Did hydration simply occur in the experiment, given the use of water in the mobile phase? Or does this preprint document the authentic discovery of a hydrated cannabinoid from multiple hemp samples? Kratom deaths? Kratom the only thing in their system? Its hard to tell COD because of synthetic cannabiboids. They don’t show up in drug tests. Dispelling a #pharmageddon myth - the US government is going to/has patented your weed. Been diving down some of the overgrow and icmag forum rabbit holes. It has been affecting my mental health (primarily because there are the same unfounded fears being parroted over thousands of posts) so I need to take a break. But - wanted to address this oft cited argument: the government owns patents on cannabinoids, ergo they are trying to take your weed away through IP. Here it is. It is a nothingburger. They did nothing with it. As you can see it expired in 2019. HHS did however use it as evidence that Cannabis holds medical value to support their rescheduling request. Does it highlight the hypocrisy of the government both saying there was medical value but it was still scheduled 1? Absolutely Does it support any of the conspiracy theories? Not at all. PS I just ordered the Joe Pietri book "The 15-Ounce Pound: Big Pharma's Plan to Patent Pot". I really didn't want to give this dude my money but I figured I should at least give it a read to understand the way this group thinks.

I've had a lot of people ask me recently about analytical testing to identify intoxicating hemp derived products. Since I'm not an expert in analytical chemistry I always refer them to Westley Cruces and Colorado Chromatography. (Disclaimer I'm not in any way affiliated, I just respect their scientific contributions and mission) Here's a new example of why. First author Monica Pittiglio and colleagues developed a new, quick, cheap HPLC method to resolve d8 and d9 THC. For those unaware, d8THC is not found above trace levels in any cannabis plant, and quantifiable levels indicate synthetic conversion of CBD into intoxicating THC isomers. They then use this method to show, perhaps unsurprisingly, that hemp derived d8THC samples have very non-compliant (average 5+%) of d9 THC. On the flip side, I see this method being useful for identifying hemp-derived products (containing d8 THC) that have infiltrated the supposedly seed-to-sale tracked state markets like here in Colorado. #BetterCannabisThroughScience Full article link in comments.

Mysterious Burnt Seeds Found In Roman Pot May Be Cannabis. Archaeologists have uncovered a Roman pot containing a set of mysterious seeds that may be from the cannabis plant. The pot was unearthed during excavations conducted at the site of an energy-generating facility between Saltholme Nature Reserve and the village of Cowpen Bewley in the district of Stockton-on-Tees, northeastern England. The site preserves remains from Britain's Roman period—which lasted from A.D. 43 to A.D. 410—including evidence of settlement and agricultural activity. The excavations, conducted by Green Man Archaeology, took place during the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020-2021, but the backlog of post-dig laboratory work is only just coming to an end. The Roman pot found at a site in northern England that contains mysterious seeds. Testing is underway to determine whether or not the seeds come from the cannabis plant. GREEN MAN ARCHAEOLOGY This lab work involves sorting and cleaning artifacts that have been found, as well as sending finds to specialists for assessment. Among the most intriguing finds was a battered and burnt beaker identified as having originated from the valley of the River Nene, which runs through eastern England. Inside, the vessel contained a number of seeds that resembled those of the cannabis plant. The beaker was not washed along with the other pottery sherds found at the site and was immediately sent to a lab to see if the seeds could be positively identified as cannabis. Pottery finds are routinely washed before they are sent for analysis, but one of our staff had the presence of mind to notice something was different about the soil filling this pot, left it in situ and sent it for analysis," Jon Welsh with Green Man Archaeology told Newsweek. Cannabis was known to the ancient Romans and evidence suggests it was used medicinally and for industrial purposes, such as making hemp ropes. (Hemp is a type of cannabis plant that has long been cultivated for a wide variety of industrial uses. Hemp and the drug marijuana come from the same species, Cannabis sativa. But hemp has much lower levels of the compound THC, which is the psychoactive substance responsible for the "high" effect of marijuana.) As the Roman Empire expanded, products made from the cannabis plant spread along with it. For example, the Romans are thought to be responsible for introducing cannabis to the British Isles. Here's a new angle for regulators to consider! I never thought that rolling papers could or should be regulated but if it's a consumer product, especially one being used by medical cannabis patients, it just makes sense to ensure public health and safety. It's odd, IMO, that the manufacturers haven't seen this coming and made the necessary modifications BEFORE being told to by a law. Personally, I taste something odd in papers. It irritates my mouth. Makes me want to spit it out. Could be that I am sensitive to metals? It's an interesting study.
