Within the “terahertz technology gap” (100 GHz - 30 THz) lies a vast reserve of bandwidth poised for development. “The carrier frequency of 300 GHz is 150 times larger than two gigahertz where the current cellular network is today,” explains Research Scientist James Greenberg, a program manager at IMRA. “So, take the number of devices we currently have and imagine multiplying that by a factor of 150. That's the biggest driver in going into a higher frequency.” However, the development of user-friendly technologies capable of generating, manipulating, and detecting radiation within these frequency bands is not only technically challenging but also hindered by the limitations of available THz-capable components. 📡 #LPWAN Fairy Tale: Sending Data via Pigeon with #MQTT, #CoAP, or #LwM2M? The myth of MQTT and energy consumption. MQTT isn't suitable for #NBIoT, #LTEM, and #5G #NTN. MQTT is based on #TCP, designed for wired connections. Weaknesses of MQTT: - TCP requires acknowledgement during connection setup, payload, and at the end of communication, with a timeout. - MQTT also requires acknowledgement during connection setup, payload, and at the end of communication, with a timeout. 🔍 Advantages of CoAP over MQTT: - UDP doesn't require acknowledgement during connection setup, payload, and at the end of communication, with no timeout. - CoAP doesn't need acknowledgement during connection setup, payload, and at the end of communication. A timeout can be freely chosen. CoAP can operate without acknowledgement. 🐦 NB-IoT and our pigeons can't guarantee acknowledgement before TCP timeout. NB-IoT and LTE-M Release Assistance Indication (#RAI) don't offer acknowledgement reception. RAI has the lowest energy consumption with NB-IoT, LTE-M, and 5G NTN. Even the MQTT timeout can't be met by pigeons. The estimated flight time based on an average speed of 60 km/h is 8 hours and 20 minutes to our island, 500 km away from the mainland. No chance with MQTT. ⏳ NB-IoT and LTE-M have a latency of 10 seconds with high Link Budget or Maximum Coupling Loss (MCL). 5G NTN has a 40-second latency, with occasional packet loss. A moving object may send a packet but not receive it later due to poor connection, a challenge for MQTT but less so for CoAP. 🛰️ Writing only about CoAP is incorrect. CoAP can use UDP, SMS, NB-IoT Non IP, MQTT, or even pigeons. NFC is used to read packets at the pigeon loft entrance. For the return channel, we can use mobile, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet. 🤔 I hope that with CoAP via pigeon, it's clear why MQTT is unsuitable for wireless technology. Robot taxis are encountering ongoing challenges, as highlighted in a recent article by Bloomberg. The piece provides sobering examples of recent setbacks, emphasizing the hurdles that companies like Waymo, Cruise, and Zoox are facing as they strive to advance in the #robotaxi race. Bloomberg's newsletter, aptly titled "Getting out of neutral," offers insightful perspectives on the current state of autonomous vehicle development. In my graduate course, we delve deep into the technical obstacles and core principles of autonomy governing autonomous vehicles from an AI perspective. Rather than merely focusing on control mechanisms, we explore the nuanced realm of AI-driven decision-making and navigation in these intricate systems. I'd like to extend a special shoutout to my students Jan D. and Sidd Argawal, who have recently joined the ranks of industry leaders. Jan, who pursued his PhD, went on to join Waymo, while Sidd, who completed his MS, embarked on a journey with Ford. The question is not "𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 5 years from now?". The question is "𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗜 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 5 years from now?". The SWE community is split in two camps right now with the techno-skeptics being the majority and also very loud about their 𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴. Influencers with big followings have had quite a few viral posts reassuring everyone that nothing will happen and we're all safe. 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. In reality, most folks are worried, nobody really knows what's going to happen and none of us has a crystal ball. Promoting absolute views and giving people false emotional comfort is very dangerous, because if you're wrong they won't know what hit them.  The big 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 in front of change and realizing too late that you got left behind. Technology advances constantly and AI is just a new tool. It's moving way too fast for anyone to make any accurate prediction.  When someone is 100% confident in their opinion about the future, alarm bells should be ringing loudly 🔔 : - Is their expertise and understanding deep or superficial? - Do they have any incentive in promoting a specific view? Some people are simply in denial, some want to sell you on some course, reasons can vary. As for my own 𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯, I find it very hard to imagine a scenario where this has absolutely no impact on the SWE's job and nothing will change. I also find it very hard to imagine a scenario in which SWEs get completely displaced from the market, at least for the next 5-10 years. 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 happen roughly once every decade:  1990's - the PC 2000's - the Internet 2010's - the cloud 2020's - ? We are at the beginning of the current cycle where the technology is still nascent, rough and a bit messy. Just because we currently have 56k broadband it doesn't mean that video streaming will never be possible 😉 Change occurs as the technology matures and adoption accelerates exponentially once it reaches escape velocity. It's easy to dismiss it in the beginning and very hard to catch up if you have an 𝘰𝘩, 𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘧𝘵 moment too late. SWEs will likely still be in demand during the decade, but it's also likely that their job could become different from how we know it today. And how many of them will the world need is anyone's 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘀. We all need to ask ourselves what skills will distinguish us in the future and double down on those early on. I don't have the solution and I am not selling you the course that will save you. 𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘦, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦'𝘴 𝘢 𝘣𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘪𝘵'𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘵, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘰𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘺 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘴. Post credit to Laurentiu Petrea

Elon has become quite sane and calm these days. In his last earnings call and following telephone conference, he delivered some consistent strategy looking at the new Model 2 release in 2025. Cost down is of course, but his primal interest in FSD accelerated investment on his own AI, pouring huge amounts of H100 into, with getting approval from Li Qiang to gather driving data in China. Now BEV business is getting stagnant due to retarding prevalence of charging stations and TOYOTA's misleading of PHEV sales, neglecting efficiency of carbon offset. If he gets through the issue of FSD, he will take another measure and focus on weathering the problem of scarce electricity for a whole new EV world.
