Samsung recently showcased groundbreaking advancements in semiconductor technology at the Samsung Foundry Forum (SFF) 2024 in San Jose, California. Under the theme “Empowering the AI Revolution,” Samsung revealed its reinforced process technology roadmap, introducing the cutting-edge 2nm (SF2Z) and 4nm (SF4U) nodes, alongside an integrated Samsung AI Solutions platform. "At a time when numerous technologies are evolving around AI, the key to its implementation lies in high-performance, low-power semiconductors," said Dr. Siyoung Choi, President and Head of Foundry Business at Samsung Electronics. The SF2Z process node, featuring optimized backside power delivery network (BSPDN) technology, promises significant enhancements in power, performance, and area (PPA), and is set for mass production in 2027. The SF4U node, scheduled for mass production in 2025, offers high-value 4nm variant improvements. Samsung also confirmed that preparations for the 1.4nm node are on track for 2027 mass production. Emphasizing its GAA technology, Samsung's advancements in gate-all-around structures are pivotal for AI applications, with mass production of its second-generation 3nm process (SF3) commencing later this year. Moreover, Samsung's turnkey AI platform integrates strengths from its Foundry, Memory, and Advanced Package (AVP) businesses, streamlining supply chain management and reducing time to market. Last week’s DAC showcased exciting announcements from startups that are revolutionizing semiconductor design however these rising stars overshadowed a major update from an industry stalwart - Alphawave Semi - whose news is poised to accelerate the proliferation of chiplets and give rise to a “chiplet marketplace”. Alphawave Semi announced a breakthrough with the tapeout of the industry's first off-the-shelf, multi-protocol I/O connectivity chiplet. This technology can seamlessly integrate into larger SoCs or multi-chip modules, giving designers increased flexibility and more connectivity options for different applications. Reflecting on the Chiplet Summit this past spring, I remember listening to Tony Chan Carusone, Alphawave’s CTO, as he passionately described the significance of chiplets and how Alphawave will foster a more open and democratic design ecosystem. Now, just one quarter later, his team has launched a technology that brings this vision much closer to becoming a reality. Adding to their momentum, Alphawave also announced an expanded partnership with Samsung Foundry to advance the industry's progression toward cutting-edge semiconductor nodes, crucial for the evolution of advanced compute. Samsung’s roadmap in sub-4nm technologies includes FinFET and Gate-All-Around, which are designed to maximize performance in the post-Moore era. Initially targeted for data centers and HPC, these innovations may trickle down to low-cost, AI-enabled edge devices, putting the transformative power of AI into the hands of billions of people worldwide. This news follows Alphawave’s early June announcement of their new partnership with Arm, aimed at unlocking the potential of processors. Alphawave will give Arm access to their robust portfolio of connectivity solutions and silicon IP, which Arm will integrate into their proven portfolio of compute cores. At a time when AI technology is accelerating at breakneck speed, many companies are searching for ways to boost compute performance and address the challenge of moving data between compute and memory more efficiently. While multiple startups offer unique solutions, many customers want battle-tested technology to avoid the risk of investing in solutions that may become obsolete by the time they reach tapeout. Alphawave has developed vital solutions and in doing so, has increased design flexibility, built bridges to new process technologies, and shortened the path to market. “Connectors” are often the catalysts of innovation and Alphwave’s is a testament to that word. I’m encouraged by what I’ve seen from Alphawave and strongly believe they stand at the forefront of an emerging chiplet marketplace. The DC charging system market will reach a value of $23.7 billion by 2029 💡 DC #EVcharging represents a relatively new business opportunity for power #electronics players. This market will be sustainable since an increasing number of #charging points are deployed year after year, and soon the issue of replacement will emerge. AC chargers will remain as long as onboard Chargers (OBCs) exist by default in cars; OBCs will remain as long as DC infrastructure is not strongly consolidated ‘everywhere’ (likely in 10-15 years). The total EV DC charging system market will reach $23 billion by 2029. In 2023, the largest market segment in $M was chargers between 50 and 150 kW. Nevertheless, the demand for high-power chargers is rapidly growing, with a strong demand for power over 150kW. In 2029, the largest market value, $9.2 billion, will be associated with the very high-power (150 kW ≤ x ≤ 350 kW) charger. The adoption of a 1,000 V charger will simplify the choice for EV owners to ‘plug and go’ regardless of battery pack voltage (400V or 800V). OEMs with EVs based on 800 V battery approach would not struggle anymore how to adapt their batteries to 500V chargers. This will lead to volume, weight, and cost reduction on vehicle level. The semiconductor and hardware industries are becoming more global and in the past twelve months, I’ve seen evidence of this firsthand by having probably a dozen conversations with foreign startup leaders who wanted to expand their design centers in North America, with a particular emphasis on Canada. Part of this shift is the economics of capital. North America has one of the richest investment capital markets and is home to some of the most prolific startup venture capital organizations in the world. In addition, and just as important, these companies wanted access to the best talent, which often meant they needed to look at geographies with deep talent pools, establish their presence, and ramp up operations by doing an acqui-hire or a team extraction. Canada boasts an exceptional hardware talent pool, owing in part to their top universities and immigration policies that are more favorable than those in the US. Canada’s trade policies also create easier ingress for these companies to enter the North American market when they’re ready to commercialize. During a recent conversation with Hugh Chow, CEO of ventureLAB(Canada’s premier hardware startup accelerator), we discussed why Canada is such an attractive destination for innovative companies that want access to capital and world-class talent. Hugh also explained the role that VenureLAB plays in helping these hardware startups. Big news for a lot of us in tech - I'm surprised this isn't getting more press. From a strategic viewpoint, I have long been of the opinion that relying on NDAs, rather than noncompete clauses, could be a more balanced approach to protect both business and employee interests while fostering a more open market for talent and creating more overall innovation and growth. From my perspective as a manager and employee, I welcome the change. If you want to keep your top talent: pay them competitively, trust them to work remotely, value their wellbeing, and provide them with opportunities to grow and advance. If you're in tech, it’s definitely worth a quick read and keeping an eye on how this develops. I suspect a US Supreme Court case is coming. Electronic Specifier Ltd's Harry Fowle wrote a great piece on gallium nitride (GaN) and how it offers significant advantages over traditional silicon-based semiconductors like increased switching speeds and faster charging. Although GaN design comes with some challenges, its potential is large enough that the GaN power electronics market could exceed $2B by 2025! Traditionally, compound #semiconductor materials like GaN are difficult to manufacture due to crystal defects, but recent experiments with our MST film have shown promising results. In an era marked by rapid technological advances and geopolitical shifts, the U.S. is set to redefine its stance in the global semiconductor industry. According to a recent report by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), the U.S. will experience a groundbreaking 203% increase in semiconductor manufacturing capacity by 2032. This projection comes on the heels of the CHIPS and Science Act, which was enacted to revitalize America’s semiconductor production capabilities that had seen modest growth in the past decade. The report, titled “Emerging Resilience in the Semiconductor Supply Chain,” outlines not only a quantitative boost but a qualitative leap in U.S. manufacturing prowess, especially in advanced logic manufacturing, where the U.S. is set to hold 28% of the global capacity. This is a significant jump from virtually zero over the last decade, positioning the U.S. second only to Taiwan in terms of global semiconductor capital expenditures. Key findings highlight that the U.S. will increase its share from 10% to 14% of the world's total fabrication capacity, marking a historic pivot from the stagnation of previous years. This growth is fueled by over $450 billion in private investments and the creation of more than 56,000 new jobs within the semiconductor sector—bolstered further by CHIPS incentives. However, the landscape is not without its challenges. The SIA report points out potential supply chain risks, emphasizing the need for targeted, market-based investments rather than large-scale, non-market industrial policies that might lead to oversupply or overconcentration in certain semiconductor segments. Despite these hurdles, the path forward is clear. With the U.S. regaining its competitive edge in semiconductor manufacturing and innovation, it is poised not only to meet its own technological and security needs but also to play a pivotal role in shaping the global semiconductor landscape. Q1 #Smartphone Production Increases Due to Low Base Last Year, Expected to Decline 5–10% in Q2, Says TrendForce Corporation TrendForce Corporation reports that suppliers significantly reduced production targets in the first quarter of last year to address severe inventory accumulation in channels. Consequently, even though 1Q24 smartphone production was below pre-pandemic levels of over 300 million units, it still achieved a seemingly impressive 18.7% YoY growth, with a total shipment of 296 million units. Global consumer spending has been constrained by high #inflation and #geopolitical conflicts, leading to a more conservative approach. Additionally, aggressive production by some brands in the first quarter has resulted in elevated channel inventories that need to be adjusted first. Consequently, TrendForce is not optimistic about production numbers for the second quarter, forecasting a decline of 5–10% compared to the previous quarter. In the first quarter, the global top six #manufacturers by production market share were Samsung Electronics, Apple, Xiaomi Technology, OPPO, Transsion, and vivo. #HBM Prices to Increase by 5–10% in 2025, Accounting for Over 30% of Total #DRAM Value, Says TrendForce Corporation 💡 Avril Wu, TrendForce Senior Research Vice President, reports that the HBM market is poised for robust growth, driven by significant pricing premiums and increased capacity needs for AI #chips. HBM's unit sales price is several times higher than that of conventional DRAM and about five times that of #DDR5. This pricing, combined with product iterations in AI #chip #technology that increase single-device HBM capacity, is expected to dramatically raise HBM’s share in both the capacity and market value of the DRAM market from 2023 to 2025. Specifically, HBM’s share of total DRAM bit capacity is estimated to rise from 2% in 2023 to 5% in 2024 and surpass 10% by 2025. In terms of market value, HBM is projected to account for more than 20% of the total DRAM market value starting in 2024, potentially exceeding 30% by 2025. It is very competitive vs other solutions in both raw performance and performance per dollar for cost-effectiveness,” shares Barovian. “We're expanding the OEM ecosystem. Contract Price Increases Offset Seasonal Slump, Boosting #DRAM Q1 Revenue by 5.1%, Says TrendForce Corporation TrendForce reveals that the #DRAM industry experienced a 5.1% revenue increase in 1Q24 compared to the previous quarter. This growth—reaching US$18.35 billion—was driven by rising contract prices for mainstream products, with the price increase being more significant than in 4Q23. As a result, most companies in the industry continued to see revenue growth. The top three suppliers experienced a decline in shipments in the first quarter, demonstrating the industry’s off-season effect. Additionally, downstream companies had higher inventory levels, which led to a significant reduction in #procurement volume. As for ASP, the top three suppliers continued to benefit from contract price increases seen in 4Q23. With inventory levels still healthy, there was a strong intention to raise prices. #Mobile DRAM saw the highest price increase out of all applications thanks to strong sales of Chinese #smartphones. On the other hand, the price increase for consumer DRAM was the lowest among all applications, as manufacturers still need to clear their inventories. Efficient Power Conversion Corp (EPC), headquartered in El Segundo, CA, specializes in gallium nitride on silicon (eGaN) power FETs and integrated circuits for power management applications, with recent validation of their GaN intellectual property rights by the US International Trade Commission (ITC). The ITC upheld EPC's patents and found Innoscience Technology Co Ltd guilty of infringing EPC’s foundational patent, potentially leading to a ban on importing their products into the USA. This ruling is a significant validation of nearly two decades of EPC's hard work and research, reflecting the importance of their intellectual property portfolio.
