What one change helped propel Dell Computers from $20 million to $500 million in revenue in only a couple of years?🚀 Michael Dell had a growth problem and he didn't know how to fix it. Working 100+ hour weeks, Dell Computers had grown from zero to $20 million in revenue quite quickly. But whenever someone in the company had a problem, they contacted him. It wasn't sustainable. Sure, he had grown Dell Computers from his dorm room at the University of Texas with only $1,000 to get started, but to be able to grow any further, he needed help. Dell hired a management consultant to come in to review operations and give him some advice to help him get the company to the next level. Dell knew he needed help corporatising his business to prepare for an IPO within a few years. Almost immediately, the consultant identified the problem. Dell was operating with a classic small business organizational structure. Everyone reported to him. There were no functional divisions or functional managers. The consultant's recommendation was to headhunt functional vice presidents from established, public, computer competitors like Texas Instruments, IBM, Hewlett Packard, and the like (how dated is that list???) These experienced individuals would be incentivised to join a rapidly growing business that would be looking to go public. That one piece of advice from the consultant, as well as the recruitment of those functional managers to operate their own differentiated teams of Sales, Operations, Finance, HR, etc., was the missing ingredient to help Dell Computers achieve scalable growth. Within two years, Dell Computers hit $100 million in revenue and went public. Within another two years, they grew to $500 million in revenue. Sure, the computer industry was booming over that time, but rapid market growth has killed many businesses without the right people, structure, and capital to execute. Play Nice But win.... Just finished reading the amazing book "Play Nice But Win" by our Founder, Chairman, and CEO "Michael Dell". What an amazing Journey overall. The story is very inspiring for all the new Entrepreneurs and the Young Founders who are trying to start a new company. We all have read stories about the Founders of Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, they had different problems to solve. Michael had a different Vision right from Starts. His Love for Computer Hardware and curious mind motivated him to build a Market leader Business out of his interest area. Few highlights from the book... 1) Dell Technologies was founded in 1984 with only 1000$ Investment. 2) Michael Dell was only 19 Years of age when he thought about starting this amazing Market Leader Company from his Dorm Room 3) The Story of how he hid the Computer Inventory in the Bathroom etc when his parents visited him, was fun to read and visualize. 4) In 2013, The company was publicly listed and Michael Dell tried his best to take it Private again. The overall chapters are so interesting to read and a Master class to the Founders. A lot of thought process and conviction was needed to take this mammoth step. But he succeeds in making this company Successful and Market Leader. 5) My Most interesting Topics were the last 3 chapters, where Michael explained very openly His aspirations of Merging with EMC and VMware. Overall book has a lot of hints and tips for New Founders who would like to start a new company. Focus on the target is the key here. When needed, inviting/hiring people who are most suitable for the Job and letting the experts play their part is another key message from the Book. I joined Dell Technologies 4+ years ago, and the overall culture, attention towards detail, focus on Innovation and research and finally, the culture of giving back to society has been motivating me to learn more about our Organization overall. #playnicebutwin #masterclass #delltechnologies #iworkfordell

The original garage entrepreneurs (garagepreneurs?), Hewlett and Packard became friends in 1934 after they had both graduated from Stanford University with degrees in electrical engineering. In 1938, they rented a garage in Palo Alto and started working on their first product: an audio oscillator for testing sound equipment. In 1939, they formalized their partnership and held their infamous coin flip to determine whose name got top billing. Hewlett and Packard both took an employee-centric view of management. And as a result, HP became one of the first U.S. companies to offer flexible work hours, profit-sharing, and several other employee benefits. As Bill Hewlett once noted, “What I’m most proud of is the fact that we really create a way to work with employees, let them share in the profits, and still keep control of it.” As partners, Hewlett and Packard always had each other’s back. At just 17, Michael Dell purchased his first BMW by upgrading and reselling outdated computers, revealing an innate business acumen. His creative mind thrived as he disassembled and rebuilt gadgets, setting the stage for future innovations. Recognizing the untapped potential in the personal computer market, Dell founded PC's Limited at 19. Operating from his dormitory at the University of Texas, he focused on delivering customized, affordable computers directly to consumers, laying the foundation for what would evolve into the multinational technology giant Dell Inc.
