Reflections from our 2024 Ride and Drive event: I have the coolest job! #iworkforGM Being an automotive software engineer is an incredible opportunity to shape the experience people have in one of the biggest and most personal purchases they make. The problems we solve and the incredible outcomes – things like GM’s hands-free Super Cruise – are so rewarding. But the nature of cars means it’s hard to stay up on the competition or even our own full range of new products from Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC. Cars aren’t as easy to gather in one place as phones, TVs, or other tech. That’s why I was so excited to get 400 of my Vehicle Mechatronics Embedded Controls (VMEC) team members together recently to drive and compare 40-plus vehicles, including ones from our competitors. Our team members may only work on motors, or batteries, or suspension, or any other vehicle subsystem at any time, and here they got to see the impact of their subsystem on the whole vehicle performance, while better understanding what customers do, see and feel behind the wheel. There was palpable energy in the shared love for engineering and the awesome products we make. More than anything else, there was a collective appreciation that what our customers experience is so much more than the sum of those parts we design and engineer. It’s moments like these that remind me I have the coolest job in the world!
