In out latest publication, we found that high-need beneficiaries accounted for almost a third of all Medicare enrollees in 2019, varying from 38% in MSSP to 24% in MA. This was a pet-project of mine that came to mind more than 2 years ago, with the goal of helping CFO's & CIO's (really, any Government leader who has a budget that they are held accountable for) to be able to show where the spend is going and what is the government getting in return. Taxpayer money is not infinite, and neither is excuses. This solution is designed to establish a capability using existing data and transform it into results that show spend aligned to strategy and objectives, creating a reaction on first view, but having data to drive action thereafter. The Marketplace Affordability Project Report (MAP-Report) is out! CHLPI Director of Health Care Access Elizabeth Kaplan participated in the Working Group that helped create the report! Here are some key findings: 1. #ACA reforms expanded coverage, especially for marginalized communities. Now we can build on that success by making sure enrollees can afford premiums and needed care. 2. Expensive cost-sharing can make it hard to afford services that prevent and manage chronic conditions. This disproportionately impacts marginalized communities and should be a priority for policymakers looking to build on the success of the ACA. 3. High deductibles can cause financial burdens for marketplace enrollees without large emergency savings, meaning that unanticipated medical expenses limit wealth building in marginalized communities. 4. Enhanced #PremiumTaxCredits have made more generous plans accessible to low-income enrollees, addressing barriers to care. Policymakers should make them permanent. Policymakers can build on the success of the ACA by supporting consumer assistance programs. Doing so is crucial for improving healthcare access and empowering individuals to make informed and cost-effective decisions. Thank you to everyone who worked to get this report out! It is an absolute honor to release my conversation with Keith Rhoades, highlighting the important intersection of #consumerproductsafety and #publichealth How often do you think about the safety or risks associated with the products you purchase? Do you wonder if your baby's high chair is safe? If your smart watch will burn your skin? If your furniture will tipover, or a toy will pose a choking hazard? The amazing professionals in the field of consumer product safety spend their lives thinking about and tackling these issues. I had never heard of this field until my passion for public health landed me in a mentorship program with ICPHSO (Intl Consumer Product Health & Safety Organization). Suddenly, I realized that this field was quietly working to keep all of us safe, playing a critical role in public health, and yet was seldom highlighted or discussed within the public health curriculum and narrative. Keith and I discuss this issue, and how consumers can be educated and empowered to play a more active role in consumer product safety. We also discuss the amazing, passionate people who work in this field, and how he came to find a career that fulfills his passion, curiosity, and desire to make the world a safer place.
