#HBM3e Production Surge Expected to Make Up 35% of Advanced Process #Wafer Input by End of 2024, Says TrendForce Corporation 🤯💡 TrendForce 集邦科技 reports that the three largest #DRAM suppliers are increasing wafer input for advanced processes. Following a rise in #memory contract prices, companies have boosted their capital investments, with capacity expansion focusing on the second half of this year. It is expected that wafer input for 1alpha nm and above processes will account for approximately 40% of total DRAM wafer input by the end of the year. #HBM production will be prioritized due to its profitability and increasing demand. However, limited yields of around 50–60% and a wafer area 60% larger than DRAM products mean a higher proportion of wafer input is required. Based on the TSV capacity of each company, HBM is expected to account for 35% of advanced process wafer input by the end of this year, with the remaining wafer capacity used for #LPDDR5(X) & #DDR5 products. Regarding the latest developments in HBM, TrendForce indicates that HBM3e will become the market mainstream this year, with shipments concentrated in the second half of the year. Currently, SK hynix remains the primary supplier, along with Micron Technology, both utilizing 1beta nm processes and already shipping to NVIDIA. 2024 Wafer Fab Equipment revenue will remain stable before a 2025 surge Wafer Fab Equipment (WFE) revenue is estimated to increase in 2024 by +1.3% year-on-year (YoY) to $108.1B. This is due to a WFE expenditure increase across advanced logic as well as #NAND and #DRAM memory, while legacy node investment is robust. Stronger 2024 growth in service and support revenue is expected, at + 6%YoY to $23.5B, due to increasing fab utilization rates worldwide. In the long term, WFE revenue is expected to have a +4.3% CAGR24-29, reaching $133.7B in 2029, while service and support revenue will be $27.6B in 2029, at a +3.3%CAGR24-29. The moderate growth rate is due to the large WFE revenue increase in 2021-2022, which is related to the large demand for semiconductor devices. As device revenue declined in 2023, the ratio of WFE revenue as a % of semiconductor device revenue reached as high as 19%. In particular, investments in Greater #China (domestic and foreign) ensured the overall WFE did not decline in 2023, and similar investment levels should continue in 2024. However, such high #investments by #chipmakers will not be sustainable in the long term and are expected to decline slowly due to continuous WFE buyouts, with capacity exceeding production needs, governmental incentives, and general increases in chip production costs. Apprenticeships Aim to Meet Texas Chip Sector Talent Demands The graying of the semiconductor workforce as onshore manufacturing ramps up means the days of chip companies poaching each other’s talent are numbered—their local communities must develop talent through the collaboration of schools and workforce development organizations. In the first of two panel discussions hosted by the National Institute of Innovation and Technology (NIIT), those collaborating to help build the talent pipeline for Texas’s semiconductor and advanced manufacturing sectors said they are working to deliver flexible options for apprenticeships to meet the demand for skilled workers with options that allow apprentices to earn a living while learning. https://lnkd.in/eJrKCc2J

Tracking the Progress of the CHIPS R&D Programs Enacted in 2022 to promote U.S.-based semiconductor production and innovation, the CHIPS & Science Act is the most significant federal investment ever made in the U.S. semiconductor industry. While much attention is focused on the CHIPS incentives grant program, the other pillar of the CHIPS Act is also critically important: a substantial, $13 billion investment over 5 years in semiconductor research and development (R&D). The Department of Commerce is responsible for $11 billion, and the Department of Defense is responsible for $2 billion.  To assist the industry and other stakeholders in monitoring the progress of the CHIPS R&D Programs, SIA launched today a new resource tracking the progress of these initiatives. The CHIPS R&D programs include: CHIPS National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC) CHIPS National Advanced Packaging Manufacturing Program (NAPMP) CHIPS Metrology Program (Metrology) CHIPS Manufacturing USA Institute (MFG USA) DOD Microelectronics Commons (ME Commons) Thus far, the Department of Commerce has committed $5 billion to the NSTC, which will be operated by the National Center for the Advancement of Semiconductor Technology (Natcast) and $3 billion to the NAPMP. There is also an open funding opportunity for up to $285 million for MFG USA to establish the CHIPS Digital Twins Manufacturing USA Institute (SIA is supportive of an effort by the Semiconductor Research Corporation to lead this initiative). The CHIPS Metrology Program will be allocated approximately $519 million, and the program is currently supporting at least 30 ongoing research projects. Meanwhile, DOD has selected the 8 hubs that will serve as leaders of the ME Commons, committing $238 million of their total $2 billion. Intel Corporation: Received the largest grant of $8.5 billion, plus an additional $11 billion in government loans. Intel plans to invest $100 billion in new and expanded facilities across Arizona, Ohio, Oregon, and New Mexico. TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company): Awarded $6.6 billion to construct a new chip plant with three fabs in Arizona. TSMC is expected to invest $65 billion in this project. Samsung Semiconductor: Received $6.4 billion in funding from the U.S. government. Micron Technology: Granted $6.1 billion to support its plans of investing $50 billion through 2030 for new fabs in Idaho and New York. GlobalFoundries: Awarded $1.5 billion in funding. Microchip Technology Inc. Technology: Received $162 million. Proposed CHIPS Investment of up to $6.4 Billion Would Complement More than $40 Billion in Private Investment to Support a Comprehensive Semiconductor Cluster for Leading-Edge Logic, Advanced Packaging, and R&D in Taylor, Texas, and Expansion of Austin Fab in Texas Today, the Biden-Harris Administration announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce and Samsung Electronics (Samsung) have signed a non-binding preliminary memorandum of terms (PMT) to provide up to $6.4 billion in direct funding under the CHIPS and Science Act to strengthen the resilience of the U.S. semiconductor supply chain, advance U.S. technology leadership, and fuel U.S. global competitiveness. Samsung – the only leading-edge semiconductor company that is a leader in both advanced memory and advanced logic technologies – is expected to invest more than $40 billion dollars in the region in the coming years, and the proposed investment would support the creation of over 20,000 jobs. The proposed investment would turn Samsung’s existing presence in Texas into a comprehensive ecosystem for the development and production of leading-edge chips in the United States, including two new leading-edge logic fabs, an R&D fab, and an advanced packaging facility in Taylor, as well as an expansion to their existing Austin facility. It also demonstrates Samsung’s ongoing commitment to the United States, where it has been manufacturing chips since 1996. By continuing to develop the technologies of the future in the United States, Samsung is taking steps that would work towards strengthening U.S. economic and national security and increasing the resilience of both the U.S. and global semiconductor supply chains. Happy #CostModelMonday! I did a #fan-out panel-level versus wafer-level comparison at #IMAPS DPC this year, and I'm expanding on it for the IMAPS Symposium. I had a single #yield chart in my analysis previously, looking at yield crossover points in relation to how expensive the incoming chip was. I did a new analysis that looks at when the crossover point occurs for two different panel sizes. In this chart, the same package is built with fan-out packaging on a 300mm wafer and from two different panel sizes. The yield for the 300mm wafer example is held steady at 99%, while the yield is changed for the panel-level processes. For the package built with the 515x510mm panel, the crossover point occurs just past 95%. However, the crossover point is closer to 94% for the package from the 600x600mm panel. In other words, a little more yield loss can be sustained by the package from the larger panel before it no longer competes with a higher yielding package from the wafer.

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) announced global semiconductor industry sales totaled $526.8 billion in 2023, a decrease of 8.2% compared to the 2022 total of $574.1 billion, which was the industry's highest-ever annual total. Note, Sales picked up during the second half of 2023. Sales will continue to improve and margins are going to shrink except those who's majority of revenues coming from niche areas like AI. In 2024 revenues may cross $600 billion. Good news for Semiconductor professionals. But up-skilling is very critical for semiconductor professionals. UPDATE ON US CHIPS ACT TODAY MAY 7th. Hello again. I just arrived for the CLEO Conference. If you are at the Charlotte Convention Center in North Carolina this afternoon, then I recommend coming over to the CLEO Hub Theater to meet my Optica panel members: Craig Arnold, Thomas Brown, Devin Collins, Jurgen Michel, and Rhines Endowed Professor Volker J. Sorger, Ph.D. We will discuss the recent announcements on US government funding awards in optics and photonics, including some related to the US Chips and Science act of 2022. I am curious to discover which awards have made it to a full proposal. Note that the US Commerce Department has suspended plans to issue a funding opportunity for the construction, modernization, or expansion of semiconductor R&D facilities. This is a consequence of the “overwhelming demand” for funding from the US$39 billion facility incentive program. Leading edge chip companies have requested more than US$70 billion. These are the discussion questions today: 1.⁠ ⁠What other funding is expected that isn’t addressed in these projects? Is there more funding coming, or is this it? 2.⁠ ⁠Are the efforts discussed in the panel enough to address the needs of the U.S. photonics industry? If not, what is missing? What might be covered in other proposed projects that are not explicitly photonics, such as quantum?  3.⁠ ⁠Will the proposed projects be open to international partners? To what extent will they be closed? 4.⁠ ⁠What will be the biggest challenge to ramp up these projects?  5.⁠ ⁠What do you need from the community to help the projects reach their full potential? STMicroelectronics Maintains Top Spot with 32.6% Market, onsemi Rises to Second Place in 2023 Revenue Ranking for #SiC Power Devices, Says TrendForce Corporation 💡 TrendForce 集邦科技 reports that the SiC power devices industry maintained strong growth in 2023, driven by the application of #BEVs. The top five suppliers accounted for approximately 91.9% of total revenue; ST lead the pack with a 32.6% market share while onsemi rose from fourth place in 2022 to second place. TrendForce’s analysis indicates that demand from #AI #servers and other fields will significantly increase in 2024. However, the noticeable slowdown in the sales growth of BEVs and weakening #industrial demand are affecting the SiC #supplychain.
