What do you do if you're changing industries or job functions and need to negotiate a salary?
Be bold. Although you are changing industries, I am assuming you have garnered many important skills and experiences that you will carry into your next role. Ensure the hiring manager is aware of these achievements, and use them to your advantage when negotiating a salary. Also, consider if this job is merely a stepping stone to a more advanced position - and if so, then ask for the fair market value of the role. If you have to settle for a bit less, due to inexperience in the new position, then consider it a learning experience.

What do you do if you want to use temporary and contract work as a launchpad for your own business?
In my experience building a consultancy, I contacted business associates, letting them know I was available for consultant work. I kept my services broad; for instance, I wrote, produced, directed, and led advertising campaigns, and offered all of these services to my potential clients. This is a highly competitive business area, so I kept my services fair priced, but I gave my clients incredible service: day and night. I remembered their families, birthdays, etc., and showed them my interest in their careers. All the above and excellent campaigns led to a 10+ year successful business called Tilton Interactive, Inc.
