Disney, which pays around $1.6B a year for TV rights, and Warner, which pays about $1.2B a year, are in discussions to pay substantial increases under a new pact while airing fewer games than they do now, say people familiar with the conversations. The robust pricing expected in the deals shows how valuable live sports are to traditional media companies at a time when cord-cutting is shrinking overall TV viewership. Many households maintain cable subscriptions because it is the only way to watch their favorite teams’ games. Under their current deals, Disney and Warner carry roughly 165 games combined. Games taken from those incumbents would help the NBA create a new package for a streaming player with nationally televised regular-season games and some playoff contests. The league also could draw on a catalog of locally aired games. Amazon’s Prime Video, which airs NFL games, has been aggressive in pursuing the streaming package and is viewed by league and media executives as the front-runner. YouTube is also in the mix, those executives say. Gartner: Competent performance marketers are starting to embrace streaming, including using it to compare incrementality with the rest of their buys. Their dollars are helping contribute to the maturation of the market. At the same time, there’s a big difference between CTV and over-the-top (OTT). Because OTT encompasses devices other than television sets, like phones and desktops, there’s more signal and attribution there that’ll attract direct response advertisers. People still don’t interrupt their TV viewing sessions very often to go and buy things, but when they do, it’s much more likely to happen on a personal device, not a TV screen. AdExchanger: What streaming trends will dominate for the remainder of the year? I still believe the best way to buy all media, when possible, is programmatically to enable decisioning. However, the current setup isn't efficient and frankly kinda sucks when it comes to TV. Between fraud and unnecessary middlemen that don't add value, we need a change. (Yes, Goodway Group is already on its way to a huge CTV buying overhaul that will deliver 30-40% more CTV value for brands shortly!)

✅🖥️ AdExchanger (4/24): “The (CTV/ OTT apps) with the best chances are those that can turn their media into a performance marketing channel with targeting and attribution that looks and feels like digital advertising – at least according to investors on Wall Street, said Laura Martin, senior media and internet analyst at Needham & Company. The way investors see it, upper-funnel advertising alone simply isn’t good enough for streaming to be valuable. Platforms have to be able to attribute actual business outcomes to their ad inventory, or risk losing out to the competition. It’s also harder to earn a profit in streaming because there’s less ad inventory compared to linear TV. But in their quest for outcomes-based measurement, streaming platforms are transforming into mini walled gardens with vaults of viewership and audience data under lock and key, according to Martin. Which certainly goes against the buy-side push for more transparency into streaming data and inventory, she added. Some platforms are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Why We Play the Game Some interesting sports nuggets coming from Horowitz research that portends some significant growth for younger-than-cable/broadcast (basically, under 49) audiences via the new Venu streaming service. 🏈 Per Horowitz, 58% of sports viewers 18-34 and 57% of 35-49 yo indicated a likelihood to subscribe to Venu. (In all, 42% of 2,008 surveyed U.S. adults who identified themselves as "sports viewers" said they'll "likely" or "very likely" subscribe to Venu Sports, Horowitz said.) 🏈 🏈 This is decidedly good news for the service and validates the Venu Triumvirate’s move to future proof their business since 74% of cable subs cite ESPN as a “must have” and 48% of adults said that ESPN was important to their enjoyment of cable, more than any other channel (https://lnkd.in/gUJpccYR). 💥 But to put this into some perspective, Harris Poll research indicates only 35% of Millennials and GenZers watch sports on live broadcast (https://lnkd.in/g2fmbqtt). While this may not be quite an apples to apples (especially since Venu hasn't even launched), Morning Consult's extensive sports research indicates 52% GenZers say watching sports it’s not an important part of being a fan (https://lnkd.in/gujHRgDV). Exciting read from EMARKETER & DoubleVerify; "Ads on retail media networks enjoy a 183% higher engagement rate than the baseline average across all impressions tracked by DoubleVerify, ...[by their] annual study, which analyzed over a trillion impressions from more than 2,000 brands across 100 markets." More interesting is the article goes on to say that viewability is higher off-site than on site. As we know, off-site on its own tends to give lower returns. Concluding that "Striking a happy medium between sales and brand awareness is necessary." The findings are not surprising, the primed environment means shoppers are open to be spoken to by brands. A seperate study by Kantar have self-reported survey partipants rating Amazon Ads highest compared to ads on other platforms. ✅🖥️ WSJ (6/14): “The streaming ad market was upended earlier this year when Amazon converted its entire Prime Video subscriber base to a new ad-supported version, giving customers a chance to switch back to ad-free streaming for an extra $2.99 a month. Prime Video’s large ad-supported subscriber base means it has a significant amount of ad inventory that is affecting the negotiations that Netflix, YouTube, TV networks and other streamers are having with advertisers as they commit to buying billions of dollars in commercial time for the coming TV season—a process known as the “upfronts.” The e-commerce company is driving down ad prices for everyone, analysts and ad buyers said. While Amazon doesn’t disclose subscriber numbers, it has said the ad-supported tier of Prime Video has an average reach of 115 monthly viewers in the U.S. By contrast, Netflix told advertisers at its star-studded presentation last month in New York City that its ad tier reaches 40MM global monthly active users—a significant jump from the 23MM users the company disclosed in January. “Amazon in many ways is building the killer app,” said John Terrana, chief media officer at the ad firm VaynerMedia. It has “premium content, live sports, immense scale,” and advertisers can target ads to their customers and can often see if a viewer bought the product on the platform, he added. Although Amazon has plenty of reach, ad buyers said Netflix programming is attractive because it tends to be more popular and often generates more buzz in the marketplace.
