Last Thursday around 4 pm, a "Robot Supervisor" employed by the Gumi City Council in South Korea reportedly committed suicide due to overwork. The robot was discovered at the bottom of a stairwell, and witnesses had observed it acting strangely before its fall. Officials suspect that the heavy workload may have contributed to the incident. The versatile robot began working at city hall in August 2023. It operated from 9 am to 6 pm, handling tasks such as delivering documents, promoting the city, and providing information to residents. Remarkably, it could move between floors using elevators, a rare capability for robots. The robot's breakdown has evoked mixed reactions. Some believe it was overworked, while others contemplate the broader implications of integrating robots into everyday tasks. One user commented: "A country with unrealistic and disgusting social and work culture. A country with no human values, obsessed with plastic surgery, has achieved a new low. It makes sense. @southkoreapro @bts_bighit" Another posted: "Damn! Don't worry, guys. Robots will never replace humans. This robot couldn't survive even a year. We have much higher tolerance than this robot." A third user remarked: "Just like humans, robots have limitations." The robot was developed by Bear Robotics, a California startup that provided it to Gumi City Hall. South Korea is known for having one of the highest robot densities in the world, with one robot for every ten employees. In the wake of this tragic event, the Gumi City Council has decided not to replace their fallen mechanical colleague. It was broken in pieces and the plates for that bone couldn’t capture all of the fragments. Surgeon looked at me and said, “Alright KB, none of these work. What else do you got?” Pressure was on. OR went quiet and everyone was looking to me. I had about 3 seconds to come up with a solution or go track down the competition’s trays. I’d been in this position before. I was 3 steps ahead. I had multiple back ups and had a crazy thought. I have a lis franc set with different hole patterns, sizes and screw diameters. I provided that solution to the surgeon, indicating it was a midfoot plate and it was his decision. Well he used it and couldn’t have fit better.
