Over the past 10 years, Rana el Kaliouby, Ph.D. and Gabi Zijderveld were on a parallel path that followed artificial intelligence company Affectiva's trajectory: fundraising, adding customers, signing partnerships and, ultimately, exiting the business in a $73.5 million deal. This month, the duo's path began steering into a new direction: venture capital. About three years after Swedish firm Smart Eye merged with Boston-based Affectiva, el Kaliouby and Zijderveld teamed up to launch Blue Tulip Ventures, an early-stage venture capital firm with big plans to invest in AI startups and even bigger ambitions to grow into a household name with lasting impact. #Boston #tech #news #massachusetts #venturecapital #VC #startup #startups #AI #artificialintelligence

Hot off the press: McKinsey Global Institute 's new report on labor shortages and their impact on economic growth -- https://lnkd.in/e3aeHqG9 HT to Anu Madgavkar Olivia White Sven Smit Chris Bradley Ryan Luby and Michael Neary! We analyzed labor supply and demand across 30 countries, with a particular focus on the eight largest, and found VERY little wiggle room in the job market. What was a surplus of 24 million workers in 2010 has dwindled to just shy of 1 million workers for the available jobs. If the global economy is going to continue to grow, companies and policy makers will need to boost productivity, draw more women into the labor market, and entice older workers to work longer.

"Chatbots talking to each other in some form is inevitable, zero doubt in my mind.” I had a very insightful chat with Amit Bendov of Gong about the role AI will play in our lives, for Business Leader. AI is the technological phenomenon which will define our lives for decades to come, so I will be doing more of these interviews with experts who can share their insights - especially about how AI affects the way we do business. Bendov refers to the impact of AI as "the cerebral revolution". “The first revolution in humanity took people from hunter-gatherers to becoming agricultural, then we switched from manufacturing food to goods, which was industrial, now we are manufacturing ideas and solutions, which is our true human power, our brains are what make us stand out.” Like other AI experts I've spoken to, Bendov sees AI as a kind of 'co-pilot', helping humans make better, more informed decisions. The @SpecialCompetitiveStudiesProject (SCSP) team has released a new report, "Vision for Competitiveness," drawing inspiration from NSC-68, a seminal 1950 policy document that outlined the US strategy during the Cold War. This new report by SCSP presents a decisive technology and national security strategy for the United States to maintain its global leadership between 2025 and 2030 through bolstering national strength, strengthening alliances, rebuilding deterrence, and catalyzing economic prosperity. The report emphasizes the critical importance of success within this timeframe and offers concrete policy recommendations across various sectors. Notably, it advocates for national "moonshot" programs in key innovation areas like AI, biotech, quantum computing, advanced networks, semiconductors, and energy, recognizing these technologies as crucial drivers of innovation power and prosperity. Similar to NSC-68, the "Vision for Competitiveness" report paints a picture of a world divided by competing ideologies.It acknowledges the need to re-evaluate US strategy in light of rapid technological advancements and escalating geopolitical competition. The report aims to galvanize the government and crystallize a new worldview and strategy to guide US policy in this challenging era. The conventional wisdom of avoiding #fundraising during the summer months is something that many Israeli founders grapple with. No doubt, summer is a slower time for many of us. But #VC is changing, and so are the norms around fundraising. While it's true that many #investors may be less active during the summer… it doesn't mean that all activity comes to a halt. I’d say that we’re as active as we’ve ever been, and I know that many other seed investors have the same mindset. We’re in the business of backing amazing founders year-round, and that includes the summer. That being said, for Series A or later rounds, it might be a good time to have your ducks in a row, so when you go for a full swing come September, you’re in a great position to close a round of funding. In the end, the “right” time to raise capital can vary greatly depending on the specific circumstances of each startup. Founders should focus on their company's needs, growth plans, and the readiness of their business to take on additional capital. Congratulations to BCG Henderson Institute (BHI) Fellow @Sagar Goel and BHI Ambassador @Orsolya Kovacs on winning the 2023 HBR Prize! The HBR Prize, judged by an independent panel of business and academic leaders with input from members of HBR’s Advisory Board, spotlights the most outstanding article published each year in Harvard Business Review. As a part of their BHI research, Sagar and Orsi co-authored a study on how companies are reskilling their employees in a rapidly evolving era of automation and AI. For their article “Reskilling in the Age of AI,” Sagar and Orsolya, together with Jorge Tamayo, Leila Doumi, and Raffaella Sadun, interviewed leaders at some 40 organizations around the world that are investing in large-scale reskilling programs. Machiavellian leaders at the helm, prioritizing self-interest over all else, raise concerns about the true essence of freedom and democracy. Factors like greed, envy, and fear (the toxic triangle) have historically constrained freedoms, making it easier to manipulate the uninformed than the enlightened. Let's heed the warnings against propaganda, cronyism, sexism, nationalism, and the suppression of human rights. Leaders must govern, not just campaign, and uphold the law above all else. In a world where selfishness masquerades as moral superiority, let's reject divisive narratives based on skin color or religious beliefs. After all, we all live in the shelter of each other. Good leaders will guide with positive influence and educational materials; bad leaders will misguide with misinformation and propaganda. “All propaganda has to be popular and has to accommodate itself to the comprehension of the least intelligent of those whom it seeks to reach.” - Adolf Hitler The lessons of history tell us that if we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle ‘Machiavellianism’ is a real thing and a major component in the toxic triangle of destructive leadership. As we navigate the complexities of globalization, let wisdom guide us, not misinformation or mystical panaceas. Thomas Jefferson once warned… And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter. But we may hope that the dawn of reason and freedom of thought in these United States will do away all this artificial scaffolding...

Universities must be places of light and learning, not places of ignorance sprouting intolerance. The right to freedom of expression at our universities is not some facile postmodernist entitlement, but is an inherited privilege that comes with personal and social responsibility and an acknowledgment of the consequences of public voice. A civil society requires reasoned thinking and respectful debate that derives from thorough informed analysis. That’s what universities should be offering, rather than defending a right to offensive profanity and prejudice.
